Non-free pirates?

Hope this isn't just a stupid question but I have been thinking.

I met a bloke who claims to release under the name Firefox, or something like that. He said that he sold a copy of Harry Potter 3 (of his making) to one "group" of people I will say (to avoid any unwanted racism). This was a day after its cinematic release.

He reckons he sold it for £23k. I know he is a big supplier but anything I have ever got off him looked just like the free releases.

Now what I was wondering was if groups such as MaVen, Centropy, and POT risk going to prison and fines just to give us all this free (which I am grateful for even though i need to buy the free releases due to my current 56k dialup), then surely someone out there charges for these and has better "sources" to top quality movies.

I have met some people who claim to have movies such as the Grudge etc on DVD quality, but they ask for £25 for them, I am intrigued to see if they are telling the truth but am not willing to pay such high prices.

Now do such groups exist? i.e. groups which charge for ther rlses and are top quality (even better than those of Centropy and MaVen).

I have heard of servers which the subscription feee is expensive for the top quality movies such as this, but they never seem to surface from any of my many suppliers.

Hope this isn't a waste of time in a question but I have been wondering about this for a long time now.

Thanks in advance for anyone who enlightens me

Where do I start without flaming you cos you're an innocent party in this... Firstly, people who sell copied stuff are evil and deserve to be arrested - your "friend" is an arsehole. Secondly, there are some non-scene releases knocking about from time to time but generally they're very ugly CAM copies. Finally, he's also bullshitting you - most groups make their own TS's or buy silvers and release them, your friends suggestion that these silver suppliers paid him 23 grand (even for Harry Potter) is laughable.

What's more, NONE of these pirates have exclusives. They may put the copy out first (although doubtful) but everything they release is available online, for free. What's more, these "perfect" copies are lies... Who are you going to complain to when the copy turns out to be shit?

I'm not saying these things don't go on from time-to-time, but I'm fairly certain your mate is full of shit and if you're not careful you're going to give all of your money to pikey bastards... DON'T DO IT!! If you can't download for yourself and feel the need to spend money on something - spend it on the original!

Either way, inform Trading Standards and FACT - the wanker deserves it

yeah.that's right

Well thanks for all your replies, it's helped me out.

Thing is, can't wait for these releases to come on Retail:
a. because if they are shit then it's a waste
b. I want tosee them straight away and a copy is cheraper than a cinema ticket nowadays, same reason as above.

I buy the genuine copies when the movie is great and go to the cinema for the same reason (or am curious or on a dtae ).

I didn't beleive him anyway, he fed me a load of bull to sell me a load, they were all sh*t copies even though I asked him specifically if they were those rlses. He isn't a mate, more of someone I know.

I don't mind paying a fiver for a copy, as long as the supplier is truthful.

Broadband in Jan

Cheers again

If you're paying money for pirate dvd's why not save that money and spend it on a better internet connection?

Nearly everywhere in the UK (I'm assuming you're UK based) has broadband enabled now, and you cant pick up 512 for about £15.

It makes for a much more pleasurable internet experience. I don't think I could stand to go back to dial up now.

it wasnt instituted too long ago so im guessing it's not being enforced to strictly. basically the cap is there to prevent people who use 100% of their connection al day

ntls current caps aren't caps, they're guidelines. i hit between 7 and 9gb a day on my 750kbit most days and not even a word. NOW.. in Q1 2005 they're upgrading all the lines, so 750kbit will become 2mbit. with what seems like might be a REAL monthly cap. this is not good news, i'd rather stay at 750kbit and be left the hell alone.

if telewest can offer an uncapped 4mbit uncapped service, there's no excuse you cheap sods.
