Right, I've got myself some Certified Grade-A disks. Manufactured by Ritek (Sumvision branded though) with the G05 dye... These had better work, they're nice and shiny!

::EDIT:: They work super \o/ I'm as happy as a pig in shit.

They're awesome discs, I've been using them since I modded my 'cube a few years back. I've honestly only had one screw up on me. No complaints.

Anyone know if the Wii is capable of dual layer media? Just on the off chance any upcoming games will be a tad...bigger?

Thought I would bring this into this thread, so as not to hijack any other thread. There is now an update for the Wiikey that will let you play Galaxy! Seems a lot of faffing about to get it to play on a pal machine though. The game needs to update your fw to play, so if you do this you get multiple news/weather channels which you cant remove. I did read a workaround on another site though..

This game works OK on NTSC and PAL Wii if you have d2ckey, wiikey (with 1.9g update from wiikey.cn) or cyclo-wiz (with latest update). I am not sure about JAP Wii.

If you use this on a PAL Wii you will get duplicate channels unless you:

1) Update to latest version (3.1E)

2) Burn SMG (without WiiBrickBlocker patch) and update to about 10-15% and pull the power plug

3) Patch SMG with WiiBrickBlocker, burn and play.

If your chip doesn't have region auto patching you will need to apply NTSC to PAL patch as well (before burning anything).

I have recently tested this my self on my PAL Wii with WIIKEY, and it works just fine. Remember to select your preferred tv mode after the update!

If you allready have duplicate channels (from mp3), or if you get duplicate channels with smg, it doesn't seem to matter, other than the fact that you will have some duplicate channels in the wii menu.

...and as always, there is a risk of bricking your wii if you use different region games on your wii WITHOUT updating your wii to the latest version first.

Seems risky just pulling the plug mid update..

What chip is in yours fuckface? Mines a WiiFree so I need either that or YAOSM to be updated... The good news is that Bell is looking at Yaosm to try and sort this, although he's in the PAL region and is reluctant to experiment with the "only" old-style PAL Wii at his disposal with US games with firmware updates...

... Now, once SMG is out in the PAL region I reckon YAOSM will get an update reasonably quickly.

I'm 99.9% sure its a Wiikey of sorts. To be honest, I really dont know. I took it to some bloke and handed over 40 notes for the chip plus installation... He said it was a Wiikey but it was only until a few days later I read that there were WiiKey clones, so it might be genuine, it might be a clone. I emailed him, but received no reply so i'm leaning towards clone.

Grinch mentioned that it makes zero difference though... I can still use WiiKey updates on a clone chip.

For the moment I'm going to leave it as is... I'm going to buy Galaxy anyway. If other games start using this protection I'll consider updating the chip then.

I'm looking into getting mine done but don't know much about it. I like the idea of the wiifree as its open source but don't like the idea of constantly reprogramming the chip (well, getting someone else to do it) if need-be. From the little I do know about the commercial chips, I take it the wiikey is the best?

I just need to find someone who's good at soldering.

In fairness, the Cyclowiiz is probably the best commercial chip... It's easier to update and the dev team seem to be organised/active.

With regards to Mario Galaxy I just read on a forum that the copy protection detects the modchip.. if this is the case, if I bought it this Friday (Which I was planning on doing) Will the disk detect the modchip and still not play, even if its legit?

Modchip is disabled when originals are put in. It's confirmed that the original of Mario Galaxy will work fine.

Super Mario Galaxy does a minor update, not a full system update. If the backup of Super Paper Mario is the same as your system then there's no harm in letting it update. The safest route is connect your wii to the net, do a system update, you'll now be on the latest firmware and SPM shouldn't even ask you.

Alternatively dig out Brickblocker and run it on the ISO, it'll remove the update partition. Doesn't work on all games, but it's the safest way.

Also with regard to your DREs, it's more than likely your discs. Either that or you're having the same problem I did with the wii/modchip overheating. When switching off the Wii hold down the power button on the console till the light goes red (not orange). Leave it like this for about half a day and try all the non working backups. Did the trick for me.

Now whenever I switch my Wii off I just poor it down fully (red light) rather than living it in Wii connect mode which leads to overheating.

I never leave it on wii connect 24 so it cant be overheating.

ill do a update via internet ,then ill spin SPM again to see if it prompts me to update

i jus thought it a lil strange tha SMG worked but paper didn

dre's again i find strange b'cus of the fact that some work some dont

The Wii is a little picky about it's media... Try and source some decent disks with the Ritek G05 dye.

For anyone who hasn't 'updated' their Wii yet..

linky

Be a tad careful of the wlip, there are reports of it overheating. It was advertised some time ago, then taken back from sale whilst they sorted the problems out. I don't know if it's 100% fixed or not

Aye, nothing too interesting yet but it's promising.

Also apparently Brawl doesn't work with modchips...like, the original disc. Or so early reports say.
