If you had read above you'll see that the Pal signal will show... just that the vertical portion will be squashed.. using an apex 1100 to play the video and a fairly new and expensive sony TV... sony isn't capable of multisync...

If you're using a small tv you probably aren't noticing anything...

What model Apex do you have because the Apex-5131 doesn't do that, I've watched it on a 40" and a 20" TV so this rules out the comment some other person made about "if you're watching on a small tv you probably won't notice".. I didn't notice on a big TV

PAL to NTSC

Well i hate watching squeezed movies as well.

Emerson evc 1595 is a converter from pal to ntsc and cost around 140-150$. There are more expensive ones as well.

I still dont know IF the conversion will look the same as the conversion the dvd is making. like compresseing 576 into 480.

I have to do some more research since there are many conversion boxes out there. Since I live in usa and its hard to get a tv that can play true pal.

It might be worth it, if the box can make a perfect conversion.

hmmm... wonder if it's an issue with certain Apex models in particular then.... 5131 is the 3 disc Apex correct? 2 of my friends have that player... time to test out this theory tonight...

/action hopes for the best :crosses fingers:

I have apex ad-700. I burned the mpeg sample as PAL with nero. I havent tried the .bin. I suppose it gives the same result : squeezed vertically.

Hmm, when i set to "PAL" with the apex, it goes b&w and start to scroll down forever. If set to NTSC (svcd is pal), it plays but squeezed.

I know exactly what you're saying... The setting for NTSC, PAL, or Multi under the APEX setup display menu.. You're supposed to set the setting according to what TV you have.... Did have some weird results this time around...

Somethings kinda weird here... I've tried two PAL releases previously Knockaround.Guys.SVCD.DVDRip-FLiX as well as Road.to.Perdition.SVCD.DVDRip-FLiX and both releases played squashed vertically on an APEX 1100w... Never tried those on one of my two friends older APEX AD-5131 players...

So anyways I stopped by my friends yesterday and tested Daredevil.DVDRip.SVCD-TCF ... Edit: the AR was wrong on the 1100w and 5131 as well....

Looks like i'll have to be careful if i purchase an AD-5131 now as well.. turns out APEX made some changes for the worse to that model as of last fall... forums at www.nerd-out.com (apex forum)

I have both phone booth and daredevil (sample) squashed vertically. It's weird u got urs working and some not.

NTSC televisions have the same screen aspect ratio as PAL ones; it's just that PAL has more horizontal lines then NTCS. This means if the video is squashed from 576 lines to 480 and displayed on an NTCS television it will be the correct aspect ratio.

What normally happens in bad NTSC to PAL conversions is the video is cropped to 480 lines and then displayed full screen which makes it look stretched vertically, not squashed. If it really is being squashed vertically then you will have black bars on the top and bottom of the picture but this is normally happens when displaying NTCS video on PAL televisions, not the other way around.

You want to tell me what i'm seeing on my own TV with some PAL releases? Squashed... learn it and remember it... lol Maybe your explanation is what happens on other players, but not on this apex... going to have to do some testing before i purchase another player as it appears for some different groups PAL releases give different AR on Apex's....

Edit: Oh and as far as the rip goes.... 10/10/7

Went back again, looked a little more carefully on my TV,and definately the second pic... Guess I should have been paying attention more instead of drinking... So that throws my whole thing about the AR being correct out the window...

I think that also applies to all the others who claim that they see the correct aspect ratio.

Maybe not all, but many.
