Wii: MarioKart

Fucking fuckloads of fucktions, this fucker is fucking fucktacular!

Yes, now I've got my initial excitement out of the way, how many other of you whores are playing this gem of a game?

Graphically it's fairly "decent" certainly not Metroid (still the best Wii graphics so far IMHO) but they're bright, colourful, sharp (the aliasing isn't as bad as many Wii games) and more importantly... As smooth as warm Vaseline, even when playing online.

Nintendo may appear to blunder about pretending that people don't want to play online, the friend code system may be stupid and cumbersome but WOAH, they've got the online play for MK sorted. I tried numerous races and didn't notice any lag or issues and more importantly I was able to "drop in" on online mode and find a race within a few seconds... So yeah Nintendo, at least you appear to have the game working well online, now can you take a closer look at how you implement it in future games cos seperate friend codes are so stupid they make my balls hurt!

What else? Well, musically it's a fucking mario game innit?

Overall, a fantastic game. I've only managed a few hours on the bastard and now I'm working, but I find myself "thinking" about going back to it and kicking ass - I think this could be about to ruin me!

Erm, if any of you want to shove your MK friend code in here, please do... I'll do the same at some point.

Graphics: 7
Audio: 6
Gameplay: 10
Overall: 10

I'm playing a bootleg at the moment but my conscience compels me to buy this at the weekend... Unless I pass a drug dealer on my way to the shop.

waiting for the actual release here in canada, im very much looking forward to this game. loved all the other mario karts for snes and n64.

ah well, glad you could enjoy it ya bastard, il just play SSBB till the end of the month (when it comes out, not when the cheque comes in...pricks)

I would've grabbed and patched SSSB but I think I need to go to YAOSM3 (I'm on 2.x) cos the dual layer support is slightly broken in older firmwares... I reckon I need the lens tweaking for DL too, my Wii is oooooold. Luckily for me, I know a mad professor that does these things \o/

Mario Kart is really stonkingly good you know. I can't get enough of dropping online for a random game and getting molested by a bunch of bastards who have clearly been playing the game too fucking much... At least I'm managing to kick my mates arses!

Can you give a quick comparison between it and the n64 / Cube versions? Because I absolutely adored the n64's but hated the Cube with a passion

Posted by Neversoft on 04-10-2008 06:50 AM:

It's faster than the N64 version and nowhere NEAR as annoying as the stupid Double Dash game (which pretty much annoyed everybody). They've gone the same route as the DS version in many respects... Lots of retro tracks plus a few new ones. Some tracks are insane, I thought I was going to have a seizure playing Rainbow Road - although, that's what I hoped for

Personally, I reckon it's "as good" as the DS or SNES games and maybe better in the long run, ask me in six months It beats the pants off N64 and GC versions imho.

I'm not sure about the inclusion of bikes yet, they work ok I guess but don't bring much in the way of innovation... I do like the stunts though and I thought I wouldn't. Some of the half-pipe sections on a couple of levels are nuts

Not a bad game and the drifting is fun, I need to get a wii wheel to see if that makes any difference.

Battle modes are pretty good and it will make a nice game to play when your mates come over.

I haven't tried the online version yet as it logs into nintendo and being a cynical bastard I didn't want them to see me playing it before the release date.

I'm a 30 year old male. so no, i'm not terribly concerned about anything mario related. I'm sure wifey will buy it though.

because the only games 30 year old males enjoy are FPS with lots of blood. Right?

Pfft!!!

I'm 30 and would rather play this with family than an online fps.

Posted by Neversoft on 04-10-2008 08:25 PM:

Agreed... It could be called "Fluffy Kart-racing in massive faggot land" and it would still be extremely playable. It might look like a cartoon but it has more depth and playability than 90% of games.

Posted by 404notfound on 04-11-2008 01:51 AM:

Been playing this for some of the evening and I would say its "ok", but not the reinvention of the franchise I was hoping for.

First things first, The wheel.....Its bobbins, a total waste of time. Over sensitive, infuriating and sometimes downright impossible to use. I got so pissed off using it I gave up and started using the GC controller instead!

Its plagued with the same problem that EVERY Mario Kart has had since the beginning of time, namely when you're in the lead, expect a shower of shit to rain down on you from every other kart, knocking you down to midfield for 20 seconds or so while you make your way back to first, then repeat. It annoyed me in the previous games, it annoys me here. I would rather it be harder to work your way to the front of the field instead of going through that same routine.

The tracks, thus far, are pretty easy and I completed 50cc, coming first in every race on my first run.

I guess its just more of the same, its a slightly more polished version of Double Dash, although I've yet to go online with it so that might add something to the experience.

I guess I'm just a little disappointed... I was expecting something revolutionary, much like galaxy did, I thought the wheel might have gone some way to achieving this, but alas no, its pretty unuseable. What I got was a flashier version of DD, and a game where I had to use a GC controller to make the most of the game

To be honest Neversoft, I wasn't big on the DS version of Mario Kart. While significantly better than the abomination that is Double Dash, it had a few gripes that annoyed me

Well, first I don't care for online play and don't have friends with a DS, so this is an unfair comparison, since Mario Kart is ALL about the multiplayer.

The only one I guess worth mentioning is that it seemed a lot more skill-based than the n64 (which was my main gripe with DD too). DD felt like a 'racing' game and not a 'have fun beating people up in the process' game. part of what made the n64 so great is how competitive the AI kept it.

Somehow i doubt it. I'm not saying i'm 30 so i have to play M rated games. I'm saying I'm 30, and nintendo have been shoving the same regurgitated crap down my throat since 1992 or so. I dont need tons of blood and foul language to keep me interested in a game, it just has to feel fresh to me. and so far, nothing mario related for the past several years has.

strangely enough i enjoy the hell out of the new ratchet and clank game though. it just felt new to me, and not the same crap i've done a million times before.

I'm sorry, but Mario Galaxy has reinvented the genre. It's the very definition of 'new'

Rachet and Clank on the other hand......

Yes... I even went on past the end but I suck too much to get the 120 stars. For the life of me I can't do Mario meets Mario on the Toy Time galaxy. I also suck at the DareDevil comets as well... I'm fucking rubbish, ok?

I disagree with you wholeheartedly Galaxy was one of the most overrated games of all time. the new R&C on the PS3 IMO was 10 times the game galaxy was.

thats just me though, i'm not easily amused. Galaxy was nowhere near the game that the media and fanboys made it out to be. It was an OK game, but it was no 10/10. maybe 7/10

I still cant figure out why the nintendo nuts are slobbin on its knob. i mean. its a mario game, i understand. but.....

tell me whats so revolutionary about it please, cause i must have missed it during my gametime.

^ Mainly the whole "fucking with gravity" vibe brings a new dimension to the genre. R&C seems good but only because the graphics are stunning, I don't think it innovates much (although I haven't played it for long).

Posted by Mr_Grinch on 04-13-2008 04:01 PM:

R&C was fantastic but it was in no way a platform game really, the platforming took a back seat to the shooting, which really seems to be "your thing".

Which isn't a bad thing really.

Mario Galaxy took the platforming genre and added something new to it, it was superb, it was charming and it played wonderfully.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Mario Kart, I'd place it well above Double Dash and the N64 version and pretty much on par with the good 'ole SNES original in terms of fun.

And the complaint about being royally fucked over if in first? Personally that's something I love about the game, even if you're in 12th, on the last lap, you KNOW there's a chance you can still pull it back.
