Pretty nice colors, but the fact that tc is ws and got 5.1 is enough for me to skip this one. Gimme dvdscr or retail

BTW Terminator800: "The WS version crops portions of the top and bottom image, while the FS version crops the left and right. Up to you."

That is incorrect ws doesnt crop out anything on top or bottom. So WS is preferred by most people who dont like missing out on the full original image the way the movie was shot.

Although the TC's source audio was from unmastered 5.1 (hacked/extracted from theatrical disc) this copy in my opinion sounds better/more vibrant, maybe the process TGSC uses alters the 5.1 or isn't a lossless technique because it doesn't sound like mastered 5.1 (Matrix Reloaded retail for example has much better audio than CTP's 5.1CH TS DVDR). Even so, if you're referring to the SVCD version of the TC then it isn't 5.1 since mpeg-2 technically can not preserve that. And you're comment about WS/FS is not 100% true either, it depends on the original matting. One example of what Terminator800 mentioned was the screener releases for Men In Black 2, TEG's version was FS cropped left/right and TCF's was WS cropped bottom/top. As someone mentioned in another thread a while ago, even movies shown in theatres aren't matted and theatre's have to add the black bars with their equipment depending on the size of their screens. When a studio masters a DVD they make the same decision. Just thought I'd kick some knowledge for ya

and in the case of this movie..it was formatted 2.35 to 1..wich means, nothing is taken off the top and bottoms in the ws versions....

First off, its true its not as good as a dvd-mastered 5.1 track, however thats not what I said, but fact remains that the 5.1 track on the tc.dvdr is far superior to the stereo mp2 of this screener. Of course Im not referring to the svcd.tc when I mentioned 5.1, Im no 'tard. However there is something called mpeg 5.1 or mpeg multichannel audio, its not commonly used but if you thought SVCDs could never have 5.1 tracks, think again, its possible, just not widely supported.

My comment about ws not cropping anything out is not correct for all cases, just most, and its a comment about ws vs fs in general and typically fs is cropped on sides and ws not cropped signicicantly. There are exceptions but they are few and not worth mentioning when discussing this release in particular.

Most WS movies are cropped from top and bottom. This is called matting. When you watch the movie in the theater or WS dvd, usually all WS movies are matted top and bottom because the director didn't want to show more image. If you don't believe T3 WS is cropped top and bottom, then do a comparison and it'll be obvious. I did.

Video a bit grainy in dark scenes, colors good though. Audio fine.

Compared the tcf fs to replica ws, ws isnt cropped top/bottom anymore than fs is as far as I can see

very nice indeed and I especially like the fact that it was released full screen. I don't know about the rest of you but I still like movies full screen even though I have a nice tv that can handle widescreen. Just my 2 cents.

Anyways, sound is excellent and picture is just as good with crisp and bright colors.

Question

I also noticed that the sound is out of sync (on disc 1 at least - haven't got disc 2 yet)

They appear to have used DVD-SVCD to encode this. I think its caused by adding the logo at the beginning and the disc change logo at the end of disc 1. The same happened to me when I ripped some DVD's - changing the options in DVD-SVCD got rid of the problem.

To be honest I'm no expert - it might only cause problems on some players. Did any one else notice this problem?

On a postive note the sound is very clear and the picture looks very clear too. Just a shame about the audio sync. But then beggars can't be choosers

Why does everyone hate FS.
I prefer FS because it uses the full space on the tv, having black bars on the top/bottom is a waste of space on the screen.
Not everyone has a widescreen tv.

january1973, a screener is a rip from a VHS tape not a DVD.

EricM, Look in the "extra" folder on CD1 and you will see that they did in fact use DVD2SVCD at some point.
