.avi files, vcd?

Sorry in advance, as I've never burnt a movie before. I have a lot of movies on my computer in .avi format, that I would like to burn onto a disc to play on my dvd player. How would I go about doing this? Is it as simple as just opening up Nero and choosing the .avi file under VCD? Or is there something else to do?

first you need to make a mpeg 1 file out of it. thats a vcd file that your dvd player can read. check out TMPEGEnc or TMPGEnc.

after you have your file, check out VCDEasy.

there are tons of places where you can get tutes on them.

btw, you should only be doing this if you own the movie in question.

But also your .avi files are not playable in most DVD Players.

If you want to convert to VCD and play on player visit www.vcdhelp.com.

The easiest thing to do is to get a player that plays those .avi's and burn them to cd or dvd. Philips DVP642 does a great job. And includes subs for your foreign films.

Thanks for the replies. I have found a couple of guides about this topic, should have looked for those before I posted. But man does converting to an mpeg file ever take long!

So I've read some tutorials, and managed to convert the avi file into an mpeg file. However, the mpeg file plays back jerky, which is just horrible for any action scenes and such. Any tips on how to fix that?

Well you can us Nero it will encode avi. but that would take sometime. Burn your movie at a slower speed most dvd player reader are 16x if you burn a cd-r at 40x or more its hard for your dvd player to read it so slow it dwn at 12x or 16x good luck

Just buy a frigging DVD player that will play DIVX/XVID, they are only £40

Vcdgear will convert most files for you. ie from an avi to bin/cue . this will run in most dvd players. some sony dvd players dont like crd.

Im just a little bit curious about why you would want to convert your divx/xvid files(I'm assuming thats whats in those .avi container files you mentioned) to VCD rather than SVCD which will be much nicer to look at.
VCD has a constant bitrate or cbr of 1150kbits/s for video and is only slightly better than vhs quality. If you are converting "scene" rls') then they are ripped from dvds and would look much better, even after conversion, as svcd which uses a variable bitrate or vbr and therefore can give more bitrate to action scenes and less br where it is not needed like scenes without much movement. both formats use 224kb audio but with svcd you can mess with the audio br to raise the video br while still keeping it under the 2778kbit/s which is max combined video and audio br for svcd
If you are converting to mpeg1 because your player only plays vcd then as stated above your best option is to invest in a new player and you may as well get one that plays divx/xvid and other mpeg4 related streams.
if your current player plays svcd then go and download yourself a copy of DVD2Svcd and grab the demo of tmpgenc and give it a shot...its essentially a few click solution and will convert divx/avi to very nice svcd or dvd streams. If you like what you see then you can go ahead and find a *ahem* "permanent" version of tmpgenc or cce 2.50 which works faster than tmgenc

To convert avi to DVD use one of the following programs.
DVD Santa.
Cucosoft AVI to DVD converter, or
WinAVI.

All of these programs will give you the files you require and you will be able to burn them to disc using Nero.

Your film is 'jerky' because you have played a film that has the wrong framerate. This is important when converting.
NTSC (America) have frame rates of 23.970 or 29.970.
PAL (UK + Europe) have frame rates of 25.0.

If you try to convert one to the other then the film will be jerky.
