A few of my personal favorites:

Kagemusha
Old Boy
Visitor Q
Alive
Zatoichi series
Lone Wolf and Cub series (highly recommended)

I'm also a big fan of the old Shaw Bros. kung fu movies with Gordon Liu or the Venoms.

Immortal Enemy :

this is like "Plan 9 from outer Thailand". hardcore vampire trash, so bad, that i had to turn it off after 15 minutes.

Vital :

Hiroshi loses his memory after a car accident and starts to find his way back to normal live. being a medical student he's got to do an autopsy class and soon realises, that the young woman on the dissection table is someone he knows: his girlfriend Ryoko, who died in the car crash. from that point on his memory keeps coming back in fragments.

fans of director shinya tsukamoto (Tetsuo, Tokyo Fist, Bullet Ballet) won't be disappointed. Vital is a very slow, strange and artfull movie, maybe tsukamotos most philosophical work. recommended.

Koma :

a newly wed woman finds a naked female with one of her kidneys removed in her hotelroom. she seems to be the 11th victim of a maniac and surprisingly the cops main suspect is a young woman, who had an affair with mrs. tungs husband ...

a basic thriller, entertaining, but nothing special.

Phone :

Beeing stalked by an accused paedo, journalist Ji-Won moves to a new appartment and gets a new phone number. she keeps getting strange calls, which, once heard by her friends daughter, make the kid go crazy ...

aaaaaaand another ring rip-off with a long haired ghostgirl, hair in the bathtub and all the asian standard spooky stuff. had to turn this mother off after 40 minutes, may be ok if you havent seen them all.

Golden Chicken :

Prostitute (called "Chickens" in HK) Kam is trapped with a robber inside a bank. to kill time she starts to tell him short storys about her life as a hooker ...

well, this is a comedy/drama and since i'm a) not into chinese humour and b) not into chinese history, i stopped watching after 20 minutes. but seems to be a quite ok movie (imdb lists a sequel).

well, I'm not sure if this goes in this category bu I just watched a Movie Called INITIAL D. Pretty good movie. The movie is about a kid who delivers (cant remeber exactly) something like Soy but he makes the deliveries on this particular road so much he gets faster and faster until one day some punks are street racing down this mountain at the same time and he smokes them all. The translation I had for the subtitles was kind of goofie but its really worth checking out. I know you people in here would dig it. Peace. P.S. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439630/

i just got the dvd of azumi 2 : love or death, will watch it tonight and post up a review.

if anyone else has seen it post up a review so i dont have to do it later

Just watched Initial D myself when I found out it was directed by the same guys who did the Infernal Affairs trilogy and it had alot of the same cast (mainly the younger Lau and Chen from IA2 & 3). Visually the film was really good, the effects and setting reminded me of Gran Turismo for some reason, and the opening credits were killer; However the storyline was pretty poor and from what I've heard about the original anime it doesn't stick to it very well.

Its definitely worth a watch though and its FAR better than 'The Fast and The Furious' or its even worse sequel. There is a non-dubbed version with decent subs out now just in case anyone else is interested.

Dir Name: Initial.D.2005.DVDRip.XviD-iMBT

p. your link didn't work for me i'll try it again another day !

hmm well remakes are going to happen...

i'm more bothered by whatever you want to call a 'movie fan' that 97 % of the time won't watch a subbed film *just* because that's right it has subs.

we have plenty and plenty of those in states.they view reading subs as worse then going to the denist....

Posted by baha on 12-23-2005 12:55 PM:

wow! totally forgot about this thread. being up in the attic (when the page loads) means i keep forgetting to look here - who ever goes back to read the stickies at the top of the page?

well, there's probably 200 asian movies i've seen since i last posted...and i think i'll forget about trying to keep this thread updated about em all LOL

the major current news is the proper of 'sympathy for lady vengeance' with official subs (the fansubs were just unwatchable/misleading). i'm planning to watch it tonight/tomorrow and i'll post back with views.

of what i've watched in the last couple of months what really sticks out in the memory is a king hu classic made under the shaw brothers banner come drink with me. it's as beautiful as any other king hu movie, the action is excellently choroegraphed, the characters are well developed...just a class piece of filmmaking by one of the greatest directors of all time! (and it's the basis of 'house of flying daggers' and 'crouching tiger, hidden dragon', the former being almost a direct remake and the latter borrows many storyline elements.)

I like the kung fu movies.

One Armed Boxer 1971

Jimmy Wang Yu as Wang Yu
beats this guy up that is trying to rob someone. the guy that gets beat up goes and tells his master Wang Yu insulted him. the master hires trained killers from foreign lands in his cause to get his respect back. one of the hired killers karate chops Wang Yu's arm off and kills his master and several students. he is found left for dead along side the road. a doctor and his daughter finds him and nurses him back to health. he learns a new fighting style from the doctor and seeks revenge for him his master and his classmates.
the version i have has subtitles but is hard for me to follow because i have dyslexia arg.

hey i gotta ask are you guys asian? anyways not like it matters , but i been reading this thread for awhile and finally got to watch a few films talked about here.

i watched 2 takeshi films, itchi the killer and happiness of teh kawataris, and i thought itci was ok at best, and kawataris i didn't really like.

zatoitchi i thought was ok, but i liked the action scenes, yea its wasnt the best special effects, but i still liked it. are there any other movies that have this type of action? just extremely fast sword swinging with lots of blood.

i saws this film called "RIKI OH" i think, anyways it looked kind of old, and had poor special effects, but damn i loved this movie. its one of the funniest films i have ever seen..not sure if it was meant to be funny or not..can anyone reccomend a film similiar to riki oh?

thanks

oh yea taeguki was really good.

holy crap just finished watching my sassy girl, man this movie is great.

Posted by dvd r on 01-12-2006 02:50 AM:

well i'm not asian. well not that i know of....

sassy girl is cool suprise indeed. anyway some us company has bought the rights/or however i should phrase it. but maybe the remake won't happen. ...

hmm i don't know ...can i mention wong kar wai's 'chungking express'/'fallen angels'. got to love those. well at least i do !

Saat po long/Sha po lang is not bad at all, there are some really cool martial arts scenes.
