Digital Telecine?

This is just one of those "Hmm.. what if...?" comments.

As we all know, there are a handful of digital theatres scattered about, using super-high-end DLP projectors to display the films.

Would it not be theoretically possible to "rip" the film direct from the digital source? Split the line feed and capture the video as it's playing, or get some kind of copy of the digital source files?

Granted, I have no idea how those systems work, nor is there a digital theatre within a hundred miles of me. I was thinking that if someone in the scene happened to have access to a digital projection system, perhaps this could be a good source of DVD-quality "telecines" right after the theatrical release.

And while I'm writing.. although I have more than ten posts, everything I write is still moderated.. ? If the number is more than ten, perhaps the splash screen should be changed to reflect that. I don't mind, per se, I'm just curious.

i too have wondered this. I searched and found this. http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cach...+features&hl=en[/url] so from what i read it should not be too difficult if they really know what they are doing. I believe if you search for collateral on the main site you can find a copy of a ts from a digital theater, which looks pretty nice.
