"The Office"

this american version premieres today on nbc. just wondering how this one will compare to the BBC one. i have never seen either version, but i hear the BBC one was off the hook!

after the pilot tonite, please comment on how this one compares to the UK one!

Didn't get a chance to see it, but from what I heard, the pilot will be like the original BBC version, but the next episodes will be different.

It looks pretty funny, anyone who saw it want to comment?

I imagine its pretty similar to the pilot that was leaked last year, maybe a few tweaks.

First off, at least the US Boss doesn't attempt to be David Brent. It would sink so hard it would be unbelievable. So they have a more American Asshole boss reacting to the same script that was used for the BBC series. Its not dreadful, but it doesn't really "work" for me. Might go down awesomely amongst you guys tho, I just prefer Gervais.

The other characters are hit and miss.. Jim seems ok, but the guy playing Dwight (i'm using iMDB and guessing who is who) is nowhere near as good as Gareth. Not even close. Pam seems OK, cos I've never liked Dawn that much anyway (Mystic loves her, the tard) and overall its a lot better than remaking Coupling.

But did it really need to be done? Its kinda saying you guys wouldn't understand the original, and it has to be dumbed down a bit and remade in order for the humour to get across.. its kinda insulting really. Would the BBC series with decent promotion have worked just as well, and certainly have been a lot cheaper than making a new one from scratch. Considering most of your shows are shown here natively, even with a few VERY American references left in place, it seems like the TV companies are saying "Well.. WE get the British humours, but our viewers won't. We're BETTER THAN THEM!" to me.

But hey, since when have TV station controllers even known shit about anything?

I agree pho, this doesn't need to be remade.

All it did was disappoint me, but maybe the new episodes will be funnier because i haven't already heard the jokes done better.

You just need to watch it period. It may be the best television program of all time.

"needs?"

the american version can best be summed up by this: uncomfortable silence.

pretty much steve carrell does something that he finds hilarious and makes an ass of himself, then everyone is silent for a few moments, then he retreats to his office.

reminds me of the burger king commercials when they had the "spicy" guy...

i'm sticking to the uk version.

Just to piss you guys off....I liked it.

It's not the same without Gervais, I have to admit, but it's still easily better than 1/2 the crap on TV these days. I think it will go well with Scrubs on Tuesdays.

Steve Carrell MAKES that show. If the american version didn't have him it would be absolute shit. First he did Brick in Anchorman, now this role. The guy is super-awesome.

Just watched the UK version. I honestly think the US version did a better job at getting me to laugh. However, it's kinda easy when you're pretty much doing the same show and studying how to improve upon the exact scenario. So ultimately, the next US shows will show how the US ones really compare.

"Improve" is certainly not the word I'd use. It labours on and ultimately fails to recreate the original, so its mainly a case of discussing by how much it fails by. There's absolutely ZERO that is better than the original, its all the same scripts that have been hacked apart, there's very little originality involved.

I love the BBC version of the Office. I saw the tv comm and didn't want to see the actual show after that, Looks like pure shit compared to the original,

Remember Coupling?

I have to agree with kalvaitas007. Its better then 80% of the crap they show on public tele here in the states. Steve Carrell is funny but Im not sure if 1 person can carry a show for 2 long. Also, most Americans aren't familiar w/ the original "office" (I only am because my boy from Hereford introduced me to it) and so cant really make a comparison. As a matter of fact I wouldnt be surprised if most Americans think "whose line is it anyways" is an american original. But so is the nature of the beast. Anyways, for those that havent seen it but wish to know more, heres a 20 min clip for the show

http://www.myspace.com/theoffice

IMO, Arrested Development is the cream of the crop.

i saw the first ep after i saw the first ep of the BBC version today. I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW THEY BASICALLY COPIED IT so much!!!!!!

it is so lame....even stunts like the stapler in the jello

the BBC version is so much more original and funny, and i cannot believe NBC would advertise a "great show" during primetime when they have basically copied the BBC script!

Posted by horizonstar on 03-31-2005 01:59 AM:

I watched about the first 5 minutes and couldn't take the boredom and uncomfortable silences anymore. If this is anything like the original series, I don't think I'll ever try that one either.

I thought the show wasn't that great, but the healthcare episode was really phenomenal...

So this thread has been dead awhile...

I would like to see what the BBC version fans think of The Office now that it has gone on with its own story lines.

I think it is definately the best show on TV, and I have seen the BBC version as well although being North American I did not find it AS funny, still halarious, I just love the american one more so.

And not that I don't like british humor...I thought Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Extras, etc were HALARIOUS... its just that I saw the american version of the office before hand and grew accostumed to that rather than the BBC one.

Season 4 of The Office premiers this Thursday and I cannot wait!

Posted by David Cameron on 09-26-2007 06:27 PM:

I like both versions.

The British version in my opinion is far superiour though, Tim and Gareth's arguments just can't be beaten.

Dwight is funny in his own way but he hasn't made me laugh til my balls ache the way Gareth used to.
