-- The ultimate DVD player. (http://www.vcdhq.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=37309)

The ultimate DVD player.

My DVD player died. I need a new one.

Okay... what I want here is down to the point:

I want to know what the ultimate DVD player is... no the one you HAVE, but the one you WANT.

Price does not need to be a factor... lower price is "better" but not necessary.

Some pre-requisites for it are:

-Must play the following formats: VCD, SVCD, DivX, XviD, Mpeg-4
-Must be progressive scan
-Region free
-Go from NTSC to PAL (or vice versa) with no major problems
-Support a large majority of media
-Playback DVD+/-R(W)'s
-A PCMI for software/firmware upgrades would be sweet too
-It was also have a good remote. I had one a while back with a really shitty remote... ruined the entire thing.

Think of the omni-dvd player.

Does a DVD Player of this calibur even exist? I searched around.. a few sites said Neuston Maestro DVX-1201 is what I am looking for... however, I want real people's opinions.

Thanks alot.

Deth.

Get a Apex AD-2600 Progressive-Scan DVD Player it's cheap and has all and more features then the top brands.

Product Description;

Step up to digital excellence with this hi-tech DVD player from Apex. Fully equipped, it delivers incredible video with progressive scanning and component video outputs. Optical audio output makes it a perfect match for your home theater system, bringing movies to life with Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic surround sound modes. The versatile system is compatible with DVD, MP3, WMA, CD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R and DVD-RW formats for hours of non-stop entertainment. It can even read Kodak picture CDs and JPEG-formatted images for picture-perfect slide shows on your TV. And karaoke mode makes for big-time fun at parties.Other cool conveniences include AFF Active Full Screen playback; video fluorescent display; 2X and 4X zoom modes; programmable playback; parental lock; S-video and composite video outputs; dual analog audio outputs; and compatibility with multiple language tracks and multiple angle tracks. When I won this off ebay I was a bit optimistic about it. Well hell Apex is Walmart brand where I'm from. But since then anything and everything I throw in it plays!

By far the best buy I have ever made and for $50.00 you can't go wrong

I got a Yamada 6100, brilliant machine http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...2221478-1755616 and great value. Will play pretty much anything thats thrown at it and you can download firmware updates that are easy to install. Got a 5.1 decoder built in. It wont play a couple of my xvids but I think its just because these are encoded with the latest codec version, I'm sure these will be supported with the next firmware upgrade though.

Problem is that the remote is shitty..... suppose you cant win em' all.

Great post, guys!
Any Canadians here who have recommendations locally?
My buddy's dvd player is starting to sttttutter when playing dvds. We tried different media and a lens cleaner. No good.
That cheap apex sounds nice but I couldnt find any stocked close by.

Thanks in advance!

JVC XV-N312S / XV-N310B has progressive scan, plays most format inc. MPEG-4, and can do PAL->NTSC conversion.

Don't know if it can be made region free, though.

It's hard to go wrong with a progressive scan apex.

Well the {HA 4072} DK DIVX DVD Player is pretty damn close.

It can only play one type of the +/- DVD RW but I dont remember which one.

It can be made region free. Firmware is upgraded by CD.

I read that it can't handle .ac3 audio but I know that it can when encoded with video. It can also handle the hacked wmav2 audio.

I have only come across one DVD rip that it won't synch the audio/video properly and that was Kiss of the Dragon. My P3 had trouble playing that a few years ago.

It plays DivX 3.11, DivX 4, DivX 5.1.1, Mpeg-4, Xvid, VCD, SVCD, mpeg and .vob.

The remote is a bit long but it light. If you have stubby fingers, you might find it annoying as some of the buttons are quite small.

I bought this divx/xvid player (Which plays some asf too): http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...2600256-4898202

Haven't had any probs yet and for £49.99 I'm not going to argue.

I've got an xbox, chipped it to use Xbox media centre (Homebrew) and it kicks ass.

Xvid/Divx/Mpg/Mpg2/Rm/RMVB (Although high bitrate RMVB can be a bit too much for the xbox never had a divx not work perfectly)

Mp3/ogg/wav for audio

Jpg viewer as well

Built in HD with ethernet support so you can set up shares and play media from your pc HD through the network.

and if like me you won't have bought a single game for it so M$ lose money selling the xbox and never get a penny back from me. (Well I have bought a couple but all 2nd hand so they still haven't had any of my cash)

Edit:: I forgot HDTV support & AC3 pass through as well

ive never used this dvd player before but try the philips DVP642.

it's supposed to play MPEG-4, DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW, DVD, SVCD, VCD, DVD+R DL, Divx/Xvid(it's also said that xvid videos come out with messed up colors) its cheap. it also has progressive scan. and it's said to be firmware upgradeable. it supports PAL. i have also read that it can be easily made region free.

