Yeah, I googled AVCHD after reading your post, and yeah I guess some BR players do play em.
I could only find a few movies in that format.

You can also reauthor many HD rips as BD-player compliant AVC yourself without re-encoding but the process is fiddly and there isn't yet any one-click app which will do the job for you.

i hadn't realized its been about 2 years since my last upgrades... oh well, pricing out a quad core phenom wtih 8gig ram and a 512mb radeon 4000 HD series card... might be a good christmas after all. come to think of it, that'll probably speed up my encoding time just a bit too...

how much machine do you have if you're playing 1080p .264 files? I've got severe stuttering on a sample i downloaded as a test, and that's on a athlon 64 3200 @ 2.2GHz, 2gb ram, radeon x1300 256mb graphics...
I guess its probably time for an upgrade, but what're you using?

Stuttering is due to your pc not being, good enough to play em or may just be your video card i had the same issue on my pent 4 playing 1080p films (full blue ray films not rips)
On the dell xps i can play anything perfect no stuttering or any probs, titles i have tested are
A View from Space - with Heavenly Music (2006) HDDVD 1080p AC3 (8 Audio)
IMAX_-_Fighter.Pilot.Operation.Red.Flag.1080p.BluRay.DTS
Both these are around 12 gig each give or take
Also have the 30 odd gig dark knight as well and plays sweet
And that was using an external drive through usb 2
Saying that my dell is using 8gig 800mhz ram and is using the vista 64bit with 2 tb of hard drive using raid config

My HTPC seems to be struggling with 1080P all of a sudden, so naturally someones been pissing about with it. Therefore, I'll be using the 'iron fist' as a punishment. It's every bit as bad as it sounds.

Yeah, AGP is still pretty common.
The P3 is a server so has no AGP, and 2 PCI slots (more for expandability than graphics mind).

Well, luck fell into my lap... a deploying soldier dumped his desktop on me in favor of his laptop and said do what you will... all for the low low price of free:
hp m8000n media center
athlon 64 x2 5200
4gb pc2-4200
500 gb drive
dual hauppauge tuner
BFG nvidia 8600 gts oc graphics
already ripped vista 32 out and put in vista 64, 1080p plays sooooooo smoothly... put the cccp pack on, running it through media center.

If anyone is interested in a standalone MKV player, this might be an answer.

I'm seriously considering getting one, most of the reviews are rather good for it.
A pretty good review

A far as the WD HD player, Id wait for a new firmware. I did not like it one bit. Some files played perfectly and some did not. No difference in packing, codec or container. Just luck fo the draw. Menu was nice but a little slow, seeking/searching was god awful but worked (if you can call 20 sec pauses working). Id also have to suggest a universal remote with it as the included one blows donkey dick. Did not get to look at the supported drive specs, IE filesystems. Lets hope its better than Xbox360s (no ntfs??? wtf)
For those of you running AGP or low end/old systems, try upgrading to the newest nvidia drivers, 180.11. I tossed em on my old AGP/archlinux box before i dismantled it and all of a sudden its playin 1080p @ 75% cpu usage. Spikes to 100% every so often and filters just destroy it but it plays em.
