PAL-to-NTSC DVD players

I'm looking to get another DVD player to play PAL SVCDs with an on-the-fly PAL->NTSC output. Currently im just re-encoding everything to NTSC. My question is about the output. I've read on here and DVDrHelp that playing PAL SVCDs with NTSC output results in strange aspect ratios and chopped pictures. Is this true for all the players?

I'm looking at the Norcent DP300 and a couple Apex models now. Do these output the cropped picture?

Thanks

on my DVD player, AIWA DI-170 or something, the picture does have a fuked resolution. I presume the decoder just doesnt use the extra vertical pixels (94 to be exact) in PAL SVCDs.

A dvd-player that can convert PAL to NTSC on the fly is the APEX AD-800. I dont think it resises the picture, ull have to check out the manual for the dvd player.

Plays both NTSC & PAL doesnt mean it will convert them! It will only play it, its up to you to have a multisystem TV, whixh is not what the man is looking for

i bought the magnavox mdv421 from bestbuy recently ($70) after buying and returning 3 other players... all more expensive ones. The magnavox played everything i had, including PAL SVCD's on my NTSC TV without any bad AR or cropped picture... i paid special attention to the pal svcds because my last player wouldnt play them well.

It has been a good player, everything looks really good though the unit itself is on the cheap feeling side and doesnt have many front panel controls.

Pioneer DV-260 available at walmart plays lots of formats and has PAL to NTSC transcoding. It plays WMA, MP3, JPEG, SVCD, VCD, CD, and DVD all for $88. It also has progressive scan.

I have the KLH KD1220 from Bestbuy ($45), and it converts. No problems with any (s)vcd I have.

After extensive reading throughout the web I bought a Sampo DVE-612(N). This was the only player I read about that played PAL (S)VCDs without either distorting the AR or cropping the frame and had perfect smooth PAL playback on an NTSC television. I can attest that it indeed runs flawlessly, frame is perfect AR/no cropping whatsoever and the playback is smooth as glass.

It's important to note that the 612(N) is different from the previous version DVE-612 (no "N") as it won't get the PAL AR correct.

I took a look at some of the players recommended here and they all seem to have some problems with PAL SVCDs.

magnavox mdv421: This player doesn't list anything about a PAL->NTSC converter. I suspect it's like my Sony which plays a PAL SVCD frame perfectly but has a slight "blur" every second as it doesn't know exactly what to do with the 25fps. Maybe not the same with the Magnavox but it's strange it could play PAL correctly without a converter.

Pioneer DV-260 : Has a review mentioning problems with getting a correct aspect ratio with PAL.

KLH KD1220 : Review shows 2 problems, again AR issues and audio sync problems with SVCD.

Maybe im just really picky Anyways, if anyone else is looking for a player with perfect PAL/NTSC output for (S)VCDs (as well as raw .mpg/.mpeg files, .vob files, mp3s, jpg, DVDR, etc) then I highly recommend the Sampo.

norcent dp300

Since you asked about the Norcent dp300....
It does everything the Sampo does, in fact its upgradeable with Sampo-based firmware (OFFA). Its on sale right now to at Walmart for $56 Cdn (about $39 USD), only thing is you gotta hunt for the right serial number if you want it upgradeable & macrovision/region free.
