finding lost files...URGENT

im here now at a friends and he s looking for 1000s of pics lost 2 weeks ago

freeundelete isnt working right....it didnt pick up a pic i deleted today

any other suggestions?

nothing was dl ed after the pics went awol

Try and system restore back to a previous time before he lost them

otherwise a file recovery utility might do it

If its XP I've used a program called Restoration successfully before. That is if by "lost" you mean deleted.

Its free and if I remember correctly it's a standalone exe so you don't even have to "install" the app.

just tried restoration and i already system restored...the folders are gone

restoration and freeundelete both didnt pick up the recently deleted pic...so im gonna assume the folders are still accessible but cannot be found by both of these programs

the next step is to bring this hd to a shop to see if they can find the folders....$30 just to search...how much would a fair price be to recover?

There are two other recovery programs that were recommended by Computeractive magazine last week:

Portable Data Recovery

and

ADRC Data Recovery

Both are designed for use on a USB drive which means they require no installation etc so as not to write over the missing files.

I've never used them but maybe one might help? I've used Restoration before and not got much joy.

If you're looking at commercial apps then I've used Active Undelete and found it quite good. But it will require installation and if you use it on the drive the lost files were on it might overwrite them.

i agree....im home now so ill give it another crack during the week... i ll bring over my external drive so there wont be any issues also....any other advice is still appreciated

I had to do something similar awhile back and get files back from a formatted drive.

I used a program called "Recover My files". I can't remember where I got it from but checking it now I see I have the full nonevaluation version 3.98. The demo version may limit how much you can recover, not sure, give it a try.

It works for both NTSC and FAT32. If I remember correctly I ended up recovering 90% of what I wanted but with the annoying output of 2000 files titled 'recovered file_1', 'recovered file_2' ... and so on up to 2000.

If its just pictures you are after this shouldn't be too much of an issue.

EasyRecovery Pro released by F.O.S.I. works well, I have an old version but still seems to handle the job
