New Dr Who

Nobody has started a thread about the new Doctor Who series being aired in the UK so I thought I'd start one...

... anybody else bothered to watch this yet? Watched the first two episodes and although the special effects are sometimes a bit ropey, the plots are stupid and the dialogue is hackneyed but hey... IT'S DOCTOR WHO!!

Seriously, had they spent a fortune on special effects and just churned-out another Sci-fi program then i would've probably changed channel but I'm pleased to say they avoided that and managed to retain that classic "Who" feeling from the 70s.

So I'm not sure what I'm trying to say here - everything that I've ever criticised about Doctor Who is in there but it just feels "right" for some reason. I was also slightly encouraged by the 2nd episode improving on the first by spending more than £4.99 on special effects, although the plot was still totally stupid.

Well, that's it, I've officially just bored myself into submission. Now, fuck off and watch Dr Who (or download it from UKNova if you're not in Blighty) you dirty, stinking, shitcunts!

Have you noticed that the website featured in episode 1 is here:
http://www.whoisdoctorwho.co.uk/
(publicity stunt by the BBC)

I'm actually still undecided about the new series. I was into Dr Who most during the Peter Davison years, although I have memories of Tom Baker and read many of the Jon Pertwee-era books when I was younger.

I think Eccleston makes a good Doctor and the teaser plot line hinted in Ep 2 could get interesting.

The only thing I would say is that I don't like the 45-minute long stories. Four episodes per story with cliffhangers at the end of each episode would be better IMO.

Posted by baha on 04-06-2005 06:48 PM:

i'm still not sure whether i like it or not. i like ecclestone and i think he's good in the role. but i have a big problem with charlie...errr...bobbie...bambi...whatever piper - i hate all things chris evans and even his discards annoy me. wtf is she in that role? what is it she brings that any council estate chav princess couldn't? (and i've seen a lotta council estate chav that's a far sight sexier and more watchable.) celebrity casting for celebrity's sake is just annoying. it'd be nice to see some worthy up and coming actress having the role.

beyond that, the restaurant at the end of the universe scenario was a bit derivitive, but if it was meant as a homage to douglas adams then i applaud it.

effects are good (earth explosion, spider thingies, face morphing), cast (bar davey piper) have been good, storylines haven't been inspired, but they've been ok...nothing really bad, but nothing that's gripped me either. kinda indifferent so far...if i'm still watching by episode 6 then i'll be a convert.

Billie Piper is ok, I can't really think of any other young sluts I'd rather see in the role of Rose. Sure, there's some that would be as good cos Billie is nothing special but it could've been worse... It could've been one of the numerous mingers off Eastenders

Nice to hear that Dr Who gave the royal wedding, the Grand National and Ant & Dec all a kicking in the weekend ratings!

Ep 3 was the best yet.

Gotta agree with that... The episodes do seem to be getting better, albeit sillier I was even slightly impressed with the SFX - ok, they were still crap but easily the best I've ever seen produced by the Beeb.

i never thought of that! yeah, you're right, coulda been westbrook snorting a line off the tardis control panel </shudders at thought>

that was an excellent episode! that's what i remember dr who being about, a mix of some large xmas ham with a liberal sprinkling of sci-fi. simon callow was great, a bit too good of an actor and too convincing to be able to ham it up too much, but he was close. and a not too shabby storyline either...but they coulda taken it a lot further: dr who of old would have strung it out for 3 or 4 episodes, there was the potential for that. i prefer deep and involved to bitesize, but bitesize means anyone can join the series at any time...i guess that's important now to win over a new audience. i'd hope tho that later in the series they'd develop more complex and intricate plots.

a couple more episodes like that and i may even start to collect the series

Posted by FirePixie on 04-11-2005 06:58 PM:

It's ok...I'll probably end up watching the whole series. Piper's voice is annoying at times and there is something about the whole thing that makes it grate at times, not sure what though...lol

Overall reasonably entertaining

Hmmmm... Well, it's old news that Christopher Eccleston is leaving the series after season one so The Doctor will be "regenerating" again

Apparently (well, according to the Beeb) the new Doctor is gonna be some scary-looking bastard called David Tennant.

