dvd player question

this time i did use the search button and didn't find anything so...

i've seen a few people mention the philips dvd players before on how they play divx files and are cheap.
There is one in the radioshack flyer for 99$ (CDN) and it says it supports divx video playback, as well as basically every other video format..vcd, svcd, dvd-r/+r etc etc.

but i was wondering if the philips players also support the xvid codec? and if you can somehow update it with the newest video/audio codecs every so often..

If anyone has any information that would be awesome

I have a Philips DVP642 and it plays XViD. In fact, I've only had one DiVX/XViD movie that did not play on it. $70 at Walmart & Target.

Some here have disowned any Philips player, but I haven't had any issues with it yet with any format.

would it be a better idea to go with the philips model or the apex dvd players?

both are cheap and i see some people (namely neversoft) has had problems with the philips
but has anyone encounted any problems with the apex dvd players?

With the Apex I've experienced loud motor noises and failure. I've also had a few that couldn't read a disc right. It was only on with store bought dvds, I would get pauses in between certain spots on the disks and sometimes a complete lockup. If the store has a good return policy it doesn't really matter.

got the philips player!
and it was cheaper then i thought; they had them on for 89$ at walmart instead of 99 at radioshack.

Im really liking it so far and have not come into any problems with it..WOO!

thanks for everyone who gave some input on how well the perform etc..

funny story i was just gonna post bout this same model...well if you likes it and vcdhelp says its good....yah i think ill grabs
