MB stuff you may be able to find it on dell.com when you punch in the serial.

About the drives, are all your jumpers set correctly?

I'd page ElJefeOscuro, but he's busy making king size dildo to be shipped to NY this afternoon.

Do you currently have any IDE drives in that system?

Instead of a New Thread..

I figured that I would just ask here since it is semi-related.

I recently bought a new desktop. The old PC had 3 hard drives in it. 2 of which are fried but 1 I believe is still good. So my question(s) are: How can I tell if the slave drive is good without plugging it in to my new PC? and/or is it compatible with Vista since it was on XP Home?
The slave drive I am referring to didn't have an OS on it but will there be any issues with Vista?
Any serious help/suggestions will be appreciated. I have a lot of data on that drive that I hadn't backed up yet.
Yes, I use external USB HD's for data and storage now.

If you had been using it with XP, its probably in an NTFS or FAT32 file system (even with no OS, it still needs a partition type) and can be read by Vista.

Without plugging it into your new computer to test it? boot from hiren's boot disk on the old box and scan the drive with HDD Regenerator, should let you know if it has any errors, and if you can't find it there, or in BIOS, then its probably not good.

edit: just read you're using USB hd's now, i'd invest in a 3.5" enclosure, usually 15-30 bucks, slap any IDE drive in and its a USB drive now...

Looter, are you currently running XP Media or are you installing it on the SATA drive?

you say you don't have any IDE drives currently plugged in, so that means you're running on SATA only (excepting optical devices) which means that:

If you are installing onto a SATA and don't currently have it running, then you need to give XP the drivers during install, should be a line that says "Press F6 to install a third party driver," and you will need a floppy for this, as assinine as that sounds, reads from A: only...

OR

you already are running on a SATA drive, which means drivers are installed, and if windows doesnt recognize it, you've either forgotten to go to disk management and give it a drive letter/format it or its bum and doesnt even show up in bios.

let me know if i'm close on either of those points.

I just bought a new HD and to get windows to recognize it I had to go into control panel and admin tools, and it found it there. I also had to format it since it was new.

Zoidy has it about right, guys. If you need additional clarification, I'm here all night.

Looter: King Size Dong has been shipped to your place of work, so as to better be an embarrassment to you.

As for your drives, plug it in, turn on machine, right click on My Computer and click manage.

Click on disk management. if the drive is recognized by the system, it will show up there, and tell you if it is readable or not (file system) you might need to format the drive if it does show up there to get it to read again.

Pickles: Take your USB drive apart and plug the questionable drive into your other caddy and then hook it to your computer. this will tell you if the drive is recognized, what is readable on it, and if you want to invest in another USB caddy for it. The Hirens suggestion from Zoidy is a good one if you don't want the bother of tearing apart the USB case.

anyway..back to me...
i have xp media installed on master drive....

i want to check an old drive that booted the old shitbox..
this old drive was partitioned into 4 parts....c/ is boot only
d-f/ partitions are data....

i disconnected my master drive from the new computer....and booted off the old drive.....it wont boot as a master but it almost makes it through before restarting itself

so c:/ is fucked on the old hdd...but the data might still be safe...
when plugged in as a slave there is no recognition in computer management
hhhmmmmmm?????????

also......
[rant]shitmotherfuckercocksuckinpissantcunt[/endrant]
no ide ports

Posted by ZootedLooter on 03-14-2007 09:02 AM:

ok i been reading up on this shit...and i still know squat next to you techies....but my best guess (and hope) is that since it tries to boot but cant...this means all data is still there(remember.. boot drive is partitioned off from data).....mechanically..the drive is sound....if the partitions were damaged somehow this would prevent it from booting up ...or maybe just C:/Boot is fucked....so as long as the mft is intact in the data partitions i can use a recovery program to recover.....so 2 things i gotta ask

1)since the drive isnt recognised in disk management.. will a recovery app be useless?

2)if it might work...i need a good suggestion for an app thats easy to use(we all know this means dong proof)...and might be readily available for a looter like me

theZootedLoser

oh yeah....this is the hdd from the shitbox that got launched out the window.....my first dong thread too

edit:and since i wanna check all my ide drives too...is it cheaper to get a converter cable or that HDD usb that you guys are talking about?....im not cracking open my external....im jinxed enough

EDIT2::::::I DID IT....HOLY FUCKIN SHIT....I DID IT.....

fuckin dell shut down the sata ports in bios...i had to turn em all on....assholes....is it bad if i leave on the ones im not using?

also the ide conversion question still stands
