It is to me.

I suspect that they were after something else and used the p2p excuse to inspect his computer (if they couldn't get a warrant for whatever it was in reality they were after).

Alternatively they could be coming after the 80k+ users thought to have been based in the UK ...at least it'd give the new wave of plastic policeman (who wander round in 5's and 6's and do fuck-all else bar hassle those having a good time) something to do.

Now what in the world brought this on? Let me quote from the article:

“…Last week Cleveland Police arrested a user of OiNK in the Cheshire area, who was questioned and later released on police bail. It is alleged that the individual - a normal user of the site who has no previous involvement with the police and no criminal convictions - uploaded a solitary album in early 2007.

Furthermore, information suggests that the police will be arresting and interviewing more users in the course of this investigation but at this stage it is unclear exactly who they are targeting and why. A one-off album uploader seems an unlikely target, particularly as legally in the UK, the fact that the album was allegedly pre-released - as opposed to released after retail - means little.

Going on previous cases, uploading (sharing) would be a civilly actionable offense - lawyers Davenport Lyons in the UK are happy to send out bills to those it claims uploaded its client’s games and the police aren’t interested. But for reasons no-one seems to fully understand, the police are involved in this case and have sent a car full of officers to make an arrest at the individual’s place of work, all for sharing a few minutes of music…”

A little odd would you not say? I would think so. A precursor to more such incidents? Or is there something else we are all unaware off. Regardless I found it interesting. If you don’t fine. If no one else does the thread will die. No reason for throwing out insults like you have.

Although I never uploaded anything I was a member (just not very active). I think the only reason the Police have bothered to get involved is because it was reported as a fraud and not piracy and to save face they really *have* to prosecute somebody now. Letting it go would not only send out the wrong message to us, the unwashed masses but presumably all of the kickbacks the music industry have paid to politicians, civil servants etc etc would dry-up

i don't think anything 'the scene' offered could compare to oink. torrents or not, it was probably the biggest library of music ever, anywhere.

Not being an elitist douche I downloaded from wherever the fuck I wanted (legal stuff only of course) and OiNK was one of them, there really WASN'T a better alternative for music, irrespective of how super you thought your hook-ups were. That's pretty much specific to OiNK though, I'm not saying that was the case with other torrent sites... Having said that though, some private torrent sites get releases extremely quickly, I just prefer not to use them cos I have better things to do with my bandwidth and the latency caused by most torrent clients is fucked.

Of 'free to try' music I've used irc, dc++, soulseek, shareaza, ed2k, audiogalaxy, napster, winmx, usenet, and probably 20 other 'tools' and I never found one with as much genuinely - i.e things that would complete and EVERY time was what it claimed to be - available as on oink.

Read on thereg today that they've arrested 6 people in total now. ALL had uploaded pre-release material, so that appears to be what they're after.

Yes it is. Fuck, even itunes and any other pay service can't compare. the back catalogue, the selection, etc.

Posted by Ekno on 06-02-2008 09:16 PM:

What the fuck are you talking about, those things didn't even last more than a year before they had to bring it back.
U can't get anything u want, no form of p2p can ever offer that. Look now it is all gone. haha. GONE GOiNK GOiNK GOiNK.

Those torrents sites, I fucking hate them, they fucking exploit people, i wouldn't wonder that they exploited u too. How many sites don't u see that beg for donations, those sites ask for more donations than any other 3rd world country.

Tell me how much did u donate? Did they give u butterflies every time u donated or pink pigs with wings?

Posted by baha on 06-02-2008 09:44 PM:

LOL - I thought for a second you may have had some insight or been party to some tech that I had no idea about. And then I find out that you don't even have a clue about torrent communities or torrent sites...

Picking one of my favourite cult movie sites, been going about 5yrs, currently 40659 torrents, Bunuel's "Simón del desierto" uploaded Feb 4th '05 still has 4 seeders and the last completed download was May 5th '07. And even if it didn't have a seed it'd take all of a few hours to start the torrent, make a reseed request, come back from work and find some Swedish or Japanese guy on a fat 100Mb upload had filled my request and the movie there waiting for me.

Don't let ignorance cloud your judgment

PS: Oh no! They asked for a donation...and I didn't give them one. Wonder what they'll do?
Oh wait, I remember what they do...
Absolutely nothing

I don't know I don't use torrents, and I really don't like to upload, even though I have a high upload speed. All that seeding back and keep your ratio up is waste of time. U see u have to wait hours. The thing is that most popular releases get seeded, of course you can always get that mainstream thing u want and they are often available, but how is with getting exactly what u want when u want it.
Most torrent sites, wants u to donate to be able to make a request or upload a lot to be able to request, I don't know what the exact rules are, but I read in the chat that a site gives u credit then when u have points u can request, that is haha. In the end u pay money, you pay with time. See I'm not ignorant, you are ignorant by risking your ass using P2P. See this Oink guy, he is going to pay a lot, like a fat pig he will be drained and all I do is laugh. haha

i agree with all the cunts about the massive oink catalogue....not only did they have everything but you could choose btwn 3 or 4 different formats and bitrates

and who the fuck cares if you guys are too cool or elite for torrents...i use em for music and next to blog searches...they rule for obscure shit

What the hell are you on about Ekno?

The scene and it's topsites are not free either, shouldn't you know that Mr. Elite? It takes alot of time and upload if you don't have leech.

And as for P2P not being safe, the scene isn't exactly safe either. Nothing is safe.

Posted by I don't computer on 06-03-2008 01:14 AM:

Torrents are basically the only option for obscure shit, yes.

even so it's not worth the commitment or exposure for most of that obscure shit imo.

I use torrents for sports and that is very seldom. Usenet for all else. With enough retention and some investigating I can get 95% of what I am after and no bs

Posted by LOLobo on 06-03-2008 07:07 AM:

ekno never got invited.

Back on topic...

We'll see how far things really go. Can't just be random album upping

Posted by wanksock on 06-03-2008 10:40 AM:

so many ignorant people who either never got invited to oink or think they're 'above' torrents.

i used to be elitist towards scene only stuff too, hoarding ftp archives of old electronic mp3 releases and keeping my scene stuff completely seperated from p2p rips and releases. then i realised how stupid it was, and how much easier it is to find what you want on somewhere like oink. oinks archive was unbeaten. i dont care what site youre on or how many terabytes their back catalogue of scene releases is, oink had it all - with a choice of bitrates and formats.

i made the decision to switch when i got my new hifi and realised that the old (pre mid 2004) 192kbps scene releases are just not good enough on a decent system. oink supplied all these albums and singles with better bitrates.

with regards this arrest, i agree with whoever posted to say they probably had another reason they wanted to look at his pc and used it as an excuse.

hrm, or maybe not - seems theyve arrested 6 more.

None of those "ignorant people" are at risk of arrest though are they?

Torrent abuse is a crime, an easily detectable one at that. Its kind of like robbing a record shop in broad daylight and using your own car as a getaway vehicle.
