64bit vs 32bit

I am buying a 64bit cpu chip today from tiger. "MD Athlon™ 64 3500+ Processor 2.20GHz OEM" Is it going to be the best cpu in the world? NOPE. will it do what I need it to do? Yep. It's also a Bday present from my family, Well my brother and my parents are buying me the mobo and the cpu.

My question is should I stick with 32bit Winxp, or grab a copy of the 64bit xp? What are the differences, and would it be worth it?

im running a similar model, the 3600+, 64-bit... i installed the x64 XP Pro, and had a few issues, drivers, antivirus, things didnt just work exactly right. i went back to 32 bit, havent had any issues.

honestly, if you've got the time, i'd try a 64 bit setup, see if you can get all your progs and equipment where you want it, but otherwise, 32 bit is fine.

I've had a 64bit processor for yonks now and I tried out 64bit XP for about 2 days and got fed up with driver problems and switched back to 32bit.

drivers, software and hardware are the differences.

currently, there are no motherboards that have a 64 bit external data bus. this means that the amount of data you can send and receive from processor to MMC is exactly the same as a 32 bit chip.

software is limited for 64 bit support. there are only a few dozen programs capable of utilizing the chip, unless you run in compatibility mode which defeats the purpose. the only real advantage is using more than 3 gigs of RAM in your OS.

drivers are unbelievably hard to come by for the 64 bit OS. microsoft would have you believe the drivers are built into vista or xp's 64 bit ver, but they're not. most of the hardware i've installed required a special driver that was nowhere to be found.

in short (too late, i know), unless you plan on having more than 3 gigs of RAM, you would be happier with a 32bit OS.

The mobo and cpu I ordered can only handle 2 gigs.

It's a socket 939, 2 gigs of ram DDR, and a 8x AGP slot. Which is exactly what I need. I plan on getting a better video card here soon. I have a Nvidia 6200 128mbit. So far it does a fine job, I just want something more. I found a decent enough card for around $130 that I want.

ive been using the xfx nvidia 1750 (512 mbs of ddr3) and it has been heaven. no frame rate issues, no lowering color depth or resolution and most of all, no driver issues (finding them or using them). i highly recommend it. i think its the second-best agp card out there, but ive been known to be wrong in the past, so dont take my word for it.

Well I just got my 3500+ installed a bit ago. I can play 720p without any problems at all. Still can't play 1080p, I wonder why? I should be able to.


So far I don't see where it was worth the upgrade. Not seeing it.

Para spend a little more on something like a 7900, or a little more on a 8600 or even a Ati1950. I have a 7600GT (with 512 megs of ram, pci-e) in my system you watch me build and while it's a decent card, my 6800ultras (agp no less) outscore it by 400-500 points in 3dmark 2006. Spend a little more, you'll be much happier with it.

Fuck ATI!!! In recent months I've had problems with ATI, 3 of my friends have or had problems with there ATI cards. All fairly recent cards. So like I said Fuck ATI.

Well I could spend more, but I probably won't. I'm not into gaming on the pc really. I play a few games, like Jade Empire which runs fine with the card I have now.

Look at the reviews on this card, There fantastic. I'll stick with this card. I don't want to spend over $150. I don't even want to spend that much if I can help it.

I won't even consider an ATI card. Not happening.

Like I said, I'm willing to spend $150 on a card, but NO more. We'll see what's out there when I do my upgrade. I will most likely do the upgrade before the cpu upgrade. Or I may keep this cpu for a while.

By the way, I went x32 instead of x64

Don't overlook the ATI 2400/2600 series, they're designed for h.264 crunching primarily over anything else, and they're cheap as hell. If it doesn't work for you, you've got a relatively inexpensive paperweight! But its worth looking up the benchmarks for reals.
