I was visiting the local rent office a few years ago to report a repair. There was a bloke in front of me claiming housing benefit. He was dressed like a builder. He had bag over his shoulder which looked as if it contained a bricklayer's tools. He reeked of cement dust and looked fitter than I do. The woman at the counter was reading his claim form back to him so I could hear every word:
"You live on your own?"
"Yes"
"You get £179.90 a week in incapacity benefit and that is your only income?"
"Yes"
Bear in mind this was a few years ago so the amount he gets is probably a lot higher today.

even if you are on full rate dla you can still work upto 15 hours a week in some cases i believe, the 179 quid a week sounds to much for incapacity benifit tho he must have been on dla

There is an hypocrisy, Wob is right, many of us on here steal from somebody although I think there's a moral distinction between grabbing a movie/music/game online and defrauding benefits, even if the distinction is all in my head. I still maintain that somebody who wants to remain on benefit instead of joining the workforce isn't some cunning genius who should be revered, they're just happy with mediocrity and lack ambition. Don't care really if they're frauds or not cos no doubt I'd still have to pay the same taxes regardless, I almost feel sorry for them, they've pretty much decided they'll never amount to anything. Sad really.__________________

The band members began as friends who knew each other from various colleges and schools across Birmingham. The name "UB40" was selected in reference to a paper form issued by the UK government's Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS) at the time of the band's formation for claiming unemployment benefit. The designation UB40 stood for Unemployment Benefit, Form 40. [1]
Before any of them could play their instruments, Ali Campbell and Brian Travers travelled around Birmingham promoting the band, putting up UB40 posters. The band purchased its first instruments from Woodroffe's Musical Instruments with £4,000 in compensation money that Campbell, who would become the lead singer, received after a bar fight during his 17th birthday celebration.
Their first gig took place on February 9, 1979 at The Hare & Hounds Pub in Kings Heath, Birmingham for a friend's birthday party.