PJEER!!

It's official... Four episodes into it and I love it. None of that "serious" Sci-fi like Stargate etc (which I thoroughly enjoy, I'm not comparing the two). It's "good old" Doctor Who silliness and I applaud the BBCs efforts to resurrect it and not fuck about with the format too much. Last night's episode reminded me of why I used to love the show so much, they know the plots are stupid so they "enjoy" it instead.

Those of you who think it looks a bit silly and don't like it due to the strange plots and dubious special effects - it's supposed to be like that, it always was! Relax and think of it as "Diet Sci-fi"

Have to agree with you Neversoft, It's really a great show. It's really is a shame that their getting a new Dr who next season. The current guy is brillliant at playing the roll. As for the effects they may not be special, ahh but their still great. The effect kinda remind me of Red Dwarfs effect(loved that show too). Hope it keep up the funny story line their fantastic. looking forward to next weeks episode. Anyone who hasn't checked this out really should.

Still loved it, I've enjoyed every episode except the first one up to now. Something just didn't hang right with it. I'm loving Billie as Rose, never thought she'd be any good but was happily surprised.

Yeah, last nights wasn't brilliant but the Dalek was still evil enough (electrocuting everyone) and the Doctor went pretty out of his mind.

Was skimming the bbc site last nite and came across:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho...one/index.shtml

If you're a fan of Douglas Adams AND Doctor Who then enjoy! Otherwise skip back a couple of links and try some of the other animated episodes

Otherwise - oooh, now I remember why the old Doctor Who scared me as a kid, I almost shat my trollies!

I give tonights episode, 4 brown stars our of 5!

It did freak me out a bit really, the only thing that let it down was Victor Meldrew, not his acting but just because I kept expecting him to shout "I DON'T BELIEVE IT"
Definitely the best episode so far

Hmmmmm, a slightly soppy conclusion to an otherwise good storyline. I'm not sure about "Captain Jack" and his alien bum-love though. Nor am I sure if the "Bigger on the inside" exchange between Jack and the Doctor was supposed to sound like a couple of benders flirting, but it did!

Bisexual Aliens?? NOT ON MY WATCH!!

I don't mind him so much as a character, as long as they don't devote an entire episode to "brown love" I'll be ok.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind gay people but I don't want them ramming down my throat

They do seem a bit "Gay happy", with the queer american wanting to dance with the doc and the fat bloke in the house where the kids were eating was shagging the local butcher to get more meat for the dinner table.

There have been stories floating around usenet that Russell T Davis (the writer - who happens to be gay) is using Dr Who for Gay Activism.

Posted by Neversoft on 06-06-2005 05:25 PM:

Hmmmm... Another so-so episode this week. Yep, it had some fun bits but overall it was weak. What's worse, I find myself agreeing with 404NotFound - all of the episodes that have been written by Russel T Davis have been by far the weakest. Now, under these circumstances I'd say something crass like "Fuck him, fuck him in his big fat gay ass" but considering he DOES like brown love it doesn't seem appropriate...

... I hope he's gobbled to death by a baying crowd of cock-hungry supermodels!!

Next weeks episode looks pretty fucking horny though, those Daleks didn't look like raging homo pepperpots like the one from a few weeks ago

i missed the daleks bit. i saw a bit of the preview for next week and it seemed to be about a world where gameshow/reality-TV had taken over. seeing as i hate DIY cheapo TV where uninteresting chav fuckwits get airtime in the hope (of some overpaid no-brained, no-ideas copycat exec) that they get their tits out and swear a lot, i'm hoping it's a really good send-up of that whole genre.

i haven't exactly warmed to billie piper, but she doesn't annoy me as much. flyboy mincer does annoy me tho, Dr Who is not for pretty boy prancers...there are plenty of US soaps for that. ecclestone, tho, is class. i thought he'd be good, but he's better than that. it'll be sad to see him go.

