NARF!
Assuming you're using XP, you haven't created a partition and formatted it yet.
:EDIT: ...creating a partition and formatting isn't obviously specific to XP but that's the guide I linked to.
thx Vampire
its a new drive and i hadn't planned on partitioning(didn't realize i needed to nor format it)...but that makes sense..thx for the link... off i go

Yeah, it doesn't necessarily mean you want to break the physical drive into multiple logical drives. You still have to partition it even if you only create one partition. You then have to format the new partition(s).
Postscript:
all is well
as soon as i hit compmgmt.msc
(although The larger drives, are new to me)
it pretty much all came back to me lol
thx again,i would have sat here for hrs suffering from brainfade
you saved my entire night

i may just cancel and use the maxblaster software to facilitate this...6 hrs and im still at 2%

Did you format it? FAT32 or NTFS?
NTFS...and i gave up and restarted making sure to check "quickformat"
worked a treat!

Took like an hour to format my new Seagate, I didn't remember it taking that long when I installed a new one (also 120gb) in my desktop!
and now, my new drive that i had just finished migrating all my movies, game back ups,and adult material to....DIED
click click click...argh!!!!!!!
