Not bad. Picture quality is not that great, a bit blurry, but the sound is excellent.

Best out there so far, but not much better than the SVCD picture wise, so unless you are happy d/l 4gigs for not much gain, probably stick with svcd.

8/9/8

This was a surprise to me actually... I got the sample just as a joke thinking it was going to be a TS on a DVD, but then I checked it out and wow!

Video was pretty good for such a long movie, let alone that it is a TC. And as mentioned above, the sound is real nice too! If you can't wait the 6 months till the DVD comes out, then get this.

Video 6/10 - 1.85:1 anamorphic picture (mentioning this because I expected a letterbox job) and not too bad at all. Lots of grain and image is blurry, but this is just me being picky. You will not find anything better until the DVD-Screener, and even then you won't have the 5.1 sound and you'll probably have the black-white scenes, or an annoying scroller.

Considering I am rating this movie like a real DVD, I think it's pretty damn good. Too bad the movie wasn't

Are you saying you re-extracted the video from the original telecine (not the DVD) to make your copy of the actual movie? Or did you just make your own menu with new sountrack and more chapters and the extras you described.

As for the AR, I think it is pretty bang on in that department. The thin black bars also appeared on the Chakra SVCD version, which I guess could have been made from this release. Dunno... Either way looked good.

Are you talking about ULEAD MovieFactory 3 ??

I tried that once on a 3min video... damn thing took an hour to create a dvd disc on a p4 3ghz... then it looked like crap. Only way to make a DVD is to recode with CCE and make the disc yourself with like DVDMaestro or Scenerist... Those one click programs are good for n00bs but not professionally. I seriously doubt you recoded with ulead and made it look better...

Correct, a 4pass vbr is the scene minimum requirement for qaulity. However the TC VanHelsing disk is not good quality when upscaled to a plasma TV. I beleive that alhtough your SVCD may lok slightly better, it def wont sound better.

I then made custom menus with dvdfactory 3.0v with motion background & slideshow with music straight from the van helsing soundtrack and a music video from the movie...all on 1 dvd. And the video didn't block up or look so pixelated like this one. took about 5 1/2 hours. But mine is much better..lol

Ahh, this is one of those personal choices. Yours probably is blurry to the point that details in pixelation/film grain is not even visible. But the part that confoosed me the most is when you said your video is "untouched" in your original post Personally I like super sharp image where you can clearly see the stubble on people's faces

But I must admit you're dedicated you your Helsing I'll be waiting till the DVD retail comes out (I think sometime this summer).

Not trying to contribute to this apparent 'soon to be flame-war', but an Xbox doesnt exactly provide the clearest image quality as compared to many standalone players.

I am, however, curious how it would look in a high-end standalone... If you could try it in one and post your findings, that would be interesting... For me anyway.

enough said...

6/5/8....even the audio during the movie is low for some reason on this version and the aspect ratio is wrong. I'm done enough said. I not going to debate with you all. If you want a better dvdr do it yourself. Anyone can do a better dvdr and encode than this release.

And as I said, it's personal preference on the blurry issue. Blurry picture looks good to you, so that's your choice. But you cannot have clear and sharp dot crawl free video with TMPEGEnc, especially going from a 480x576 SVCD into a 720x480 DVD. Mathematically, it is unfortunately impossible, even with CCE (which is the best encoder still IMO).

...

PS: The aspect ratio is fine on this release. The black bars on the side actually are maintaining the correct aspect ratio of the original telecine.

:: No requesting samples. Now...please drop these unrelated issues or take it to the proper section. -K::

So much pain pouring