Posted by fatfecker on 06-12-2005 02:41 AM:

also was quite chuffed that the chick from 'no angels' was in it. i think she's really horny...i don't know if they've picked a new assistant, but i hope she doesn't get killed off so she can be it

All you wonderful US citizens that are missing this awesome show really should download the bugger. Yes, it's low budget and VERY British, but if you give it time you might just discover it's charm (although I doubt it, unless you're familiar with the "old" Dr Who)

What's more, kids seem to love it (well, my 7y/o neice does).

I think it's already airing in Canada so you pissants had better be tuning in

I agree, until Ecclestone, I hand't cared much for the actors potraying Dr Who since Tom Baker (the best IMHO) called it quits, Chris made Dr Who fun for me once again. This new guy seems like a complete boob, no wonder Billy Piper might not make another compete season. Thank god that the BBC spared us from the nakid ass of captain Jack.

yeah, i didn't warm to him either. and i didn't like how they killed off the chick from 'no angels' (the one that the doctor was getting fruity with) but brought back to life mincer boy (and what was THAT kiss all about? - i see and understand the russel t. davis thing that was talked about earlier this thread!).

the daleks were great, i would have liked huge battles with 100's of em and considering the sfx they produced that really wouldn't have been beyond them.

they haven't decided on the new assistant yet, have they? piper has said she's only sticking around for a few episodes of the next series.

The new series is getting me stiff... "New Earth" was ok, I particularly liked "Tooth and Claw" and even "School Reunion" was pretty spanking. Also, I could be wrong but it would appear that the BBC have found another £4.50 and have thrown that at the already sizeable special effects budget - it now totals £11.47 per episode!

In summary; season 2 thus far, gets "Two thumbs up" (my anus)

That inspired me to start looking up where Doom noises have been used since.

I knew it had been used a lot but didn't realise how often the "Wilhelm Scream" had been used (obviously didn't originate from Doom).

Sound here.

List of movies here.

There's a little piece on Wilhelm in Star Wars Deleted Magic, showing clips of where the scream occurs in the SW films (also includes the arrow-in-leg shot from Charge at Feather River.)

Questions that need to be answered:

How many more times can David Tennant say "I am so sorry", be it to cybermen or recently bereaved dumb astronauts, and still make it sound like he means it.

Will bisexual Captain Jack mince back onto our BBC tea time screens?

Will the BBC ever grow some balls and fire Russel T Davies ?

And most importantly of all, when will Doctor Who be moved to its rightful place as the flagship show for CBeebies?

Bring back Ultimate force!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It surely couldn't have anything to do with Militant gay Russel T Davies could it, surely not. The BBC wouldn't give a free reign and soap box to a rabid homo with a chip on his shoulder, would they?

Absolutely - it was craptastic. Peter Kay was almost a bad rip off of Fat Bastard from Austin Powers ("ooh... I wanna absorb ya... get in my belly"). The rest of the plot/acting was pretty piss poor too. Shame on you BBC.

Russell T Davies should stick to being executive producer, and not write another episode.

All the best episodes - The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace, The Impossible Planet - have been written by others.

what a crap episode, the weakest one so far !!!

I cant wait for the last episode of this series...

Season 2, Episode 13: Doomsday

8 July 2006

The Daleks return for an all-out war with the Cybermen - but who is really behind the conflict..? or Major war between Earth and the Gelth, with Time and Space fracturing. The Cybermen in our universe have awoken and aligned themselves with the Gelth. But will the Doctor and Rose be able to prevent the Earth's destruction, or will we have to wait until the 2006 Christmas special?! And why is Rose's father appearing in the final episode of the season?

