Review: Bad Boys II (2003)

Martin Lawrence really needed this kind of movie after “Black Knight,” “What’s the Worst that Could Happen?” and “National Security.” This sequel is extremely similar to the original film (it follows a somewhat similar format), only, it’s longer and…well…badder. Michael Bay alternates huge explosions with the strange and amusing relationship between the married Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and the trust fund endowed playboy that is Mike Lowrey. (Will Smith) And, in a summer filled with huge cars/truck chases on the highway (T3 and The Matrix Reloaded) “Bad Boys II,” features a very entertaining one.

On too the negative aspects, I’ll put it this way, the script sucks, besides from the comedic dialogue, which seems to be mostly improvised. The car chase should have been kept for the end, but instead, Bay decides to put it with about an hour left in the movie. The plot’s extremely unoriginal. The movie does have it’s moments, apart from the car scene, which features Chevy Malibus flying from an auto carrier and also has a fleet of men with AK-47’s, to add to the total wreckage level. One of the funniest moments in the movie, would have to be when Martin Lawrence’s impersonation of an stoned octopus on mescaline and patio sealant, which occurs during a visit to the captain after he accidently takes two ecstasy pills. Another funny moment would have to be Will Smith’s impersonation of an incoherent ex-con. The movie also features some subplots, one being Will Smith’s attraction to Syd (Gabrielle Union), an undercover DEA agent that also happens to be Marcus’ sister.

Overall, if you were a fan of the first film, you should definitely check this one out. It's a trip worth taking, and I'd give it 7/10.

Thumbs up

It's appalling that pretty much every reliable critic out there is pissing on Bad Boys 2. I absolutely loved it.

I'd like to point out that Michael Bay sucks and Martin Lawrence has pissed me off since Big Momma's House. Even Will Smith made me shake my head with MIB2. I'd also like to say that I did NOT like the first Bad Boys, but at least Lawrence and Smith were funny in it, and there was no pg13 restraint. The sequel is the same way, only much harder and waaaaaay funnier. I can't say i really got into the house raid towards the end, but the earlier action scenes were spectacular, FINALLY there's a car chase scene that can hold its own against Matrix's (You lose, T3.). I'm not by any means saying that BB2 is a better movie than T3 or Matrix, it's not, for the reason mentioned by CczuAzul: bad unoriginal script. And what the hell is with the insane lengths these rich kingpins go to, just to make a simple transfer (See 2 Fast 2 Furious)? It's amazing these guys made any money at all to fill that big cellar. Speaking of which, the scene with the rats having sex was worth the price of admission alone ("They fuck just like us!!").

Do NOT listen to the critics on this one, this movie is fierce, gory, well acted and fucking hilarious.

yeah i think it looks ace, the camera work looks spot on, and i still think the final chase sequence in the original was a great piece of cinema. im looking forward to it anyway.

I heard Rollins is only like 5 minutes in the movie. And that's the beginning.

I thought the movie was great. I was a big fan of the first flick, I liked the chemistry Matrin Lawrence and Will Smith have throughout the movies. It was highly entertaining and ridiculously funny. I suggest this movie to anyone who likes action, comedy, adventure films. Probably one of the best movies I have seen all year.

i dont know how anybod could not like this movie unless..:

A. they like artsy and ONLY artsy films and are not fans of action in which case they shouldnt have viewed it to begin with...

or B. they had allready convinced theirself ahead of time that they were going to hate the movie and viewed it with a biased point of view..

i mean...... as far as action goes... GOD DAMN!

theres more crazy ass gunfire in this movie than any action movie ive seen as of late

and as far as the plot... i mean.. its fitting.. youd figure a movie about a tactical narcotics team would have the basic premise of the team hunting down a large drug dealer...

as near as i can tell there were 0 inconsistencies and the movie is a hell of a action packed couple hours..

i give it 9/10
