Review: *exclusive* The Hulk (2003): Eric Banna and Jennifer Connelly

Ok here it it kids:

Director Ang Lee strikes gold with the latest portrayal of a Marvel Comic to hit the big screen in the ME HULK, ME SMASHES genre, and Hulk fans sure will NOT be disappointed as I was just amazed at the way The Big Green Thing comes across the silver screen.

Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down) plays aclaimed scientist Dr. Bruce Banner, as you remember from the TV show, his inner demons and a catastropic experiment turn him into the big green monster, The Hulk.

ILM, Industrial Light and Magic does a super job transforming Bana into the monster, that is him in the green glob and not the CGI Hulk we have been seeing. Incredible stuff.

Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind and Darkman) plays Dr. Betty Ross, Banner's love interest who helps transforms The Hulk.

I think Jennifer Connelly has great chemistry with whomever she works with and Director Lee puts that chemistry to good use.

The cast is great and should be highly seen.

The Plot is developed into two different sections both of whom works, as Sam Elliot who plays the commander of a top secret military base tries to capture the hulk to study, and the second subplot, the main focus of this movie, is The Hulk facing off against the 3 Superdogs *sighs* convicts, thats what I call em. transformed through the same experiment.

The action is fast and furious, no pun to the movie, but I think Ang Lee hits a home run with this film.

The Hulk is yet to be rated, and hits theatres June 20, 2003.

My rating: 9 out of 10.

added note to Pho--This and X2 actually does deserve what I rated it..I haven't reviewed every movie I have seen on here..But there have been stinkers.

One time, my cousin Walter got this cat stuck in his ass. True story. what a penis muncher!! i wanna see these movies!! grr matrix reloaded, hulk, x2, bruce almighty, damn all the 1's i wanna see. this looks good, theyve been showin previews for i think 2-3 years
so it must have some crazy sfx in it.

Does anyone know if the movie is going to be based more on the comic book or on the tv series?? Or did Ang decide to make up his own version on how banner became the hulk????

In the Original comic book version During a gamma bomb testing a teenager named Rick Jones had breached security and entered the restricted test area, Banner threw him into a protective trench. Before Banner could get himself to safety, the gamma-bomb detonated.

And in the tv version Banner gets intrigued by how people seemed to get stronger during stressful situation and hooks himself up to some machine which gives him the ability to turn into hulk.

It sounds like the Angster lean mored toward the comic book angle (thank god)

did i blink and miss the section with the 3 Superconvicts? I saw the movie and did not see any such thing.

Im impressed with what Ang Lee did with the Hulk. Whoever did the Daredevil movie had a hundred times more material to work with and screwed it up.

I must admit after seeing this in the movies I actually liked it. I wasnt too too thrilled after seeing the workprint but I took my neice and nephew to see it today and all 3 of us liked it..however it could've been 20 minutes shorter

I liked it too. Not the greatest movie either but seeing Jennifer Connely was worth the price of admission by itself.

I don't like the split screen, like a comic style, that he's using. i can't follow shit when it happens and he does it Alot. and i thought the acting was horrid. also the ending is so dark, its hard to see what's going on. overall, i don't like how he's using the big screen to do comic strips but as a whole, movie deserves a 7/10

Overview – No Spoilers

Okay… The Hulk is a long told story, spawning many cult followers and angry little men. The story is that of a superhero, but perhaps a little more. Bruce Banner’s father (Nick Nolte, The Thin Red Line) was a government scientist trying to figure out a use technology to heal people. He was specifically told ‘no human testing’. Now, the normal person, at this point, would cease and desist, however, Bruce’s father was determined and persistent. It was his life’s work.

Now, the scientist finds out he’s having a son, Bruce (Eric Bana, Black Hawk Down). He makes secret experiments on his son, altering his DNA. Now, Bruce is a baby as this is going on and hence he has no idea what’s happening, or not much memory for that matter. However, the story picks up as Bruce is now and adult and living with foster parents after there’s an accident at the lab.

Bruce is working at Berkley as a genetic scientist. He is picking up on the same work as his father (who he does not know). He’s accepted his real parents to be dead and his foster parents as his true parents.

One day while doing a, rather, routine experiment there is a problem. Bruce’s partner gets in trouble as they are releasing gamma radiation into the room. Bruce gets in the way of the rays. Gamma is the highest concentration of ray, for anyone not in the know. The gamma rays which Bruce gets in the way of, activate the hidden ‘extras’ in his DNA and thus makes him heal. However, it may have worked too well, for now… there are a few extra surprises.





Review – No Spoilers

Okay, I love the Hulk. I have read many of the comics. He and Daredevil are my two favorite superheroes. I came into this movie with high hopes of this not being a repeat of the, rather, disappointing Daredevil. Well, I was right. It was MUCH better. I realize there were many people who felt as though this movie would be nothin’ more than overdone, flashy, CGIs… you have been bested. This movie is great. The story is told in such a way which conveys it accurately to the comic, along with a very unique directorial view.

Ang Lee (Director, Riding with the Devil) delivers an amazing job. You live the comic book. There is a style used which makes one think they’re in a comic. His directing shows the same scene in different, smaller, scenes at different angles, simultaneously. It also shows people doing different actions at the same time, on screen at once. It is intriguing and I am positive he’ll win, at least, one big award for it. It’s unique and has not been done before, at least not in any movie that I’ve ever seen… and I’ve seen a lot of movies.

While it was not quite on level with Spiderman (2001), The Hulk ran circles around Daredevil. The story is awesome. The acting was superb. The all-and-all feel of the movie was sensational. There was little I can do to complain. The movie does not even show “Hulk” until 42 minutes in. This, hopefully, deters the feeling that the whole movie is nothin’ but CGI.




The Final Word – No spoilers

The Hulk delivers the first film I’ve really liked, since seeing X2: X-Men United in early May. There is only a certain amount of originality that can be found when you’re telling a story of a story which has already been told, however, it comes out feeling fresh and new, something that is a true merit to the community of movies.