Posted by Sin on 06-20-2006 05:54 PM:

fuck its finishing so soon?

goddamn, despite the last shitty episode, this series has really shot by

Posted by Jules_Tavernier on 06-20-2006 06:06 PM:

yep only 3 more episodes

then a christmas specail, then a 3rd series with both billie piper (bless her fucking sexy self) and good old dave returning to play rose and the doctor.

The reason it seems to have gone by so fast is that its an english tv show, when we show a series over here it comes on every week untill the series is over, unlike in america where they LOVE to have mid season breaks, or miss a couple of weeks here and there for some stupid reason or another

They must somehow already be going back to the parallel universe that they said they would never be able to go back to. So micky will probably be in it as well.

Roses father being in it again fucks me off, they have one good episode with him in it, the best part being that he died at the end, awww very sad. Now he keeps popping up all over the place and it takes some of the shine off that one good episode.

But I have warmed to her She's OK, doesn't annoy me anymore.

We have the legions of cyberman, just need the dalek hoardes to invade now. Hopefully they'll put a lot more in than the last dalek battle...we need total decimation and annihilation of apocalyptic proportions...but why is it I'm expecting something more on a fireworks-bought-by-your-dad-for-a-bonfire-party proportions?

Turned down an all-day drinking session with some Aussies (to watch the cricket), skipped going out on the beers to watch LFC muller L'Arse, and didn't phone the ex who texted and asked me to come over for lunch (and thereby skipped a guaranteed shag)...all so I could stay sober and awake to catch the Dr.

And it was worth it The SFX have stepped up a notch...and the new chick is tasty. Me likes. A pretty face, a nice smile, a (modest but) firm pair up top and, importantly in these days of stick insects I'm afraid to snap, child-bearing hips!

Another timelord would be The Master , apparently played by John Simm from Life on Mars. He will be known as Mr Saxon until his true identity is revealed. There have already been things referring to Mr Saxon, the only one I spotted was a poster on a wall. Its gonna be drawn out like the Bad Wolf thing I reckon.

Yesterdays ep was pretty good.

And oh yeah. Mister Saxon is an anagram of Master No Six. There having been 5 previous incarnations.

In his defence, this is pretty common knowledge... I found out from the Beebs own website!

I've been suitably impressed with the FX this season as well. Ok, it doesn't have the obscene budget that Stargate or Galactica has but it does ok imho

I doubt they'll kill the Master off too quickly - they'll include *some* form of get-out so they can keep bringing him back, as with all Who regulars like the Daleks and Cybermen.

I can't say I was that impressed with the recent Daleks episodes though. They were "a bit shite" if you ask me*

*but you're probably not asking me so get cunted!

Pop star Kylie Minogue is to have "a major lead role" in this year's Christmas special of Doctor Who.

The star will join David Tennant for Voyage of the Damned, an hour-long show following on from the current series, which ended in the UK on Saturday.

"This will be the most ambitious and best Christmas episode yet," promised executive producer Russell T Davies, who has also written the script.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Cardiff later this month.

You could be almost right. Apparently Peter Davison is going to make a guest appearance under the premise that with all the time travelling the doctor does, it is feasible that he would one day cross the path of one of his previous incarnations.

For those who don't know. Peter Davison was Doctor Who in the early 80's.

Fuck me last weeks episode was fucking rubbish, and it's a two-parter. Is it me or do they have something fucked-up going on with the budget? One minute they're using (reasonably decent) CGI and the next there's somebody running around in a costume that appears to have been rescused from the wardrobe from the Doctor Who circa 1970. Still, at least there should be less rampant homosexuality now that Russ.T (Rusty?) has moved on...

... I know this is fairly non-PC but people can kiss/touch/fuck whoever they want as far as I'm concerned but I don't want to watch two dudes kissing (tromboning sure, but not kissing).

Posted by ntscuser on 06-02-2008 10:26 PM:

It was Steven Moffat - the new boss of the series - who first introduced the character of Captain Jack Harness and male kissing into the series during the two-part story he wrote The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

This comment surprises me, because I really enjoyed that episode. Yes the skeleton in the space suit is reminiscent of '70s Who - but in a good way, (i.e. hiding behind the sofa nostalgia).

