Theres not much chance of humans ending the universe but I don't think its beyond the realms of science fiction that man could destroy Earth, maybe even the Solar System.

They say this particle accelerator will accelerate the particles to so close to the speed of light that they would very likely produce mini black holes, these mini black holes will decay and disappear in an instant though, so no danger. There is no reason whatsoever for them to even attempt to create one that could sustain itself, but if they could, that would end the earth and anything in its vicinity pretty quickly, wouldn't affect the wider universe though.

Nothing bad is going to happen. In reality, if it doesn't produce a Higgs boson, nothing is going to happen and it's back to the drawing board. Either way I'm pretty sure we're gonna see the standard model be superseded by something else fairly soon.

How do we know this isn't just some gigantic con-trick to wangle billions of €uros of taxpayers money into a giant job creation scheme? I bet none of the people working on this project is exactly 'poor' and even if nothing works none of us here could ever prove it.

It was switched on today, although the first test firing the lazers will not be until september 10th.
