Or there are no forced subs in the movie for the foreign speech... Kinda like Snatch, the pikey speaking wasn't forced subbed (like it wasn't in theaters either).

Thumbs down no subs +

If all goes right, nuked for get proper...here is hoping...

Yes I agree it should be nuked for a bad rip and no subtitles svcd is also missing subtitiles.

Found out there were no subs in the theater run during the "foreign" speech, so most likely they won't be on the retail DVD either. This is an assumption though, but usually subs in theaters would be hard subs printed directly on the print, not soft subs. Which might mean no forced subs are there on purpose for a reason only the DC can explain (which was cut), or to maintain the way it was shown in theaters.

Rip is fine... At most a PPF patch is all that would be needed to fix up some of the authoring. Took me few minutes to fix it myself. Definitely doesn't warrant a "proper" nor a "nuke", at most an internal release with a few extras might come out.

People are just too wasteful these days

the subs are on the disc, they just don't appear automatically you have to turn them on yourself. however there's no dedicated track for just that section, so either it turns them on and off very quickly, or there's a missing subtrack.

I really don't care about the subs, didn't remember them being on the screener either. I love this movie and my rip was fine. Limited about of chapters and a second disc with the extras would be nice to see as well. Lets just hope it will come soon like the Matrix Revolutions did.

did anyone noticed that the text is cut off on the sides??
also it is FS :P

Posted by Mercenary13 on 04-08-2004 10:49 PM:

It's not actually FS I got it to play normal with xbox media player. But my dvd player plays it as fullscreen.

Posted by pHo on 04-09-2004 12:25 AM:

i care about the subs because it tells you part of the story!

and the fs problem is probably down to bad flags i guess, so some dvd players are fine some aren't.

the movie was great. there english subs worked fine the french one's were okay i guess, i didn't have them on long enough to see any problems i guess. the only problem was the text at the start was cut off on the sides. my dvd player (sony) played it as full-screen but on pc it was WS with the video switching to WS back and forth.

:P

But if you were sitting in the theater, you wouldn't have the subs either... So technically, it's like you saw it in theaters

Back to the WS/FS thing for the others:

Either way, this release is sounding messed up... The whole FS/WS thing is strange... There is no indication that the movie is FS in the IFOs. I did HAVE a similar problem with Finding Nemo at my GFs parents place. Their DVD player was set to pan and scan 4:3 instead of letterbox 4:3 (or was it the other way around... should be what I just wrote though). Only affects 4:3 TVs on certain movies. This could be one of them, not sure, don't have a 4:3 TV to test it out

i can't believe they wouldn't have shown that sequence subtitled in the cinema.. makes no sense to include a translation subtitled and then not to show anyone except the deaf :P without the subs, the scene makes very little sense, so the dvd is bound to have flags to turn them on at that point. otherwise its just dumb.

a lot of prints these days have no english onscreen text in order to ship the same print worldwide, the onsceen text is then displayed with switched subs. take Usual Suspects for example, because on the UK release at least, they bodged it up at the beginning (doesn't say 6 Months Earlier) , and i expect they've used the same method here.

Hmm, well I guess we'll have to wait a couple more days to find out till the retail.

My guess why there are no subs (that is of course assuming I am correct about my cinema/DVD theory) is that the main character is making shit up on the spot in his elaborate stories (especially that he learned the language on the plane right before jumping). I also swear that the languages are switching between cantonese in the beginning to mandarin mid way through. Would have to watch it again to see for sure. Also funny that the twins spoke English in the beginning, but he then chose to speak chinese instead (this I would also have to re-watch to verify). So assuming I am correct, I bet most of the conversation didn't make sense to begin with. I hope my memory is working and the two points above are valid

Anyone out there know Mandarin? Need translation

Posted by ThrashNCarve on 04-11-2004 05:34 AM:

I too was very disappointed when I saw that it was Fullscreen. I was thinking, why would anybody want FS except for those naive little kids or old people that don't realize what the black bars are really for. But then I read this thread and tried it on my PC and it really is Widescreen. I don't know why it does that my DVD player(Denon av700) plays the movie as fullscreen. Guess I will use my TV-out to watch this one.

Posted by pHo on 04-11-2004 01:34 PM:

the girls are speaking mandarin (from memory) whilst the guards are speaking korean, hence the lang changes. and u don't need a translation, just press the subs button at the right place, its not the fact the subs are missing its the fact they don't show up at the appropriate time.

I finally fixed my problem and was able to get widescreen on my DVD player. All the other DVD's I have played, which were all rentals, played widescreen automatically. This release of Bigfish was different. I was able to force widescreen by going into my video options and changing the display settings. I had to choose from:
4:3
4:3 LB
16:9 Widescreen

I switched over to 4:3 LB and voila! Bigfish is now forced to widescreen mode. Maybe this will help some of you who were stuck with Fullscreen.

: i expect you'll lose some resolution that way, but its a good temp fix for those with probs. -pHo

There wasn't any loss from what I could see. It was better than playing it through my TV-out, that's for sure.

Sorry about late entry but why hasent this release been nuked yet? The last chapter is missing. The film just stops and goes back to the menu and starts playing the film again. This is poor. Especialy when ur whole family is watching it and the film goes tits up on you!

played all the way thru for me. bad burn?

Played perfect for me... I was another victim of the 'FS' problem... Instead of forcing the movie to WS, i simply zoomed out one click, and it was fine for me... Granted, it was a tad smaller, but not enough to bother me.
