Listen Up New Users!

Hiya, new users. This is your good buddy, Uncle Kal. I'm here to deliver a few tips for you as you start out here on VCDQ. Also, I'm slightly drunk right now....so if I ramble, or make a typing error you should be polite and not point it out.

The first thing you should know before you create a thread here is that VCDQ has a SEARCH function. So, before you post a question, do yourself a favor and see if that question has been posted before. Chances are, it has.

Also, when posting a thread, try to spice it up a bit in the title. We see about a billion threads titled, "Newbie Needs help!" or "Help me Please!" or "How do I do this?". These titles are bland, and honestly, a little annoying. It sounds like you're whinning already and we haven't even seen your post.

Which brings me to my next point. Don't whine. If you're having a hard time with something, use GOOGLE first. That will resolve your problem 80% of the time.

Don't request either. When we say don't request, we really mean "You'll be banned if you request". That means don't request files, locations of files, passwords for files, information about how to find files....you get the picture.

Our Lord and Master, Mr. pHo has provided you all with a nice sticky on rules. READ THAT STICKY. He has also provided you with a nice faq for questions like, "What's INTERNAL mean? or What's NUKED mean? or How Do I Turn on my Computer without Pissing my pants?". READ THE FAQ. It'll answer many of your questions.

I may think of more tips, but this should get you started. If any of the more experienced users see this....feel free to add your own tips. We love you new people, and that's why we don't want to have to hurt you.

-K

The type of questions that some of you ask can get quite annoying. /me hopes this helps

Posted by Carson on 07-27-2003 05:23 AM:

If your question is technical, please add in all the details you can think of that are relevant to the question. If your question is file-related, don't mention where you obtained it. We are not in that business.

Also, there are a good many people who wander the newbie forums and post at different parts of the day. Don't get discouraged if your question isn't answered in 20 minutes, but please check back in the next few hours anyway because to get the answer you want you may have to provide more information.

A good many questions can be answered by two websites in particular.

http://www.dvdrhelp.com <- this site is all about vcd/svcd/dvdr and they have dvd player forums over practically every dvd player model on the market. They also have a wonderful glossary and FAQ section.

http://www.doom9.org <- This site is pretty much a walk-through on ripping/burning/authoring/mixing/whatever'ing to do with DVD/SVCD/VCD for most popular software.

Now.. random tidbits of information:

1) If you got it from kazaa, you're at the wrong place. There is no help available :/

2) Try visiting the IRC channel if your question is hard to ask or the answer is hard to understand. Don't be shy; most of us have more bark than bite. Pick a nickname you want.. VCDQWeb *doesn't* cut it.

3) Everybody was new at some point. Everybody has been as frustrated about something as you are. Just remain polite and you'll come across someone who can tell you what you want to know.

4) Don't make 'fan threads' to any release group or person. They are a waste of time and bandwidth and nobody wants to read them.

5) If someone is successful in helping you, reply to your thread and say if you got it working.. give some sort of feedback or update. It's all about helping your neighbor, but if you don't show that you're gracious, people may not help next time you're in trouble.

Thanks for reading,

Carson

Okay new users, I've left this thread alone for awhile now, and it does look like maybe a few people actually took a look at it. That's good. The first few suggestions were about questions to ask, not to ask, and to search for in the NEWBIES forum. Here's somethings to keep in mind for other areas:

1. Each forum has a purpose. When posting in a forum, make sure that it shouldn't be somewhere else. Take a look around the place before you post your Movie review in General Discussion, or your Suggestion in Comments.

2. Speaking of the Comments section.... Don't post a comment until you have seen the release or a sample (not just a sample jpeg, either!) and you have formed some sort of helpful opinion about what you've seen. Too many times new users jump into the comments section with a verbal "high-five" for the group or to randomly bitch or brag about something that is not related.

3. Don't randomly bitch about people when they critique a release. EVERYONE REALIZES they are free, but the purpose of this site is to RATE. If everyone just sat on their ass and said, "Oh well it's free" the purpose of this site would be severely diminished.

4. Don't randomly bitch about the staff. No matter how cool you think you are or how stupid and unconnected we (staff) are.... complaining about the staff without a good reason is not a good idea. Make friends, new users, not enemies.

5. No Requests! I know I said this one before, but it can't be said enough. If you request movies, samples, sites, sources....anything like that you'll be banned.

6. If you're in a group, or think you're in a group, don't announce it to the world in any part of the forum. You'll be banned for this, but it's really for your own good. It doesn't happen alot, but sadly it does happen. Also, don't point out other people you THINK are in a group. (Like saying, "Jimmy, the guy that posted above, is really in PLOPVcD!") That'll get you banned too.

Okay, there's a few more hints and tips. If I can save just one new user from the "Ban User" button, I've done my job here today.

/me shakes his head and looks to the sky for a moment of reflection.

Rate the quality against other releases in that particular section.
IE
Rate a cam against other cams
Rate a telesync against other telesyncs
Only then will the ratings mean anything...you need a benchmark for any scoring sytem to work...

u do know kalvaitis007 was the last one to post in this and it was a long time ago right???

anyway, i know what you mean, thats the way i vote on a release. but i think most people do that, except the retarded members, they just do what ever they can think of !!!

Everyone take a look at my most recent warning. This section's gotten a bit sloppy with all the talk about where you can find releases.

Don't discuss where you get your releases from even if the topic isn't specifically about finding releases. For all we know, you get them from your neighbor in exchange for sexual favors. (Well, if you're anything like Neversoft, anyway.)

Neversoft is your neighbor? but i thought you guys lived in different countries!

Related to the first post in this thread, I checked the FAQ and couldn't get the answer to:

"How Do I Turn on my Computer without Pissing my pants?"

I've used the search button but have totally failed to come up with anything. Please help me, it's now become quite a problem.

Posted by kap0n3 on 02-26-2005 09:54 PM:

i think the no requesting thing has been made into a pretty big deal, i would however like to contribute to making it into an even bigger deal by saying that no one appreciates requesting by private message

OK - I'm REAL new to anything to do with DVD encoding, decoding etc and I'm brand new on this forum and I REALLY want to follow the rules.

So I would REALLY REALLY like to read pHo's FAQs in his sticky on the rules etc as suggested cos I have no idea what INTERNAL or NUKED means- so could you please, pretty please fix the link to the FAQs in nice Mr pHo's sticky. That would really be appreciated.
