Video chat software

Talking to friends across the US on the net can be great fun, even better with video chat. Yahoo is slow and freezes up, AIM loses connection every few seconds. Skype is just to damn slow, video is blocky and jerky as fuck.

What is the best software available for such a thing? Something that just works and works good. I don't understand why all these chat programs suck This technology has been around for years.

I've always found skype to be very responsive so that was my only real 'video chat' software specifically I would use, I've had good luck with MSN's video options as well as using webcamxp for standalone video streaming from webcam.

I like Skypes software. The video I don't find to be real responsive. It's slow almost to the point it's still pictures. What kinds of settings do you use? I have read that MSN's video is pretty good, haven't tried it yet.

Wifey and I use MSN when either one of us goes out of town... Mainly because you can video chat with people via MSN on the Xbox 360, makes things alot easier.

i use skype with friends over seas and that. never had an issue besides the rare lockup, but mostly it runs smooth.

i tried to check my setting, but there isn't really a whole lot you can tinker with. running it off a barebones macbook (2GHz/2Gigs of RAM).

i've also used the built in video chat in gchat (gmail's online chat) and ichat and they work just as fine.

skype is just the easiest as everyone seems to have that.

I used all stock settings in terms of video last time I used it to help a family member who just bought a cam for videochat and it definitely had smooth framerate (maybe specific camera/driver issues in your case) I don't use it that often (honestly having the camera on the laptop is really creepy sometimes and i often want to cover it just to be 'safe')

I just tried msn and the video freezes up and I can't find anything on google. I gotta say the problem is on my end because there vid is not freezing up. just mine. but the pic quality is superb. There are no settings to tweak either.

I was messing with some settings in the router and I was on yahoo last night and had no problems. So tonight we plan on trying AIM, and or MSN.
