Pogram to check processor for errors ?

Ok so i think there something wrong with my processor ( Intel core 2 duo @ 3.00GHz) Its running really high then if it reaches 100% the computer just dies (shuts down completely)

Im listening to some tracks on WMP and typing this message and its running at 57% , Encoding is starting to take longer than it did when i got the pc.

So basically what i want to know is there some cool little program to check my processor for errors ?

Before all that have you check to make sure your temps aren't too high? Sounds like a heat issue. If you're capable, take off the heatsink/fan and remove the old thermal paste replacing with new paste. Make sure the heatsink/fan is replaced correctly and fully seated and give it another try.

One program I can recommend for extreme stress testing of the cpu and/or memory is Prime 95: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103

No im not capable, how idiot proof is it ? Am i likely to fuck something up since i dont know what im doing.

Also know of any guides ?
Im thinking you're right in it being a heat issue since my pc is almost always on.

Do a google search for removing, cleaning and reinstalling a cpu heatsink/fan but first check to even see if your fan is plugged (doh!) or even turning correctly if at all. Not really a hard thing to do, you just have to be careful not to damage the proc itself and to take care in not using too much thermal paste (or grease as its otherwise known). You might consider possibly purchasing an aftermarket heatsink/cpu designed for your particular cpu if you are currently using the stock one or if it is damaged and not working correctly.

It could just be dust build-up on the cooling fins? My fins were packed solid with dust after just six months of operation. The CPU temperature dropped by a huge amount after I cleared it.

If you don't know anybody who's a bit of a "Techie" take the bastard to Geek Squad and tell them YOU KNOW IT'S A HEAT ISSUE (maybe even show them a copy of the Sandra output) and can they replace the CPU Heatsink/fan... It'll cost ya but it's better than you breaking the cunt.

What chip have you got @ 3GHz? If you're overclocking i've had in test boxes an E2160,E2180,E2220 and E6700 all at 3.2GHz running ORTHOS for a good 24hrs with max temps of 59c.

A decent cheap but well performing aftermarket cooler is this one. Just make sure as previously mentioned you clean any old thermal compound off the cpu before attaching the new one. With the cooler just mentioned you don't need any addition thermal compound as its got AS5 on the heatsink already. Also check the airflow in the case and the voltages as that hikes the temps up too.

I took the fan off today and cleaned it but did'nt put more thermal paste on... So i think ive made it worse

Gonna order some Artic silver and add some of that when it arrives , anyone used it ?

Yep good stuff but use it sparingly you don't need much. Make sure the heatsink/fan is cleaned of old grease as well as the proc before applying. As mentioned before isopropyl alcohol does a good job. And make sure the heatsink/fan is seated fully and correctly when you reinstall it.

Something is very wrong if its not running stock. Have you tried under clocking it and seeing what happens?