I'm getting on this thread late but have had an excellenct experience with the Lite On LVD-2002. The new model is the LVD-2010 and its the same thing but with networking capacity, you dont even have to burn a disk if you dont want to. It may be hard to find a 2002 but the 2010 should be easy enough to find.

http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/...10/lvd_2010.htm

The following is cut and pasted from another forum:

This one is special!

I have it now and have done some thorough testing.

It plays anything you put in it! Aside from what you would expect (DVD, DVD+-R, SVCD) it plays XVID and DIVX files burned straight to a cd or dvd! You can put a two xvid movie on a dvd-r and it plays it perfect (or fill the DVDR with with three full divx/xvid movies (six xvids)) for say a trilogy.

The Firmware is flashable for future upgrades and mine came with the latest (three revisions on lighton website).

On screen menus show all files on disk and you just pick what you want to watch and while playing you can view the display sceen that shows what formatt the vid is in and what audio too (AC3, MP3 etc..). Mixed file types on one disk are ok too.

You guys get the picture? No more hours of conversion, no nonsense just burn whatever vid files on cd or dvd and play (and it plays perfect).

A test I did yesterday involved a recent 4 svcd movie. I extracted the 4 mpg files from the bins into a folder and burnt them straight to a DVD-R then popped the disk in the player and woohoo it works! One DVD instead of 4 svcd's; very organised.

Works equally well with CDRs and DVDRs of course more space on a DVD.

------------------------------------------------------------------

It plays the normal DVD menu on a regular DVD and shows the root files on a data dvd/cd. It has the option to either show the root menu on a data disk or just start playing the first file and when one file is done it starts playing the next in line a second later. You can go to the root menu at any time or skip to the next file while its playing too.

I have found a flaw in this device, it has a problem with old divx 3 skipping a bit in scenes that have a lot of motion. Checked it out and found this has been an ongoing problem and one of the improvements in the newer firmware was to help fix this but they don't have that licked yet. Divx 4 and 5 and xvid no problems at all.

----------------------------------------------------------------

LVD-2001, LVD-2002 and LVD-2010 make life easy and are all excellent units.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

You've chosen to view the multiregion hack for the Lite On LVD-2002 DVD player. To convert this player into a multiregion DVD player please follow these simple instructions (assume you are using the remote control unless otherwise stated):

Open tray

Enter 2, 9, 6 and 0

From new menu, change region to 0 and/or disable Macrovision

This works, but it then starts flashing and self destructs after ten seconds... lol

I've had one of these for a couple of weeks now. Appears to fulfil all your requirements except for DVD+R compatability. It's played verything i've thrown at it so far and comes with a quality VCR all in one box!

No regrets!

KiSS DP-1504/1508 or the LiteOn 2010... -IF- you're willing to deal with frequent firmware bugs and updates to get all that power you're looking for, then these two systems are AWESOME!

if it's stability that you want, at the cost of having less features, then check out the Umax/Yamada DVX-6100 or the Philips DVP720...

I noticed that you didnt put in any requirements for recording, hard drives, DVD-audio, a changer, or THX, so the best I could do was point you in the right directions... each of those manufacturers is working toward making the very best media players available, so you really cant wrong with any of them.

GL!

ps: regardless of everything I just wrote, as they said above, a modified Xbox is STILL the very best option for playing anything on the planet (IF you're willing to take the time to mod it and figure out how to do everything)... and even though, like you, I cant stand most things M$....

...or hold your breath and try finding one of these:

http://www.taipeipc.com/products/dvdplayer/v880n.htm

or wait for one of these (xmas 2004) to use in combination with ANY PC media format... :

http://www.prismiq.com/press/121503b.asp

or build yourself a home theater PC in a component case to place in your TV rack... <grin>

hello new to this and saw your request for a good dvd player and i had to register to tell you about the kiss dp500 dvd player it has everything you asked for except the ntsc to pal it might be a feature but not 100%, the kiss is firmware upgradeable it has a SECRET region free code and it can connect to the internet via ethernet from your computer and you can recieve every radio station from around the world view weather map's(ohhh how exciting lol) with the same ethernet you don't need to input a disk as a direct feed from your computer can play movies(all format) music and even view pictures.

hope this helps
