Deftones - Deftones

Deftones a band that hales from Sacramento CA..
consisting of:
Chino Moreno - Vocals/Guitar
Chi Cheng - Bass/Backup vocals
Stephen Carpenter - Strings
Abe Cunningham - Drums
DJ Frank Delgado - DJ

from the not very successful.. but very very amazing debut album titled Adrenaline.. Until their second coming with an album titled Around the Fur.. deftones were a solid group.. with one of the first combinations of melodic singing mixed with chaotic screaming.. and crunching guitar riffs.. and awesome rythym section..
used to be.. deftones were all about the live show.. the albums were good.. but the shows were much much better...
now a days.. a live deftones show.. is very poorly orchestrated.. and it saddens me to see all their talent go to waste..
the third coming from Deftones was an album called White Pony.. now this is where people are going to disagree with me.. because White Pony is pretty much the album that marked the deftones as a very popular act..

the album was a totally diffferent style.. and not a fitting style for this band.. vocals now suffer.. from what seems to be lack of interest in making solid music..
it seems the new album.. has traveled further down this spiral.. and while there are a couple tolerable tracks.. the album falls short of the potential that deftones possess.. perhaps it comes with getting older.. who knows.. all i know is ive witnessed the demise of what used to be one of my favorite bands. now again.. i said some people would disagree with me.. if you are a late blooming deftones fan.. and are a fan of the white pony album.. which are mostly the late blooming fans.. then you probably will like this album.. but for old assholes like me.. if you remember deftones back when music used to mean something... steer clear from this album..

i give this album a 2.5/5

stand out tracks:
When girls telephone boys
Bloody cape

I respect everyones opinion, but I loved this album. I wouldnt call it worse or better than 'white pony', but it's just great anyway.

Battle-axe and deathblow are my favorite tracks, but I really dont dislike any songs, and to me, this album sounds like the deftones, unlike what you said.

it sounds like the deftones that youre accustomed too.. but not the deftones that were a groundbreaking band... listen to adrenaline.. then listen to white pony or this album... the music just doesnt mean anything to them anymore.. its all about the money now.. back when adrenaline came out.. they werent popular.. and neither was that album.. and they had fun.. and they cared.. now if you go to one of their shows.. they put on a half ass performance..

again.. like i said.. you probably will like this album if youre a late blooming deftones fan.. so i respect your opinion.. but any true deftones fan.. knows.. this album is far sub-par to the first 2 albums

I've never been one of those "well this band changed, so now they suck" kind of people. I think the Deftones have an obvious difference in sound between White Pony and Adreniline, both very unique, and I like them both. I'm grabbing this album right now, I'll give it a listenin to here soon.... Good review though Napalm... very informative. I really like how you didn't bash it because you didn't like it, you made sure to say to point out how others might find it well done.

So I run into him a week later in the mall and he’s buying another cat and I says to ‘em "Jesus Walt, what are you doing? You know your just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too, why don’t you knock it off?" And he says to me "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy....

I dare you to find any band that sound exactly the same way they did in 1994. every band grows in time to a new style, and if you're a true fan, you learn to accept and embrace it. The deftones never sold out, or never got money hungry, but the fact was, they had barely any money to record white pony, and actually held the record back cause they didnt have money to record it. so yeah, they needed some money off white pony.

adrenaline is a perfect record, around the fur took adrenaline and made it better. then they grew up, had kids, had new things in life happen to them, and recorded white pony, a new sounding album. is that so wrong? now they took the sound from white pony, and IMO, made it better with 'deftones'. I'd say 'deftones' is a mix of adrenaline and white pony, but not a sequal to white pony.

bands that sold out are bands like korn. korn made untouchables soley for money. there was NO heart involved at all in 'untouchables'... and this was after IMO one of the best albums ever, 'issues'.

the deftones didnt make an 'untouchables' sell out record... and if you notice, the lyrics and sounds of 'deftones' are just as complexed as any deftones record or song.

But, i respect your opinion. you can think whatever you want... all I know is, I can't keep this new album out of my stereo.

Btw, about the concert comment, they are great in concert, and even toured clubs that only hold 500 people so they can give back to their fans in an intimite concert.

I met chino, and he's very down to earth and nice to his fans, but he can also be an asshole when he wants to. what do you expect? he's human. and frankly, i think we'd get bored if every deftones album sounded exactly like adrenaline. people always whine saying 'oh it's not as good as adrenaline', yet if you give them a sequal to adrenaline, theyll whine saying 'it's nothing new'...

who wants a new album that sounds exactly like the old album? EVERYONE agrees meteora by linkin park should had been called 'hybrid theory 2', cause it's the EXACT same sound (don't get me wrong... I do like metora...it's a pretty good album)

Green Day.

