Nope, not slipping at all. Another gold and another world record yesterday keeps GB in 3rd. Silver and Bronze medals are given to the first and second losers, why would we be counting them?

lets see someone hunt up the medal tally per population

Yep, Australia do very well at every Olympics. Just proves what Brits can do when they live in a warm Climate. I like to see our Ozzie brothers do well, its another chance to see the Union Jack when their flag goes up.

You found only 1? you didn't look very hard, I just checked and the first Australian gold medal winners I checked all had English surnames

Brennan, Page, Ginn, Wilmot.

Brennan has the best derivation -

Brennan- Reginald Brennehand 1229 Whitby. Derived from - 'Burn Hand', a nickname for the official who carried out the harsh punishment of medieval law. Matilda Brendhand 1295.

Ginn-An Aphetic form of engin - 'skill, ingenuity'. First found - Henry, Roger Gin.

Still rising, 4 more golds including 400m track.

Although I'm pleased the UK is doing well, it's funny that we're focussing on the number of golds we've won but if we'd won an assload of silver instead we'd rapidly be counting the overall medals won... We have done pretty bloody well this time around though when you consider the size of the UK.

Agreed, Kudos to all the athletes. It's been an amazing Olympics.

I feel there was a few bad calls, but overall rather fair. My only qualm is with China with a couple of events in the female gymnastics (Vault, Uneven Bars) That's really it.

As far as I know, the medals table is always ordered by number of golds. A country with 100 non gold medals will always be below any country with just 1 gold.

Shit, those two Brit chicks were unlucky in the Swim marathon, both were leading most of the race, just got chased down by a butch russian in the last 100 m. Another silver and bronze for GB.;

BMX'ing is on today, can't remember ever seeing that at the Olympics.

I think you're right.

The U.S.A has more medals then China but there above us on the list.

Yeah I heard that as well, I can't wait to see some BMXing on there. I was told this was the first year for it. Can't wait to see if Skateboarding gets on. They should be in the Olympics.

Posted by Munson on 08-21-2008 12:15 AM:

Yes. That is correct. Medals are medals. You see silver is for 2nd place and bronze is for third and every country has the same opportunity to win all of them. Neato, huh?

Discounting the "non-gold" medals
Sour grapes.

Just like the swimming events should'nt count.

It's not discounting them... but 2nd and 3rd best isn't "the best" now is it?

That's exactly the point.

You should always strive to be the best. If your not then do better.

Posted by Munson on 08-21-2008 03:27 AM:

2nd & 3rd place is not 1st place. True.

Its all relative and can be measured any number of ways and on the grand scheme really means little to nothing at all imo. Unless, I suppose, if your from a country where you'll take a fuckin beatin if you lose.

You should always strive to be the best. If your not then do better.
because than you can be the best of the best of the best....

looking forward to seeing the mountain bike race. hoping for some horrendous wipeouts.
