**PLEASE READ** Organ Donor

Some of you know, some of you don't, but my brother is currently fighting for his life waiting for a liver transplant. Though I appreciate any words of support and encouragement, the purpose of this post is not to ask for support specifically, but to shed some light on the donor shortage in this country...

There are currently 100,000 people in America waiting for organ transplants. Only 1/4 of them will receive one. The most important part of deciding to be a donor is telling your family. Even with a signed donor card, indication of your wishes on your driver's license, or listing with a donor registry, it may be your family/next of kin who gives final consent. Talk to your family about organ donation. Tell everyone you know and do some research yourself

For information on organ and tissue donation, and to obtain donor cards, visit www.organdonor.gov.

For the Uk - Nhs Donors

Sorry to hear that dude, hope he finds a donor.

I give blood quite regularly, its grade A shit apparently (quite literally after a good weekend), I also carry a donor card. My family aren't religious or anything so I don't think they would stop my organs being taken, they would respect my wishes.

It is a shame more people don't donate, if it were up to me it would be compulsory, the organs are no good to a dead man.

Good job for trying to raise awareness.

Sorry to hear about this Petrocs, I'll say a prayer in church Sunday for him.

I too have told my family and wife that I want my organs donated. Made sure to register, got it tagged on the drivers license and made sure everyone knows to do this. I lost a good friend to kidney failure simply because he could not find a donor kidney that would match his blood type (and other factors). He had just turned 21 (not that it matter since alcohol was not even an issue for him) but still too young. Kidney dialysis was not working and would not be an option soon. They did find his half-sister made a decent match (family members are the best choice for this type of organ replacement) but before they could do more tests, he was gone.

Donate your organs people.

I finally got round to adding my details to the organ donor register thanks to this thread

I myself am an organ donor. I also donate blood to the red cross every chance I get as I am -O or O negative. However you wish to word it. My blood type is accepted by anyone because it is the universal blood type. We all do what we can.

Best of luck for your Bro petrocs.

When my ex brother-in-law had his heart attack, I got thrown out of the room because he and I were joking around when the doc asked about organ donations and we started discussing who would want which, the Yamaha or the Hammond.

All joking aside, I truly hope that it goes the best it can with your bro, and rest assured that I have made it known that I am a donor, and not just to family. (One of which may need a transplant of not just a kidney, but bone marrow as well and I'm the only one in the family who can give it to them).

I've got my donor card and all of my family know I have no objections ti being dissected and redistributed once I've done with this shit... I have to confess to not giving blood though. I have a pretty bad needle phobia so until they can suck it through my skin, I'm keeping it

I DO think organ donation should be opt-out as opposed to opt-in though. Such a simple change and it would save countless lives.

Give your brother my best Petrocs and tell him once he's better he can *have* my organ... fnarr fnarr!

I was avoiding this thread for a bit, mostly because of the same phobia that Neversoft has. But he summed up perfectly what I wanted to say. Even about the opt out option thing. All hail!

As some of you know and most of you probably dont know my brother Joe passed away last Sunday morning due to liver failure. He fought so hard for a full month trying to hold on for a liver to come for him to have a transplant but one never came. He leaves behind a wife, a 12 year old daughter, a 14 year old son and a greiving family who will never get over this loss.
Over the coming weeks my family and I will be writing our congressman and making phone calls and doing whatever we can to try and change the laws in this country as in concerns the donation system. We propose a change to an "opt out" system...if you dont want to be an organ donor...fine...but if you dont say so we're taking them.
No family should ever have to go through what my family has simply because the world is too fucking ignorant to ask "What is organ donation and why should I be one?" I can't stress this enough to all of you...talk to your family and everyone you know about organ donation..tell them your wish is to be a donar and please try and convince everyone you know to be one. You never know when this might be your family.

For information on organ and tissue donation, and to obtain donor cards, visit www.organdonor.gov.

PLEASE...I beg you...dont let this happen to your family

i am listed on the back of my license to donate, but you need to let your family know your wishes, because they don,t always check for it,very important!

Sorry for your loss petrocs.

Posted by Arthur Daily on 02-19-2007 07:25 PM:

Point taken....

Organ Donation is a blatant reminder of our own mortality
i think this is why we tend to 'put it off' and more often than not die before getting round to it.
much like arranging your own funeral, however practical it may seem i bet
the majority of us if honest haven't planned feck all
short of possibly a pension scheme.

Me of ALL PEOPLE should be aware of the great need for organ donation
yet 'until now' it hasn't been on my list of things to do.

petrocs i'm sorry for you and your family's loss
and i respect your quest for awareness.
my thoughts go out to them two kids
