i thought chicago was ok, but i've already seen Dancer in the Dark and Moulin Rouge, and it just seemed like a mixture of the two.

plus.... i had absolutely no compassion for zelweggers character whatsoever, and im a fan of her's, so i can't say i liked the glorification of her role particularly....

True---Musicals shouldn't, and since Gere didn't get nominated, usually a sign of how the Academy would think, here it goes for my picks.

I won't go into total detail like my Critic Brother Mystic, cause most of his picks in those categories are mine, xcept the main ones.

Best Song-Hands Across America-U2

Best Animated Film--(Tie) Spirted Away and Lilo and Stitch (Hey its a Hawaii vote for the Lilo, but overall Its Spirted.best animated film of the year)

Best Adapted Screenplay--The Hours--heading into the event I would have guessed Chicago, but after hearing Oscar Nominations, vote has switched to The Hours.

Best Original Screenplay--Gangs of New York

Best Supporting Actress--Kathy Bates and Julianne have been odds on favorite for this Cat. in fact I think I said in my Golden Globes handicap, the same 5 would be nominated again. But my pick, out of all 5 actresses, it would have to go to Meryl Streep for Adaptation, she was just simply amazing in this film, and should get award.

Best Supporting Actor--From the Beginning I would have said it would have came down to Paul Newman and Christopher Walken (This is one of his best roles that he has done), but my pick, out of all the actors would be Chris Cooper for his just amazing performance in Adaptation.

Best Actress--Sorry M.S., Salma as good as she was will not will the oscar, my pick and this is a hard cat. for that it is a three woman race between Kidman/Zellwegger/and Lane, and my pick for the Oscar will be Diane Lane for her role in Unfaithful.

Best Actor--Jack Nicholson--nuff said.

Best Director--Martin Scorscese

Best Picture--From the Beginning, I have been huge fans of the Globe winners Chicago and The Hours. The Hours will probably win, but my upset pick is The Gang of The Hours.

these nominations are bull shit

theres basicaly the same 4 or 5 movies.. in all the nominations

Gangs of New York.. sucked folks..... i mean.. yea.. there was cool fighting and even some good acting... but the movie... just wasnt that amazing..

Adaptation.. should have a nomination in every category and yet it does not... it is one of the most amazing mixes of editing/screenplay/ and acting brilliance.. and deserves waaay more credit

My Big Fat Greek Wedding... is a prime example of EVERYTHING a movie SHOULD be.. and it only got a screenplay nomination... [was the acting in that movie not superb??]

i agree w/ pHo.... Chicago is a 'been there, done that' type of movie.. its certainly nothing new.. its well done.. and very entertaining.. but its based of broadway... i mean.. it can only be but soo good.

The Pianist... is a work of art... and should win most of its nominations... best director id say

MYSTi and i are both MYSTified... as to... how Y Tu Mama Tambien didnt get a foreign film nomination.. and how City Of God.. has no mention whatsoever... [a film that knocks the socks off .. almost all the nominations.

and i hope Spirited Away takes hom the Best Animated Film award... as the others are NOTHING by comparison..

I was also saddened to see nothing from Confessions of a Dangerous Mind nominated. I thought the premise of the movie was incredible.

Me n h8y is so pissed about that. Y Tu Mama... was a masterpiece. *sob*

And City Of God getting no nominations is equally as disgusting! But then again, was that movie released too late for consideration this year?

Great to see an anime getting a nod. Three cheers for Miyazaki and Spirited Away!

Posted by Mystic Slippers on 02-12-2003 12:17 PM:

*^5's MG* hehe

Best Actress--Shame coz i think Salama was superb as Frida. And it's a shame the movie didn't get the recognition it so richly deserved in theatres.

"Best Actor--Jack Nicholson--nuff said." - Hell yeah, Jack was just breathtakingly good in About Schmidt and i totally loved that movie.

"Best Director--Martin Scorscese" = I also think Scorcese in my heart of hearts. Purely coz the media have played up the fact about it. More a 'pressure' gong than anything and i don't agree with it. I thought GoNY was boring and i normally like Scorcese movies. But he doesn't deserve it for this.

I would have to disagree with you on that Y Tu Mama tabien wasn't a very good movie. just out of curiosity did you see it from the english with sub's point of view or spanish? Because I seen it form the spanish point of view and I thought it was very lame it had little or no point to the whole plot. And maybe it was just me but alot of my friends speak perfect spanish and they didn't seem to like it much either but I did see a very good spanish movie maybe the best spanish movie I have ever seen It was named Amores perros now that was a very good movie did you happen to catch that one?