There are however two thing that worry me - the first is that most 2-parters have a shit second part, so the quality of this story will probably get dragged down next week.

Second, it seems that Moffat is already running out of ideas, re-using both the "microscopic organisms" from The Empty Child and the "biological elements integrated with computers" from The Girl In The Fireplace.

Posted by Neversoft on 06-03-2008 11:34 AM:

I don't mind the story as much as the cruddyness of the fx and costumes in the episode. I realise they might not have a Hollywood-sized budget but the "rubber skeleton mask in a plastic space suit" was laughable... It's starting to make that fucking Primevil look good!

If you watched the companion episode of Dr Who Confidential on BBC3 you will have heard writer Steven Moffat explain that he wanted monsters that kids could imitate in the playground. That ruled out any kind of fancy CGI creation. If anything, there has been too much reliance recently on glossy visual effects in other episodes of this series at the expense of good story writing.

Posted by Mother on 06-03-2008 01:26 PM:

True - rubber mask or not, this episode was much better than the one with the CG giant alien wasp.

Posted by Neversoft on 06-03-2008 04:13 PM:

ok, so they want "monsters" that kids can imitate, I'm ok with that... But they could still spend a little time and effort on the costumes couldn't they? My point being, the Cybermen generally look ok, as do many of the others but some of them look cheap and stupid. Have a skull in a space-suit if you must, but at least try and make it look like something that I didn't hastily construct out of papier mache while off my tits on roofies

I enjoyed it but I can't help but still suspect that the shit episodes are there because they budget is being thrown at the finale every series... Either give it a bigger budget or spend it more sensibly (and I don't mean by painting egg boxes and sticking them to actors faces!)

Two other things... Is David Tennant leaving and is it just me or has Billie Piper/Rose gained a lisp? (presumably from cosmetic dental work, the horse-faced slut!)

There is no excuse for the lack of budget, they should forget about making torchwood and shit like the Sarah Jane adventures and spend it all on making Doctor Who the absolute bollocks.

If they are making money off the above mentioned shite then they should spend the profits on Doctor Who.

But they won't, they will just spend it on gay escorts and dildo's because they are gay, so very very gay. And they are gay.

Amen to that and add to the list "Doctor Who Confidential". 42 mins every week telling us what we've already watched during the previous 45 mins!

Posted by Neversoft on 06-30-2008 12:51 PM:

Dear BBC,

The collective of bastards known as "VCDQuality" do hereby request that you cease milking Doctor Who before it's udders atrophy and fall off. Torchwood appears to be rejected Doctor Who scripts with the word "fuck" randomly inserted and some man-on-man action (thankfully without any random insertions). Sarah Jane Adventures is even worse as we're forced to look at a woman who at first glance resembles my scrotum and the scripts are so bad they're eclipsed by daytime TV dramas. Finally, Doctor Who Confidential is the sort of behind-the-scenes stuff that should be limited to one per series or just shoved on the DVD - mainly because it's embarrassing to watch the corners you cut when making Doctor Who as a direct result of these spin-offs.

Please die, you cunts.

Yours sincerely

VCDQ

I don't know about there being a new doctor, he was regenerating but if there was a new doctor on the way the story would have been leaked. It would be some coup to keep something like that a secret.

Billie Piper has developed a speech impediment, I thought she may have had some premature Botox treatment but then I noticed one of my pubes between her teeth.

New Doctor? Who would your choice be?

Robert Carlyle and James Nesbitt have been tipped, but lets be honest, the next doctor is gonna be an ethnic, so it'll probably be either Jimi Mistry or a return to TV for Richard Blackwood or Lenny Henry. If Russel T Davies had his way it would be Graham Norton. My personal choice would be Steve Coogan but they could never afford him, Stephen Merchant would be awesome too, especially if he had Barry off Eastenders as an assistant. Maybe Martin Freeman?
