Torchwood, yeah, thanks Mother. Remember seeing a trailer for it not that long ago. Bit worried that it'll be full of man-love storylines Hopefully there'll be enough plot, fx and thrills to get past that.
40 mins into the first episode and a full on throat gagging man-on-man tongue swap

this feels distinctly tawdry for some reason. It may be the fact ive still got BSG S3 Ep4 still burnt into my skull but it was really...erm...non adultish? Still feels like kidsplay even with all the sex etc which is just being used to add to the supposed hardcore nature of the program

Ill still watch it but this doesnt feel quite right as a grown ups Sci Fi. I suppose BSG has stolen all the thunder for that.

It's juvenille camp bullshit. They've tried to use sex (and sexuality) to cover the lack of any real storylines. Captain Jack is gay, the lead female has already had a lesbo snog, so has the dweeb sex maniac (gay kiss rather than lesbo of course), which only leaves the asexual chinese chick and the currently dead (soon to be reincarnated) indian one as potentially straight.

The first episode didn't have any story at all. Even though, in most series of this type, the first episode is the location and character setting episode, usually involving the 'revelation' of weird and wonderful happenings to a cynic/naive/oblivious newbie who gradually becomes inducted/initiated, there is usually the start of a thread or at least a story to become involved with. The death of Suzie was no doubt meant to be of some importance, but who the fuck cared? We'd only just met the character and no fucker in Torchwood even seemed to notice that she was gone

Second episode: cute paedo-pleasing looking chick fucking her way to orgasmatronic destruction. Cool if you're 14yo, passe to anyone who's popped their cherry.

Two episodes watched, highly unlikely I'll make any effort to watch any more episodes, but I'll tune in if I'm home and I remember it's on.

I must have this wrong ?!?!?! I thought that this Torchwood was a spin-off from the new series of Dr Who ????
or am I in a drunken stupor?? I must admit that I have only seen 2 trailers for it so far, but these write-ups seem to say that it is not even worth a quick look.

it is a spinoff from doctor who, torchwood and capt jack harkness have featured in doctor who for a few episodes (thought not previously linked together.) Also torchwood is an anagram of doctor who.

Didnt really seem to save it from seeming puerile and stupid. Lots of sex and profanity do not make a show "gritty" (unless its scarface, in which case rock on! )

Posted by Bird of Prey on 10-23-2006 10:18 AM:

watched both episodes total waste of my time. mediocre at best.

Posted by Vampire on 10-23-2006 10:24 AM:

I agree with all the comments so far - it was bad. Dialogue was poor, the plot in the second episode was laughable, swearing was OTT, gay scenes/references were rife and I dislike most of the characters already. I must confess to laughing at the line "He came and went!" though - in my defense, I was extremely tired.

tbh i had a gut feeling it would be cack from the supposed teasers

the whole "we're outside the police, above the government, beyond the UN" sounded like 15 year olds bullshit.

Ill give it another go next week, and hopefully it can pull itself out of the shit. If not, itll just be a big pile of cack.

Yeah, it is. Anyone who watched Dr Who will remember that Torchwood was commissioned by Queen Victoria to protect the Earth from alien hostiles (and iirc to specifally watch out for the Dr's meddling in human affairs) at the conclusion of the stately home werewolf episodes when, even though he saved mankind, Vic wasn't too chuffed with the Dr's presence in her empire.

And for those wondering what the whole gay thing is about : Russel T Davies is the lead writer and producer behind the new Dr Who and creator of Torchwood. He's rampantly gay and since his massive success with "Queer As Folk" brings his gay agenda to virtually everything he's involved with...thus my (now justified) fear that Torchwood would be more about being gay than to do with sci-fi.

Posted by Sin on 10-23-2006 08:25 PM:

the whole torchwood came about as someone had the idea of labelling the tapes sent from wales to london as torchwood to stop em being stolen. Russell T Davies liked the idea so much that he decided to make a new show of it.

Posted by jmonfm on 10-24-2006 12:55 AM:

The big problem is that kids ( like my 8 year old ) who have discovered Dr Who want to get involved with this spin-off.
This is obviously not possible as the material is unsuitable for the wide age range of the Dr Who audience.
Such a shame that they have done this - still I should be grateful that they are doing such a good job on the new Dr Who and introducing a whole generation to a great show.
I grew up with Patrick Troughton - Jon Pertwee - Tom Baker.

I enjoyed it but the swearing and sex felt "tacked-on" it would work as a Dr Who spin-off if they ditched the adult crap and put it on before the 9pm watershed.

I'll be watching it, but I much prefer Dr Who.

Well I've given this show a chance up until the last show I wasn't impressed but I'm really startin to like it

Posted by Neversoft on 11-21-2006 01:18 AM:

Well, I like it but it still feels like a dumping ground for Doctor Who scripts that didn't make it... and i wish they'd stop shoving gays down my throat

Thumbs up

Personally I love the show and I'm deeply sorry that the American audience at large will probably never see it any time soon due to the rampant homophobia in this country. This in spite of the fact that Queer As Folk was the highest rated cable TV show EVER!
I went to burningman and it was GREAT to see straights gays nudist and non nudist getting along just fine why can't the rest of the world be like that? The previous poster said he was tired of homosexuallity being shoved down his throat try looking at that statement from the other side of the fence. Just think about how often straights do things in public that would get a gay couple beatup or worse. As for the kids angle the truth never hurt anyone but the lack of it certainly has. Again there where plenty of kids at Burningmad and they were more socially adjusted than most kids you see these days. We are in the 21st Century so we should realise by now that there are people out there that are different from us and deal with it. Why would the ET's let us in the club if we can't get along with our own speicies? And as for Brits not doing SciFi very well I must VEHEMENTLY disagree! Sure most of it is done on a smaller budget but the quality of the material more than makes up for that. Plus they go into areas that most american studios are either afraid to venture or are actully forbidden by the FCC to venture into. So I say HERE HERE to the Brits and a great big TALLY HO to boot!
