LapTop Dead?

Laptop was working fine for a few years, and rarely left the bedside.
then for no reason the other morning it froze, i mean windows had frozen.

a little later the screen was blank and still it was unresponsive.

only way to reboot was to hold the power button and power it down.
tried to power it back up and all i get is
the power led and the HDD led comes on along with the fan.

but thats it.

it wont even post.

ive tried all the button presses i can think of and even tried powering it up
with no hdd installed and no memory.

result,
the same two dam leds and fan blowing.

its a packard bell nothing fancy.

ideas?

Is the screen lighting up?

Try the VGA out as mentioned, remember the key press to flick between screens, maybe Fn+F2?

possible bios corruption, would maybe want to look up how to reset cmos on your laptop and give that a shot. If that doesn't work it's very possible something on the board is dead, very odd it wont even post though.

had all the panels off and cant see a battery,
there is what looks like a small power plug thing under the ram panel.
2 red and 2 black wires on a small white plug thing.
ive had that unplugged for a few hours and tried powering it up with and without it connecting.

same result.

post the model #arf

Posted by Arthur Daily on 03-19-2009 01:14 AM:

ok, so ive decided to get a new one,
and for a moment im ashamed to say i was contemplating a netbook.
yes, sorry guys but them things are just to dam sexy looking.

but

i came to my senses...

heres what im looking at now..
and remember i never use a laptop or pc for gaming.

Processor Type Intel Pentium Processor T4200

Processor speed 2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 1MB Cache

Memory Size 4GB MB

Hard Drive Capacity 320 GB

Optical Drives DVD SuperMulti Drive (blu ray)

Screen Size/Type 17" Widescreen

TV Out HDMI

wifi, esata, sd slot and all that bollox...

Price = £399

My laptop lives next to my bed, i download and watch tv shows and browse the net on it.
Mrs Daley dose a bit of Internet shit as well.

It only leaves the house maybe once a year when i take it on holladay.
Places where downloading my 'stories' isnt always possible but dvds are cheap as chips (hence needing the optical drive)

by my reckoning its a 98% multi media machine i need.

what do you think?

(ive left the brand name out, to let the specs speak for them selves)

you say its for multimedia yet dont mention the video card it has, otherwise specs seem fine, lil on the low side if you're looking to output full 1080p to the hdmi unless you have a decent card you can offload the video to

Posted by Ripper on 03-19-2009 02:26 AM:

Well for starters i would never download anything to my c:/ always use an external drive, you can get 1 tb for around £100 and play perfect off the hard drive and on my media centre around 1,4tb of blue ray,

Then i would just buy an xps 720 or 730 and buy a cheap unit to download to and hot swap the hard drive back and forth and hdmi your lcd to the pc
Only good things about laptops is surfing and it's easier to throw out the window than ripping a hdd out of a machine if it gets on top

i had a laptop that I thought was goosed.
The battery had run right down and would not power up even when plugged into the mains.
I removed the battery plugged it into the mains and it worked.
Then shoved the battery back in whilst it was on
Worked perfect ever since.

This also happened to someone else I knew.

easier to just use encryption, with modern processors and hard drive speeds the performance hit is negligible.
