Yeah phoronix got full 1080p playback with just a $30 gpu and a $20 cpu back in december ( http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...vdpau_gpu&num=1 ). You don't need the top end hardware (especially with how well the nvidia vdpau/purevideohd drivers have improved over the past few months) to get playback, just newer hardware that supports offloading the video to the gpu.

So I've got this AVCHD version of City of Ember but I haven't got a Blu-Ray standalone so I can't test it. I can extract the .mts stream and play that no problem. Power DVD tells me I need a BR compatible graphics card and no doubt a HDMI monitor after that. So does anyone know of a software player which can handle a BR file structure without all this region-coding and HDCP baggage?

I can use win media player 11 with cccp codec and play the BR file structure, and that's on a laptop without hd and its old

Have a read through this thread there's about 4 different software players out there use what's best for you

XP is now able to open the iso and MPCHC can play the BD file structure

Looks like menus and extras wont be far off for dvd5 and dvd9 but personally i will wait for blue ray single and dual layers to come out more (theres around 50 out so far)

Great stuff but wil it still fit a DVD5 after being converted to AVCHD? I ask because I use Verbatim printables exclusively and the DL type is a lot more expensive as well as being much slower to burn.

What is the difference between an AVCHD disc and a BD5/9 disc, if any?

I've also heard that the x264 needs to be encoded to a particular spec for it to be compatible with the PS3 or BD players when remuxed from MKV for m2ts. (For example, it has to be full resolution, e.g. 1280 x 720, so black bars must be encoded into the file for 'scope films, etc.)

From what i have been told full blue ray disks are compatable across all boards there may be 1 or 2 BR Player brands that maybe touchy with br disks but verbatum usually work, well they did with all dvd players i shoved em into, and ritek i find was the better dye.
So i would assume now the price of blue ray blanks and recorders are coming down we should see a slow dry up of dvdr movies and BR pushed forward, like it has been so far with directors cut's extended cuts and mostly dts as a standard.

As for AVCHD disc and a BD5/9 disc i cant say much on but with the x264 at present is a right bitch you have to encode say 1 way for a ps3 another for BR players or normal dvd players (dvd5 and dvd-9 disks)

But from the talks i have had with people were going to see a lot more BR complete films coming out, and so far the 1's i have seen are full with different languages so straight away you can rip them out as they usually dts, just a pity a lot of films released so far(older films) are just crap with the same shit that was on normal dvd just better sound and most of the time better pic

Worst i have seen is commando 1080p and the fifth element 1080p(not remastered version)

Will check out on the AVCHD disc and a BD5/9 disc and report back, i do seem to remember the BD5/9 are more stable to play if i remember right

WMV is pretty much for 360.
AVCHD is pretty much PS3


BD5/9 i am thinking is goin to be for NR players

doesn't AVCHD use the same (well, pretty close) file structure as BR ? An AVCHD transcode from an mkv file will go on a dvd (file size permitting), and should offer playback with chapters on ps3 and bluray standalones as long as the correct resolutions are offered (I say should as i'm going off hearsay and therefore might be talking out of my arse).

It's about time sony released a patch offering full mkv support for the ps3
