SVCD players, recommendations?
So I'm thinking of buying another DVD player for SVCD use only. Is the $74 Apex really a good bet, or should I continue to look fomr something that might cost more, but is better? Basically, is an Apex player a good investment or not? Any and all helpful replies are most welcome.
If your looking for a player mainly for backups and the like, then you wanna get a player with as many features for your money as possible.
Things like
: Pal<>NTSC converter
: Macro off
: XVCD/XSVCD compatable
: MiniDVD compatable
: Multiregion
etc
Im not American, but i've seen and equal amount of people praise the Apex range as i've seen diss them. Out of all the players i've looked up, the one i'd have bought myself if the Daewoo 5000n or the 3000n . Use VCDhelper.com and goto the DVD list and look at the stats. cheap players, lots of compatability, all good.

Yes, but an apex. I was skeptical too, but i found out that it is everything it should be and better. There is nothing that it won't play.
I recently got a good GE player at Wal-mart for $149.00 It plays everything I have and the big plus is it has a 3 disk table !!!! so no more getting up to change disk.......
I would try and get hold of a Bush 2004 (in the UK). These babies play EVERYTHING that you throw at them!
I have a wharfdale DVD-750, class player got it about 3yrs ago from tesco's of all places lol!
Mustek V-560
Plays basically everything, but there are 2 different Versions, of which only one also plays MiniDVD and MPG-Files from plain data CDs. (Can also display CVD-Subtitles on SVCDs)
Good image quality, no problems with pal/ntsc, can play MP3 CDs etc...
Pretty robust manufacture, around 140€ in Europe.
from what De* said above, sounds like a decent player. When ppl say "plays evrything i throw at it" make sure you throw more than a VCD/SVCD !
Test it with high bitrate XSVCD discs, check its multiregion, try forcing pal/ntsc modes, try miniDVD, Raw MPEG try lots of different and unusual things
VCDHelp.com has X(S)VCD and MiniDVD demo discs , download them and take them to the store or whatever to test. Its for the best

Apex 1100, for $73 you really can't go wrong. Got mine just for VCD/SVCD.
I got an APEX-AD1500 at Fry's for 55$!!!! It plays everything titties. For that kind of cash even if it blows smoke right after the warranty dies, how can you possibly go wrong?

GO LAKERS 3PEAT BABY
my phillips dvd704 works perfect for svcds, vcds and dvdr and and etc, only thing is that it loads up slow
poor? get an apex..
rich? get a known brand like sony, panasonic, samsung, even the hitachi is nice (plays everything.)
my only complaint about my apex ad-1500 is that it's dark (i heard it's a japanese standard) but I have my tv with a custom setting i can switch between...the custom background is pretty cool too...
cyberhome 528 , this will play any type of disc i've seen so far, and if any of you are interested, i sell them as well. contact me at [email protected] £90 + P+P, UK only.
get the APEX AD5131 - 3 disc changer $99
If ya wish to jump up 3 times every 25-30 mins to change out lord of the rings svcd,,then go for the cheapie Apex. If ya wish to graduate to King Couch Potato status then get the AD5131..with the 3 disc changer, you can watch most svcd's w/o having to rotate out discs like you would on most single disc players. This model has digital pcm audio out (so if ya have a DTS reciever..you can pump 5:1 audio direct for all the audio effects on DVD's. If your not too shy, and plan on being a contestant on whatever the next rendition of Stars Search appears..you can grab a microphone and use the two karaoke imputs on the 5131 ;-). This model was seen at circuit city stores for $99.
The Apex machines are good for range of mediums supported but they do have a few problems. Some of the cheaper Apex units have problems playing back dual layered DVDs and many of them have problems with unusual audio formats.
They are definately good entry level players tho for those looking to playback VCDs and SVCDs.
Personally I like the new players that Philips has been coming out with. I have a model 724 and it plays any Video CD format out there along with support for Photo CDs and MP3s.
Unlike other players I have owned it has no limit on the number of MP3s it will read on a single CD. I had an RCA unit that did real well with VCDs but it would only recognize the first 30 or so MP3s on a CD. It would ignore any more than that.
The 724 only cost me $149.95 US at a WalMart and they also have a 3CD changer with similar features and specs for $179.95.
Both units have the full range of outputs and progressive scan.
From reading the amount of comments on here and other forums about Apex players, theres no way in hell i'd ever buy one. When 50% of the people who have em are complaining about something, thats not a good sign.
They dont sell em here anyway, so it doesn't bother me, but researchin your player is always important.
And a UK Pioneer 444 will play PAL SVCD
