VCD or SVCD ? A question on my mind

Hi Folks,

As a starter, i know how it´s been done in the scene. Telesyncs, Cams, Telecines and VHS Screeners are being pred in the VCD Group whereas DVD Screeners and DVD Rips are pred in SVCD.

Now, what´s the reason for this? Isn´t a SVCD labeled Telesync encoded in SVCD and would therefor belong there too or is too less of an quality?

Would be nice if someone would clear me up about the background of that scene rule.

Heh, i seen u moved my post to Newbie, well i don´t mind.

Don´t get me wrong, i don´t wanna know any "secret" information or whatever u call it i already know how it works, what i do not know is the basic thought about that ruleset with VCD and SVCD and for that i was asking nothing else.

If anyone can come up with an serious answer i´d be grateful

Would it be better to stick ridigly to the categories when adding titles to VCDQuality but to mix the formats on the front page? It would also encourage people to rate formats/releases other than the "usual" VCD/SVCD Telesyncs etc.

Maybe, but i still got no proper answer out of it.

Posted by Neversoft on 10-29-2004 01:48 PM:

So... You're asking why some releases are VCD and some SVCD and what influences the format the group decides to go with? Stupidity normally Most releases would be fine on VCD, some would actually be more suitable to VCD but SVCD is fashionable so that's what we normally get. Start complaining when they release CAMs on DVDR - it's bound to happen!

The reason is simply a legacy of the original VCD scene. Cams, telesyncs and screeners always used to be in VCD format, whereas DVD rips were always transferred to SVCD.

Altough these days most telesyncs are in SVCD format, they still go in the VCD section because that's where telesyncs always used to go.

Thank you mother, that cleared it up for me. I´m still pretty new at the scene and are not that familiar with old habits.

but it would make sense to say they were in VCD becasue SVCD hadn't come along yet. Like I'm sure there was a time DVD rips were on VCD (I don't remember when SVCD was introduced.)
