Is there a minimum system requirement to playback HD video? Or at least a recommended system requirement?

I've grabbed a few hd movie rips (x264 format) and the playback is choppy at best, however the audio comes through fine.

Maybe it's a codec issue but I'm assuming that vlc will playback x264 videos without any add-ons.
