What should I be looking for in a new TV that I would be looking to keep for the next 3-5 years. Are there any up and comming extra's to future proof my purchase? Any certain 'features' I should be avoiding?

I can only speak from personal experience I'm not a vapid technophile like pHo is (who will probably disagree with everything in this reply

), assuming you're going the Hi-def route I'd recommend looking at either:
Samsung (because of the features), especially the M86/87 which has three HDMI connectors, which is rare. I'm also a "fan" of the Panasonic Viera and Sony Bravia series of TV's due to the excellent picture quality but they're pricey. For a compromise between price/functionality/picture quality I have a gaping anus for LG TVs - I have both a LG HDTV and a Panasonic Viera and both are fantastic (yes, I have two Hi-def TV's, fuck you!).

Features? Well, connectors, connectors, connectors! You need at least two HDMI connectors but try and get more. At least one RGB scart (plus others), Component and DSub (VGA) is also a bonus.

With regards to features on the TV, avoid pointless bollocks. My LG has a picture-in-picture facility which is pointless IMHO. Most HDTV sets have various options for tidying-up standard definition pictures, in this regard I'm impressed by both Sony and LGs approaches.

In fairness though, I'd advise picking your budget and then getting your arse to one of those Curry's "Megastores" at a retail park and compare the various TVs - then go home and buy the twat for £200 less at Empire Direct

Because I'm no specialist on the subject and this response is my opinion as opposed to carefully researched fact I'd advise reading the CNet buyers guides for HDTV here: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7874_1-5102926-1.html

But my personal opinion is to focus on LG, Samsung and Panasonic and go from there - Hitachi and Sony offer little improvement but a whole load of assfuck on price
