Power Supply
I was/am using the power supply that came with my computer case, so I know it's not gonna be the best power supply, but figured it would get me by. I've been using it for at least 2 years so all in all not to bad.
I've had an ATI 2600xt 512mb GDDR3 etc etc. It has never played 1080i/p that well at all, it was always jerky and not worth it.
My DVD burner died last week, and I couldn't boot into windows until I took it out, it was an older IDE drive which I've had for about 4 years. My buddy gave me a Sata lightscribe burner and that worked GREAT.
So today I was watching a 720p movie on my pc, and changed the resolution at first my pc stuttered and then it froze up then I couldn't boot into windows after that, I did get an odd message with GDDR3 in it so it had to be referring to the video card.
So after all that I decided ok, lets try the onboard video which is only VGA which sucks, but it plays 1080p nooooooooo problem. I'm more shocked by that than anything.
My question is could it be possible that my power supply has never been strong enough to run my video card properly?

Check out this link here: http://web.aanet.com.au/SnooP/psucalc.php and see if you're current psu is capable. It is possible that it's not supplying enough power to the card. Usually if you miss a video card power connection you aren't able to boot but again there are exceptions.
BTW what is the wattage on your current psu?
It's possible that the overall strain was too much from all the components, but I've never heard of a PSU only supporting a gfx card so far - they either work (they supply dedicated voltage) or they don't.
An upgrade is never a bad thing though especially after a couple of years.
Almost certainly, always use the biggest power supply you can afford .

unless you care about your electric bill, then use one that provides only enough power your system needs without useless overhead![]()

Windows will never have a 32 bit version that can see more than 3gb ram (with some few exceptions using EMT).
Go with 64 and change your software habits. You'll thank yourself later.
and the sheer horsepower is the go to place right now. Memory is dirt cheap and can always be dumped in later.

I did get a new power supply for my current rig, I bought a Coomax 600w pwr sply
Well the ATI 2600xt can handle the HD movies now....but if I try and play any game the pc shuts down, hehe.
Any ideas of what could be causing that?
I'm using it for the time being knowing I probably shouldn't. I'm mainly using it for the DVI support, VGA is useless, lol.

Thoroughly clean the card, I did that with one of mine that had the same problem. Once clean, the problem was resolved.![]()

Reinstall DX then your gfx drivers?
