Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003)
Mild Spoilers Lie Within
SWEET JESUS.
I know Tarantino is one of the best directors out there, and I knew that he wouldn't make this a bad movie, but I'm just amazed at how much it exceeded my already sky high expectations.
The plot has been done to death, typical revenge scenario. The style however, is brilliant. Every camera angle, strange chaptering job, and even stranger colour tint is spot on (save for a sudden black and whiting of a long action sequence, which I found pretty distracting, it seemed more as if they wanted to censor than make it stylish
)
There's a long sequence midway though that was incredible too, an anime backstory on one of the main characters. Now, I've never been a huge fan of jap animated movies, it always seems like payoff without the masturbation, but in this, it works so well, and is so deliciously gory, I was in awe of it.
The biggest sell point is that the movie is an ORGY OF VIOLENCE. Every cut releases an almost cartoonlike geiser of blood, limbs are severed, eyes are gouged out, and it all comes off as style, not excess.
The acting and dialogue on the main characters is also top notch, but of course you knew that already. I'd love to have Uma kick my ass any day.
Brilliant film, and I can't wait for the conclusion.
