Dire Straits? I like em but I won't agree at all.

Oasis? No, just no. They imitated the fucking The Beatles. Just like White Snake or White Lion imitated Led Zep.

I guess since you grew up in the 90's and want to claim Oasis was influential to music be my guest. Just know that you're wrong.

Linnets I think I went to HS with the fag in your avatar.

Dunno if the "grew up in the 90's" thing was at me, but I'm 36 so had done all my growing up by the 90's. I grew up with S.A.W. music. (Rick Astley ftw!!).

Anyway. Yes Oasis were Beatles wannabe's (is that a bad thing? Who wouldn't wannabe the Beatles?). But, this thread is about influential albums, and I can't honestly see how you can deny that DM and (WTS)MG? were not influential albums. Even if a lot of the music on them were just poor beatles imitations. The amount of kids that would have picked up guitars because of those albums would have been enormous, and a lot of the guitar pop/rock that appeared for better or worse in the following 10 years would definately owe a huge debt to those albums.

There's a big difference between inspiring which is what you're really alluring to and influential.Oasis may have inspired people to pick up and play to I doubt it but they never musically influenced shit.I know several young musicians and they all listen to 60,s70,s music my son who's 21 is big purple and sabbath fan (he owns that guitar) hates oasis.

now I is gonna do a USA list...
The byrds
Love
The doors
The grateful dead
The Allman brothers
Steely dan
The Eagles
Velvet Underground
The Doobie brothers (before that twat mcdonald)
The Marshal tucker band
I'll leave the rest to you lot.

Yes there is a difference between inspiring and influencing. However I don't think someone can inspire you to make music without influencing the finished article. And note I also said that a lot of the guitar based music would have been influenced by them.

Anyway, first result (yes its wikipedia, but its all referenced) on a google search shows The Coral, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian have all stated that Oasis have influenced their music.

As for knowing several young musicians who listen to 60's and 70's music, well I'm sure that there are very many who do and are influenced by it, but there will be an equal amount who are inspired and influenced by those eras along with 80's and 90's music. I'm not trying to say that "older" music isn't equally or more influential than more recent efforts, just that I personally couldn't rule out the importance of the biggest bands of any era, and Oasis certainly were one of those, in influencing future generations of musicians. Just because they're not everyone's cup of tea doesn't mean they aren't influential.

Sorry I have always written sentences that are far too long and rambling. Must use more full stops.

Depends where you draw the line.

Kasabian were influenced by Oasis who were, amongst others, influenced by the Beatles.

Does this mean that if Oasis hadn't formed, Kasabian (for example) would have produced the same style of music they do? Probably not.

Does that make Oasis influential? I'd say so. Although the roots may remain the same throughout each generation, you can't deny a band from being influential in it's current generation.

I like how people keep implying that because Oasis were influenced by The Beatles that it somehow makes them an inferior band.

The Beatles also admit to being inluenced by a number of bands, including The Beach Boys (wtf), does this mean The Beach Boys are better than The Beatles? Depends on your taste I suppose.

I know more Oasis songs than Beatles songs and I prefer Oasis. Beatles were great just a bit before my time and I prefer the updated perfection of Oasis. Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys are both awesome and no doubt some of the kids today will argue that they were the influence behind the next generation of bands.

Kasabian and awesome in the same sentence that's more wrong than bananarama covering midnight rider.I watched them at that gig on the BBC the one where Jonathon Ross was pretending to know about music ,metallica came on after and blew them away .I'll give you arctic monkeys and the killers why you no mention them eh?
But the other 00's bands especially cold fuckinplay all a load of karaoke friendly crap.

You're emotard explains it all.

Actually I quite agree with Gezzer.

I do like the Arctic Monkeys quite a bit but I don't think there original by any means.

If Oasis is influential music, and they were heavily heavily influenced by The Beatles wouldn't that make these other bands influenced by The Beatles as well?

It's like Axel Rose saying I never heard of The Beatles.

Actually cuntflaps, I haven't actually disagreed with anyone elses opinion. It seems that I am the only one having to justify mine.

Maybe its just me but the way I see it is that I expressed my opinion about which albums I thought were influential and suddenly there was a rush of gypo's telling me my opinion was wrong.

I know its a natural reaction for you to consider me to be the instigator but I think if you reread the thread since I joined it you will find that I never tried to force my taste on anyone else, I merely explained why I thought I was right.

So put that in your pube pipe and smoke it, and while your at it, go fuck yourself.

Pulled out some Pink Floyd this week that I hadn't listen to in a few. Still a strong sound and imo one of the best bands ever. Not sure who much influence they had on other bands but still remain one of the top 10 rock bands ever in my list.

Dammit Gilmour just fuckin do it you lazy bastard! Granted Wright past away last September but you still got Waters and Mason who are down for it.
