New Dr Who

Nobody has started a thread about the new Doctor Who series being aired in the UK so I thought I'd start one...

... anybody else bothered to watch this yet? Watched the first two episodes and although the special effects are sometimes a bit ropey, the plots are stupid and the dialogue is hackneyed but hey... IT'S DOCTOR WHO!!

Seriously, had they spent a fortune on special effects and just churned-out another Sci-fi program then i would've probably changed channel but I'm pleased to say they avoided that and managed to retain that classic "Who" feeling from the 70s.

So I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here - everything that I've ever criticised about Doctor Who is in there but it just feels "right" for some reason. I was also slightly encouraged by the 2nd episode improving on the first by spending more than £4.99 on special effects, although the plot was still totally stupid.

Well, that's it, I've officially just bored myself into submission. Now, fuck off and watch Dr Who (or download it from UKNova if you're not in Blighty) you dirty, stinking, shitcunts!

Have you noticed that the website featured in episode 1 is here:
http://www.whoisdoctorwho.co.uk/
(publicity stunt by the BBC)

I'm actually still undecided about the new series. I was into Dr Who most during the Peter Davison years, although I have memories of Tom Baker and read many of the Jon Pertwee-era books when I was younger.

I think Eccleston makes a good Doctor and the teaser plot line hinted in Ep 2 could get interesting.

The only thing I would say is that I don't like the 45-minute long stories. Four episodes per story with cliffhangers at the end of each episode would be better IMO.

i'm still not sure whether i like it or not. i like ecclestone and i think he's good in the role. but i have a big problem with charlie...errr...bobbie...bambi...whatever piper - i hate all things chris evans and even his discards annoy me. wtf is she in that role? what is it she brings that any council estate chav princess couldn't? (and i've seen a lotta council estate chav that's a far sight sexier and more watchable.) celebrity casting for celebrity's sake is just annoying. it'd be nice to see some worthy up and coming actress having the role.

beyond that, the restaurant at the end of the universe scenario was a bit derivitive, but if it was meant as a homage to douglas adams then i applaud it.

effects are good (earth explosion, spider thingies, face morphing), cast (bar davey piper) have been good, storylines haven't been inspired, but they've been ok...nothing really bad, but nothing that's gripped me either. kinda indifferent so far...if i'm still watching by episode 6 then i'll be a convert.

Billie Piper is ok, I can't really think of any other young sluts I'd rather see in the role of Rose. Sure, there's some that would be as good cos Billie is nothing special but it could've been worse... It could've been one of the numerous mingers off Eastenders

Nice to hear that Dr Who gave the royal wedding, the Grand National and Ant & Dec all a kicking in the weekend ratings!

Ep 3 was the best yet.

Gotta agree with that... The episodes do seem to be getting better, albeit sillier I was even slightly impressed with the SFX - ok, they were still crap but easily the best I've ever seen produced by the Beeb.

i never thought of that! yeah, you're right, coulda been westbrook snorting a line off the tardis control panel </shudders at thought>

that was an excellent episode! that's what i remember dr who being about, a mix of some large xmas ham with a liberal sprinkling of sci-fi. simon callow was great, a bit too good of an actor and too convincing to be able to ham it up too much, but he was close. and a not too shabby storyline either...but they coulda taken it a lot further: dr who of old would have strung it out for 3 or 4 episodes, there was the potential for that. i prefer deep and involved to bitesize, but bitesize means anyone can join the series at any time...i guess that's important now to win over a new audience. i'd hope tho that later in the series they'd develop more complex and intricate plots.

a couple more episodes like that and i may even start to collect the series

It's ok...I'll probably end up watching the whole series. Piper's voice is annoying at times and there is something about the whole thing that makes it grate at times, not sure what though...lol

Overall reasonably entertaining

i watched 2 episodes and thought it was awful , never watched any of the earlier dr whos

Hmmmm... Well, it's old news that Christopher Eccleston is leaving the series after season one so The Doctor will be "regenerating" again

Apparently (well, according to the Beeb) the new Doctor is gonna be some scary-looking bastard called David Tennant.

PJEER!!

It's official... Four episodes into it and I love it. None of that "serious" Sci-fi like Stargate etc (which I thoroughly enjoy, I'm not comparing the two). It's "good old" Doctor Who silliness and I applaud the BBCs efforts to resurrect it and not fuck about with the format too much. Last night's episode reminded me of why I used to love the show so much, they know the plots are stupid so they "enjoy" it instead.

Those of you who think it looks a bit silly and don't like it due to the strange plots and dubious special effects - it's supposed to be like that, it always was! Relax and think of it as "Diet Sci-fi"

Have to agree with you Neversoft, It's really a great show. It's really is a shame that their getting a new Dr who next season. The current guy is brillliant at playing the roll. As for the effects they may not be special, ahh but their still great. The effect kinda remind me of Red Dwarfs effect(loved that show too). Hope it keep up the funny story line their fantastic. looking forward to next weeks episode. Anyone who hasn't checked this out really should.

This is interesting - a warning not to download pirate material from the internet, issued by the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce.

A subtle reference to the leaked "Rose" episode...

It's spelt "Dalek" (an anagram of "Kaled"), not "Darlek".

The worst part is, I knew that! It was probably cos I was errrr... Typing in doublespaced caps - I got confused.

(I don't expect you to believe that, but it's true!)

A gay Dalek? Fuck that episode, fuck it right in it's gay Dalek arse!

Last night's episode was the weakest so far, they could've done so much more with the Daleks

Still loved it, I've enjoyed every episode except the first one up to now. Something just didn't hang right with it. I'm loving Billie as Rose, never thought she'd be any good but was happily surprised.

Yeah, last nights wasn't brilliant but the Dalek was still evil enough (electrocuting everyone) and the Doctor went pretty out of his mind.

Was skimming the bbc site last nite and came across:

If you're a fan of Douglas Adams AND Doctor Who then enjoy! Otherwise skip back a couple of links and try some of the other animated episodes

Hmmmm... I liked tonights, very weird n creepy. I'm not so sure about Lord Flashheart or whatever his twatting name was (the pilot from the future) and i think he's joining Dr Who's "team" as well

Otherwise - oooh, now I remember why the old Doctor Who scared me as a kid, I almost shat my trollies!

I give tonights episode, 4 brown stars our of 5!
