Review: Jet Jaguar - Think About It Later (2003)

Any Godzilla fan will understand the origins of this artists name. Jet Jaguar is my favourite Godzilla character besides big G himself and starred in the psychedelic 'zilla flop Godzilla vs Megalon (which just happens to be my fave Godzilla movie so fleh!). Baring this in mind, it was the artist name that compelled me to download this release. The fact that it fell in to the trip-hop genre was a total bonus aswell. So anyway, here comes my take on this album all the way from .au.

Think About It Later does exactly what it says on the tin. It takes you away from the 'pleasures' of modern day living and allows you to escape for it's 50 minute running time. While not really in the same league as fellow trip-hop maestro's such as U.N.K.L.E., DJ Shadow, 9 Lazy 9 or DJ Krush to name a select few; i don't really think it tries to compete in the same fashion anyway. Rather than fast, blurry cut-ups, scratches and samples, we're delivered a funky, jazzy slab of 'hop. At points it almost reaches new heights of 'hop and transforms itself in to some sort of bastard child of disco albeit with a twisted element to it and much more downtempo.

Standout tracks for me are the stunning, deep funk fest that is Hepburn Springs which i cannot help but nod too, it harks back to me memories of early Warp and Nightmares On Wax releases. Other tracks like Juicy are superb, funky hip-hop cuts. Moreso the kind of thing where if you waxed lyrical over the top you'd be forgiven for thinking you were listening to People Under The Stairs or Prefuse73 such is the quality. A couple of tracks on here are a little dull, mainly because they've been dragged out maybe 30seconds to a minute too long.

Overall though, this is an impressive debut and makes a great change to see a 'hop slice coming from down under making proof that the .au downtempo scene is still alive. This is one album i'll have in my player for smoking sessions that's for sure. Check it.
