I think that Tom Hanks has done a convincing job with the many varied roles he's undertaken. He would be my front runner for the best actor ever.

Bottoming the list, James Dean. The guy couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag.

Ed Norton..his performance in American History X is freakin unbelievable. In Fight Club, he pretty much carries the movie. and If any of you saw The 25th Hour (which was pretty much a failure at the boxoffice but nevertheless was pretty great) he also gave a great performance.

so..Ed Norton is the first great actor that comes to my mind

Kevin Spacey is up there too

Denzel Washington!

Sean Connery

Robert De Niro

closely followed by Al Pacino.

There was a thing on UK tv at the weekend listing the 100 greatest actors/actresses as voted for by the public. I'll have a look for it and add a link to it later if I find it.

here ya go:

unfair question, too many actors, so few lines.

On a LIST of good actors, Al Pacino and Kevin Spacey would rank high though.

Mel Gibson is without a doubt on that list. As is Ethan Hawk, he's really underappreciated. Ed Norton is another good pick, and wether you like him or not, Brad Pitt can act. Just watch 12 monkeys.

He bought it at our local mall so the whole fiasco wound up on the news, it was embarrassing for my relatives and all, but the next week he did it again, different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room! So I run into him a week later in the mall and he’s buying another cat and I says to ‘em "Jesus Walt, what are you doing? You know your just gonna get this cat stuck up your ass too, why don’t you knock it off?" And he says to me "Brodie, how the hell else am I supposed to get the gerbil out?" My cousin was a weird guy....

A lot of you are right on target. I don't have a favorite, but there are a number of actors who's performance let alone can carry a crappy script and a bunch of other horrible actors/actresses. Here's my list, in no specific ranking order:

Actors:
Kevin Spacey, Denzel Washington, Edward Norton, Robert DeNiro, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Brad Pitt, Robert Duvall, Tom Hanks, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart, Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman and probably more will come up later.

Actresses:
Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellweger, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and probably more will come up later, like always.

Carey Grant ...why? because he's is..thats why

My favorite actor now would be John Cusack

I loved High Fidelity, as I do with all of Hornby's adaptations/books. (only other one was About a Boy, and How to be Good might be in the makes) Cusack has been in a lot of films and is a pretty damn good actor. (Grosse Pointe Blank, Say Anything, Sixteen Candles is classic, though it's not great)

A favorite John Cusack movie of mine is the Movie Say Anything, in a scene where he stands out of Ione Skye's Window and turns on stereo, it out came "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel brought chills up my spine, cause scene ranks on my Top 20 scenes of all time.

Michael J Fox. But you knew i was gonna say that.

But seriously, not only was he in my fave movie of all time (BTTF), but just look at what the man has been through.

A tough career battling with drugs and alcohol, then being diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, which he managed to disguise and continue acting with for YEARS with everyone none the wiser.

That's the mark of real talent, someone that dedicated and professional to their work.

Peace to the man, what a cruel thing to happen to a great actor.

My favorite actor right now is definetely Colin Farell. Just love that guy. I hope S.W.A.T is as good as Phone Booth, and The Recruit.

Some good ones mentioned already, Ed Norton and Colin Farrel are 2 guys in desperate need of Oscar recognition, and I can't wait for SWAT either. I also liked the mention of John Cusack, who I used to think was ok at best, but since High Fidelity, he's really proven himself.
To the list I'd like to add Tom Cruise. As much as he's hated by guys because of his pretty boy image or whatever, he almost always puts in great performances, just watch Vanilla Sky or Magnolia if you don't believe me.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

I STRONGLY disagree that he ranks on a list of all time best actors, but I have to commend him for making wise choices for the most part. His movies have for the most part been very successful, due to his looks. However, I think he seems a little dull in his roles and doesn't always act, but more counts on his looks to please people. I don't like the guy,

I agree, one of the best scenes, they couldn't have picked a better song either.

John Cusack's probably my favorite actor, though I not sure if I could say he is the all time best actor. Definitely in the top 10.

Looking forward to seeing his newest flick, Identity.

BTW, ever notice how many movies that he is in also has his sister, Joan??
