Sky is no longer the only way to access exclusive content. Their advertising revenue has fallen off a cliff. There's a massive recession coming and subscription TV is something a lot of people will find they can live without.

I'm not saying I think Sky will disappear overnight, but probably before 3D becomes a domestic reality which could be some years away, if ever.

It's true that Sky is a luxury, but the majority of users would find it hard to give up Sky+ functionality and would likely only downgrade their service rather than give it up. Now that HD boxes have come down in price and channel lineup increased it is likely that proliferation will increase as people find cheaper forms of entertainment.

Additionally Sky own exclusivity on many "must see" shows which they rent out to the other service providers whose coverage isn't as widespread as their own.

Remember when we had Astra and BSB - that became Sky how many years ago? Since then they've outsourced a number of services including customer support, installation, and box production; they've bought up a large number of show rights and partnered with US providers, and refined their service from analog to digital; from 60cm dishes to minidish, killed Tivo in the UK, and gone on to HD - which they're still a front-runner for.

Like it or not I don't see Sky disappearing in the near future, if ever. Content delivery may be big now but we don't have a network to support it en masse, which is where Sky Anytime succeeds - once they support personalised suggestions it will kill off the BT Vision offerings.

For those US readers wondering what we're talking about, Sky is our equivalent of DirecTV.

I'd much rather have a 21:9 display device right now than a 3D one. Most of my viewing is of 2.35:1 movies although I do watch a few 3D animations as well.

agree ,would rather cut down unneeded channels than kill the subscription

Anything worth watching is on usenet within minutes in HD!
All the major sports events are obtainable somewhere

I'm in total agreement with this... While there's some shows on Sky I'd like to watch and specific channels that I'd like to have, I refuse to buy into their stupid "packs" idea for the channels. Call my cynical but they appear designed to "miss" a channel that should be in one pack and put it in another to encourage you to buy both. Well guess what Mr Sky, FUCK YOU, FUCK YOU WITH A RUSTY CLAW HAMMER.

Seriously, if I could pay a small fee to get Sky One and a handful of other specific channels I'd get it tomorrow but the channels I want are spread throughout the channel packs so fuck em, I'll stick with Usenet and if I'm in a hurry I'll use the option to play while downloading in AltBinz

I wouldn't expect a glut of Sky subbers in here, but for the majority of the country who don't understand usenet/torrents, it does the job - and will for a while yet!

Not without special glasses and in some cases an add-on box of special trickery. Even then the results are very hit & miss.

I went to the theatre to see Coraline in 3D.

I went in thinking it would be a gimmick.
Turned out it blew my mind.

I dont think i could or would be able to watch it on a normal TV after i'd seen it in
the new glorious 3D.

I got sky for the football, everyone in our house is footy mad.

btw before starviews dbox 2's

All the footie fans around here have big dishes pointed in a different direction to Sky. Don't know why though?

gimmicky, not fun. head tracking will have it's purpose for gaming, all other 3d is basically still shit.

Totally.

I actually watch far more movies, a lot quicker, and have access to every PL match live (and from virtually every major sports event in virtually any league) since giving up Sky...all thanks to bethere for about £20/month.

However, the reports that I've read about Sky's 3D footy trial (same one linked in NS's post) may be the only thing that would make me consider a subscription.

There are PLENTY of torrent/direct dl sites where members cap matches. One in particular I'm involved with is has virtually every game from the top leagues around Europe (everything from goal highlights to full games, usually in everything from halfsize rmbv through avi/x264 to full HD) and quite a bit from South America and the odds bits from US/Australia/Africa. If there's a game which has even the remotest interest it'll be available.

Search "football" and "torrents" you'll find plenty enough sites.
