Woman disfigured in attack by friend's chimp

THE screams of a woman being mauled by a crazed chimp were captured on tape - along with desperate pleas for help from the animal's owner.

As the chimp savages Charla Nash, her friend Sandy Herold begs: "Hurry, please!

He ripped her face off.

"He's eating her. Send cops with guns.

You have to shoot him."

Travis the chimp, who has appeared in TV adverts, went berserk and pounced on Charla as she walked up to Sandy's house.

Charla, 55, suffered horrific injuries during the 15-minute attack.

She was so disfigured that a police officer mistook her for a man, saying: "He's got no face."

Police shot the 14st chimp dead when they arrived on the scene.

Details of Sandy's call to the emergency services were released yesterday.

She screams at the operator: "How fast can you get here? He's eating her."

And when police arrive at her home in Stamford, Connecticut, she yells: "Shoot him!"

Yesterday, widow Sandy, 70, who brought up 14-year-old Travis as part of her family, said he was more like a son than a pet.

She added: "He was all I had."

Sandy told how she stabbed Travis with a butcher's knife to try to stop him savaging her friend.

She said: "To do what I did, it was the worst thing in the world. He was my kid."

Sandy said Travis, who liked to sip wine and surf the internet, was usually docile.

She suggested he may have attacked Charla because he didn't recognise her as she had changed her hairstyle.

Sandy added: "Travis was very protective of me."

Earlier this week, Sandy said that shortly before the attack, she had given the chimp the anti-anxiety drug Xanax because he was agitated.

Yesterday, however, she backtracked on that, claiming she had never given the chimp the drug.

Medical experts said Xanax can lead to aggression in people who are unstable.

Police are looking into the possibility of pressing criminal charges.

Another possible explanation for the attack is that Travis recently had Lyme disease, a tick-borne infection that can cause paranoia and mood swings.

Charla had emergency surgery after being savaged on Monday. Yesterday, her family said they were "very optimistic".

Former Knots Landing star Morgan Fairchild, who appeared with Travis in TV ads, described Travis as "an amiable little guy".

I hate xanex and I'm no stranger to the 'fun' illegal substances. It was the one drug where it just made my friend forget entire nights, sometime days, many, many different events until he stopped taking it (granted, he was tripling up if not moreso on his own perscription).

Being in NY I've had to hear all the stories about this cartoon (and god al sharpton is a giant cunt) and I still don't know what they were thinking by printing this unless they were just gunning for controversy to rile up newspaper sales.

I don't see the big deal with the cartoon. They are clearly just saying that the stimulus bill could have been written by a monkey. SO fucking what? The creator of the pic didn't associate monkeys with niggers, the editor of the paper didn't associate monkeys with niggers, a nigger associated monkeys with niggers.