Decent review Fuzz, just checked this album out today. Can't say I was very impressed. I compared it an older track I have w/
Deftones + Tool called Passenger. You can defintely hear the difference. Whether thats good or bad is a matter of opinion

ohhh lol, i never post on this board, but this caught my attention

ok...

you listen to dookie or insomniac - find any song on that album that sounds anything like like whats on Shenanigans.

all 3 albums sound very different. but dookie and insomniac share something. and that'd be 'the time' in which they were created in, what the whole punk culture was like then ectect.

i may not be 'punk' i may not be living the culture, but Greenday has stayed one of my favorite bands since the early 90's when i was a preteen even.

i dont see how greenday has stayed the same in the way their music sounds, lyrically and the music they make are very much different since the days of 39/smooth to insomniac

ok.. first of all.. ive seen deftones in concert back in the day.. and ive seen deftones in concert as of late..and there is definately a lack of motivation.. i dunno if you play music.. or if you just go to concerts and say look at the pretty people on stage... but i happen to play guitar..bass..drums.. and do vocals.. and i know what it takes to do a tight show.... im not using tight as slang mind you.. im saying.. theyre performances now.. are not tight.. meaning.. theyre music on stage isnt orchastrated well..

i just wish there were more fans of good music out there.. than the lifestyle..

Deftones album has got NOTHING.. and i repeat.. NOTHING on adrenaline.. theres not even a trace in this album that its the same band

and for your little ive met chino comment.. well.. in louisville kentucky at a small place called the brewery.. approximately.. i dunno.. lots and lots of years ago.. i went to see the deftones.. this was the second time seeing them.. first time was PRE adrenaline tour.. second time was pre around the fur tour.. i drove through the alley.. and there was the entire band.. sitting on some steps behind the club.. smoking weed just like anybody else.. so me and my friends were able to not only hang out with.. but smoke weed with.. the deftones.. and then later. they put on a MOTHERFUCKER of a performance..... fast forward a few years.. on the white pony tour.. they hit up ozzfest... i go to ozzfest knowing that deftones put on a good show.. and im suprised by the fact that it seems like they cant even play their instruments... what were they too drunk to play?

in summation.... i think your opinion is null.. i think you dont know much about music.. and the production of it... and i also think... either youre not a good fan of music.... or you just accept any piece of shit thats thrown at you

What am I not accepting? that I'll always like the deftones, whether they're making an album like adrenaline or not?

'deftones' has songs that sorta sound the same from around the fur... notice deathblow is sorta like mascara. or girls telephone boys like headup.

anyway, call me whatever you want, thats fine... I dont care...

btw, read the newest issue of revolvere magazine? the band diss themselves, and say they're changing and trying a lot harder to be better live. I suggest you read the article.

yeah, I thought the same.

come to think of it though, bad religion probably stayed the same for the longest...but then changed in 2000ish.

Frankly, I sorta got bored with BR after a while...

would we really want every deftones album to sound like adrenaline? we'd get bored.

ive listened to alot of Bouncing souls - their music has kind of stayed the same too... not as dramatic as deftones or greenday..

But - anyways on the topic of deftones, someone above made the comment about listening to the tracks from adreniline and then there new ST album.
i did, and i must admit your right. the sound is alot different. lyrically i think the content hasnt changed dramatically, more or less updated, to reflect current events in their life.
i cant really say any of this with complete accuracy... i only opinionate based on what i hear.

i dont 'hate' the new deftones album, nor white pony, but i find their first 2 albums better in the sense of diversity in the way the music is played. and the vocals aswell cant forget that.

anyways i'll stop talking out my ass so i can allow you to flame w/e ive said

peace

I finally gave this a listening to after the concert, and It's pretty good. I really liked the performance of Minerva so It's kinda precious to me... lol. Overall It's much like the White Pony sound with a few differences, but for the most part it is "New Deftones" as opposed to thier old shit. Both good in thier own way though.

8/10

I think slayer has stayed the same. And for Napalm, he always cry when someone disagree with him. And for playing in a band ( wow, napalm, you must know all your powercords. and your 4/4 drum beats.)

well yeah you still like Linkin Park. me too.

In addition, look at CKY and their albums, basically unchanged but still new in their own fashion. and look at The Vandals. Tell me the differences between Hitler Bad, Vandals Good and Internet Dating Superstuds, same thing, just new... And then System of a Down comes to mind.

Did anyone really like SevenDust? I know they had kind of a short run... but, they still sound like seven dust 5 years later....

Deftones changed so badly that i really cant take them too seriously any longer. But im also not one who frowns on commercial music either, so thats not why i dont like them much anymore.. They just dont have the same impact they did on me when Adrenaline debuted. Around the Fur, while it did possess a couple of great tracks, began the Deftones transistion into wussy rock and White Pony sort of marked their end. I haven't picked up the newest one because im afraid to. lol.
