i am just saying some comments are far beyond good taste. don't get me wrong, i love the mundane character of this forum....just...where is the limit?

What's offensive to one person won't be offensive to another (obviously). Personally I draw the line at anything that isn't intended to be ironic or tongue-in-cheek... Like Cupidstunt's comment - it's obviously not a racist slur even if it would be under different circumstances. But yeah, context makes a big difference and each mod on here has their own opinion of what's ok and what isn't, although we're all pretty much on the same page.

The limit? Anything illegal, anything "grim" in the forum (NSZ is excluded) that isn't tagged with a warning and anything racist that's said with malice...

... Personally though, it doesn't do it for me, I prefer jokes about rape and cripples.

Do you mean my avatar (cos I can't see anything else on that page) - it's from the BBC's "Life on Mars" cop show... In one scene then main character (Sam Tyler) finds himself in a 1970s kids TV show called Camberwick Green. Having watched the same show as a kid, I liked it

If you haven't seen it, you HAVE to see Life on Mars before it's "remade" for US TV and completely fucked up

Well, periodically Dwaggy will do a "Post in here and I'll abuse your avatar" thread... Generally speaking, he picks a theme and runs with it. Most recently it was porno movies but it was a college yearbook prior to that I think. He's also drawn them previously.

- basically, for an Icelander, he isn't a cunt.

Dear Mr. Neversoft,

How the fuck can Nintendo make Mario Kart DS using only 32 MB (24.3 MB) when trimmed?

I know it's only a little screen but i find it bloody amazing.

Also do you find yourself sticking too many games on your micro SD card then wondering what one to play?

Well, it doesn't have shitloads of hi-res textures or stunning audio, just a few sprites, audio that is "generated" by the DS instead of streaming it and a few maps... Modern games are the size they are due to the textures, fmv and the soundtrack - not a concern for DS games. Think of the DS as the bastard love child of the SNES and N64, then take a look at the size of their roms

Also, bare in mind that a .nds file is just a wrapper for the files inside, these can be compressed just like any others. Want to see the contents of a .nds file? Grab DSLazy and knock yourself out - maybe even do a few "custom" games for yourself

Yep, although I didn't join until May 2002 (IIRC)... and it still looks the same now as it did then, although (as I'm sure you noticed) the forum's are a little more, erm, repugnant nowadays

Well, I'mm 99% sure that Maplin or Farnell could supply a replacement but you'd have to find one with the correct specs yourself - look in the manual, hopefully it will tell you something about the fan (or Google). But basically, if you can work out the dimensions, power consumption and power supply you should be able to stick any decent fan on (it's a fairly standard connector on the twat). Either that or look at one of the overclocking sites for one of those custom swanky replacements for GPU fans that are available.

If you tell me which card it is, I might do a little better... If you don't know, run Belarc Advisor and tell me what IT thinks you have

It's a Connect3D Radeon 9000 64MB AGP. The existing fan has recently started making a grinding noise when the PC is powered up. I've read that some 9000s are OK with passive cooling only, but didn't want to risk simply removing the fan.

I know it's a shit card for gaming, but it's from my son's PC and he doesn't need anything fancy.

Then again, he loves Lego Star Wars II so I'd consider getting him a new £20 card if that's going to be easier than trying to find a new fan. So, which is faster, a Radeon 9250 or a GeForce FX5200? (I could look it up myself but that kinda defeats the purpose of this thread...)

Posted by Neversoft on 09-18-2007 01:05 PM:

Well, the fan would probably set you back a tenner anyway so I'd grab one of the cards you mention. Although, the ATI card is faster, it only supports >directX 8 whereas the Nvidia is marginally slower but supports DX9.

Look on eBuyer.co.uk cos they're seriously cheap on GFX cards, you should be able to pick something fairly spunky up for £30.

I could possibly get one of these for £3 which looks like it's the right size to fit; I'd have to connect it up to the system fan header on the motherboard but I don't think that's a problem.

And ebuyer are a bunch of retards. What do you expect from a company based in Rotherham?

Posted by Neversoft on 09-18-2007 07:25 PM:

Coming from sunny Barnsley I can testify to the fact that Rotherham is the "greyest" town I've ever seen... Although it doesn't have as many scummy weirdos as Castleford or Wakefield

I popped in my local PC World and picked up one of those 4cm fans. Although it was the right size to fit over the heatsink, it was thicker than the original fan so the existing screws weren't long enough. So I ended up just supergluing the new fan on. Seems to have stuck OK, and the grinding sound has stopped.