The Pianist should win the oscar but Roman Polanski
troubles might stop it from getting the attention it needs and deserves. I just hope it don't stop Adrien Brody from getting his first oscar for this True master piece I love that movie.

Er....MG....check that title again. Hands Across America is something only us Old Timers remember. The Hands that Built America is the U2 song.

I'll post some picks later. I wanna finish watching Chicago and I wanna see The Pianist before I make the picks. I'm sure you're all waiting....

XChemical...

yea i saw this the first time... w/ no subs.. as i DID make it through about 6 years of Spanish... took the AP exams and all
not that i can speak it but so well... but i can def understand it.

anyhow... the movie loses little in translation.. as ive seen both the subb'd and non-subb'd so that really isnt a factor.

i thought it was artfully done.... and i assume the version u saw didnt have the boy kissing the other boy.. edited out.. cuz if it idd.. that would almost be ur problem right there.. .. cuz the movie w/o that scene.. is kinda silly.

all in all tho... it was a great story... of comin of age... sex...and mischief... of friendship... and how 'fake love' can tear two people apart... hehe.. blah.. i sound like a movie summary writer

and thats sad to hear that Y.Tu.Mama.Tambien failed... to submit themselves as a Foreign nomination. but at least i have a reason now.

Moviegod... are u not a big fan of Adaptation? .. i see u left only room for Meryl STreep (tho i agree she was amazing.) just thought ud see the genius of Charlie Kaufman... and his fake screen credits i mean his genius transcends the movie.... and film itself

hrm... /me gets of Kaufmans dick

I watched the Unrated Subbed release by FLAiR.

I don't need the subs coz i speak Spanish coz like um, i'm half Spanish like.

I loved it, and i'm sure many would agree, but tis a matter of opinion i guess. And yeah Amores Perros is awesome.

Posted by mrfossey on 02-13-2003 08:20 AM:

i would like to see roman polanski for best director, adaptaition for best adapted screenplay, and the man without a past for best foreign language film, even though aki kaurismäki once said that hes feet are never going to touch the ground of hollywood.

for the rest, i go with mystics picks

Posted by rec0de on 02-15-2003 08:20 AM:

the bad thing about the oscars for me is that the trend amongst the academy seems to be to vote for movies that well just wont be remembered as classics it happens too much, like for instance when shawshank redemption was nominated and umm....forest gump won. FOTR gets nominated and beautiful mind wins....i mean c'mon beautiful mind is a good film but not what i'd call a classic, a classic to me is something that will be remembered in years to come. I think the lord of the rings movies have potential to be classics. I mean look at the oscars 20 odd yrs ago wqhen star wars was nominated... it didnt win but became a classic. And look at titanic winning all those oscars i mean apart from the last 30 mins its just a run of the mill love story. nothing special about it. I think scorcesse will take something home, the academy tend to give stuff out to veterans and if jack nicholson gets another one well fuck that its a fix like last yr didnt anyone think how convenient it was that afro-americans won all that shit its all a dumb ass ploy its like the whole show was filmed that way, but dont get me wrong halle berry deserved her oscar i saw the movie n she played her character well, denzel i'm not so sure about. N how come antwone fisher aint in the nominations that movie was really good, and narc another good movie...the oscars just aint what they used to be, there are far many more independant movies out there that are much more deserving than the big name hollywood shite chicago is in my opinion over rated nothing that wasnt done 50 yrs ago by better ppl. a good yr for the box office but not that good for the oscars...GUYS DO UR SELF A FAVOR FIRE UR ACADEMY MEMBERS N GET SOME NEW ONES. pianist better win shit thats damn good movie, the one light of salvation for me is micheal moore getting nominated for bowling for columbine right on man!!! eminem nominated for loose urself, i wish he would do just that (i wonder when the eminem backlash is gonna start) he's over played now was novel at first but he's just a dumb twat with a big mouth n ppl think he's the voice of a generation welp he sure dont speak for most o the ppl i know. he pulled off the acting thing tho, in a wierd kinda ironic way i think i prefer him as an actor. all in all its sad but true 2003 oscars are gonna be a let down the obvious will win and the deserving will walk outa there thinking fuck it i'll stay at home n order pizza next time

Yeah, what the hell, I think he should risk it. Pick up his Oscar, make his speech, and go straight to jail. What most people don't know is that his fling with the 13-yr old French Lolita happened 22-years ago! It's a shame the matter wasn't resolved before he made his masterpiece, "The Pianist" (which I think should sweep the Academy Awards taking home Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor).
