original xbox consoles £9.99

Bloody hell man.
Was in Game yesterday and bought 2 original xbox consoles for £9.99 each with all leads and a controller.
Going to set one up for a friend with xbmc.
keep the other one for myself for backup incase my old one packs in.
Or might just set up a wee link with them.
Gamestation selling them for £14.99

If nobody has set them up with xbmc which i doubt you should really get your finger out and sort it out.
Been using mine for years.
The original xbox has a lot of great games in the back catalogue too.

do whats right

Do you still need an action replay/a legit copy of a certain game (Splinter Cell I think) to mod an xbox? It's been years since I did it. Mine is still going strong but a backup might be handy, spesh if they are only 10 beans.

No, just fast reactions for pulling the cable out of the dvd drive.

yeah still need splinter cell but they are only 99p now second hand

I don't think you need action replay if you ftp in the game save not sure though cause i do use the action replay card myself

still even if you do it shouldn't cost you too much

I bought one cheap and am currently scouring eBay for the classic games.

One thing that has come up though.....I accidentally bought an NTSC Half Life 2...will it work on a softmodded PAL xbox?

Posted by olskoolfife on 09-07-2008 11:10 PM:

yeah it works

Here's a good guide to modding it never done it myself. No mention of any game needed

I've heard with Xbmc you can play .mkv files directly off the xbox? For Media I hear it's great.

Is that true?

Posted by olskoolfife on 09-08-2008 07:38 PM:

it struggles to play mkv files

but i have run 720p xvids through it.

there is a lot of nice scripts for it now and the skins are excellent for it too.

there are some games that play in hd like soul calibur 2 for example.
you can get a component lead for it for your hdtv but remember don't get the 360 one as that won't work.

you can set it up to automatically switch between pal and ntsc for games.

i feel a bit guilty for neglecting mine....

softmodded with a 250gb hdd and hooked up to a wireless adapter. Might have to fire it back up for a bash on MAME or scummvx

if they are flogging them for a tenner it really is worth getting one...easily modded, big catalogue of games and an excellent media player

It's a great piece of kit for the price. I really fell out of the games scene for a long while and am trying to get back into it on the cheap with an old xbox.

Just spent the day playing Doom 3 and its great. Also bought KOTOR off eBay.

How do I hook it up to my wireless broadband? A wireless adaptor? Can you recommend one? I am still a bit of a noob when it comes to xbmc and such things.

Posted by olskoolfife on 09-10-2008 08:44 AM:

Ive got mine hooked up to a wireless adapter but ithe xbox itself is wired in and i stream stuff of my laptop which is wireless.

if you have an xbox in another room you could always just get a wee yersel another cheap wireless router for around £20 or something.

you can get a wireless adapter that connects to the old xbox but they are pretty hard to come by and will work out a bit more expensive.

I managed to get one through the website a few days ago (free postage too), it says out of stock now but it's worth checking now and again, assuming anyone else is after one.
Black Crystal

About softmodding it, I tried the ndure/hot swap method but my keyboard doesn't respond when the xbox hd maker/ndure software loads up. Should I be using a ps2 keyboard (I'm using a usb one) or have I fucked up the hot swapping and thats why it won't let me choose any options?

Posted by olskoolfife on 11-02-2008 09:55 PM:

I haven't tried to softmod an xbox this way .
I have only ever used the splinter cell and Agent Under Fire method with memory card / action replay.
hadn't even heard of this way until you mentioned it to be honest.

you should get plenty of help over at xbox-scene though.

Posted by valvehead on 11-02-2008 10:25 PM:

I'm gonna borrow a ps2 keyboard off a mate first to see if that's the cause of the ndure software not responding. If that doesn't work then I'll check out xbox-scene, cheers.

How much is an action replay? I guess splinter cell would only be a few quid now at tops, only paid a £10 for the console so I don't want to spend too much modding it
I just want it for upscaling xvids via a component lead as I heard it's pretty good at doing that.
Plus, I want to play Tony Hawks 2x which wasn't released in the uk, dying to have a go at the New York level in better quality than the ps1 version

Posted by olskoolfife on 11-03-2008 12:02 AM:

splinter cell is only 99p.
well thats what it cost me out of Game

i think the action replay was about £15 when i got it but that was a few years ago now.
If you know someone near you with a modded xbox they could get the save file for you and stick it on a memory card which you should be able to get for a fiver tops.

cash generator sell them for about a fiver.
probably cheaper now

Do you now other e-shops that sell preowned Xbox consoles and ship to Europe (Greece)?

Thanks in advance.

Posted by valvehead on 11-06-2008 01:17 PM:

I got the ndure boot software working in the end, after enabling usb keyboard support in the bios (even though the usb keyboard works fine in the bios with it set to disabled, strange?)

Got Xbmc & Pcsxbox up and running. The psx emulator runs pretty well, I like how you can run the games from the hard drive, not like the PS2 where you can only run them from the disk.

I haven't got a component lead yet but I'm guessing the quality is a lot better than the crappy composite lead that comes bundled with the xbox. I've seen them on shitbay for £7 so £17 in total ain't bad for an upscaling media player, pity it can't handle 720p rips as I can't get my pc's dvi to ouput to my tv's hdmi for some reason.
