widescreen

noob question i know, but can anyone tell me why almost all divx and xvids are ripped as EXTREME widescreen. seriously, when watching on a tv its like 1/3 of the screen with huge black bars at the top and bottom. retail dvd's arent like this :/

There are 16:9 TV's and they are quite popular.

If it's a Re-Encoded TS or TC then yes it may have cropping on the top or bottom.

If it is a DVDRip then that is what aspect ratio the DVD came out in, unless you download a FS (Full Screen) version.

16x9 = 1.78:1

some movies = 1.85:1 . with overscan this equals no bars.
other movies = 2.35:1 or 2.4:1 , this creates bars.

theaters are wider than tvs, so guess how you keep the correct aspect when you make the dvd?

its not rocket science.

It's possible that you're being really daft and when watching it on your tv, watching it in letterbox format.

So you've got a widescreen release and (say you're using tv out) your computer or dvd player is outputting it as if it's sending the signal to a 4x3 tv. This'll result in a squished image on your widescreen tv and make it look "more widescreen" than normal.

But then surely you'd notice the image is squashed.

But seriously, go buy the retail edition of any of your divx rips and they WILL be the same aspect ratio.

I suggest u get a HDTV that way u can watch it in High Definition. If that did not answer ur question then this might. Most of the "rips" of "media" contant is done in the aspect ratio of 4:3. If u have gone to a theater in ur whole life u well know what I mean.

4:3 ie an aspect ratio that is 3 quarters as high as it is wide ? that isnt the way movies are ripped tho, they are more like 4:1.5 from the ones ive seen, like a letterbox

i watched sin city on a widescreen television at the weekend, and altho the black bars were greatly reduced, there was still about an inch or so at the top and bottom that was unused., what is the point in this ? also, if you buy a widescreen television, how do you stop normal tv from being squashed without cropping the picture ?

Widescreen TV's are only 1.78:1, movies are normally 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 (like pHo said) so naturally some movies still require "padding" at the top and bottom of the screen.

As for watching 4x3 on a widescreen TV - you generally have two options: Vertical bars down the left and right or a "smart" mode which does a stretch/crop (distorts the pic slightly and crops a smidgen off the edges but it's full screen and you quickly get used to it)

There was a discussion about AR the other day, and i posted the link on IMDB that tells you what AR certain films are in. While your TV may be 16:9, a lot of films will be 21.15:9 - too wide for your TV, resulting in black borders at the top and bottom.

as for "normal tv", your tv should adjust automatically, but if it doesn't, change the AR yourself. there's a magic button.

adjusting automatically would cause cropping, correct ? ie, the picture is squashed, so either it can be squeezed in from the left and right and black bars down each side, or stretched vertically and cropped at the top and bottom ??

iam not trying to be awkward by the way, iam just pretty baffled that widescreen is taking off so well when watching normal tv on a widescreen set either makes everybody look like short fat dwarfs or means you lose some picture vertically / have black bars on each side.

4:3 isn't what most films are ripped at. 4:3 is bog standard old television. And seriously, go buy a DVD, they ARE that wide. The point in this is because it shows the film as it was originally intended to be seen (ie how it is at the cinema). Otherwise you'd be cropping it.

no, your tv should know the aspect ratio and make it widescreen, or 4:3 or whatever, automatically.

Nope. Get one TV that does both. I have a 36" JVC 4:3 TV that features a very impressive 16:9 mode

On a regular 4:3 TV, when you watch a widescreen movie in letterbox mode, every third line of resolution is skipped, in order to retain it's 16:9 shape on a 4:3 tv.

On most newer CRT Big screens, there is a 16:9 mode. The TVs will compress the rasters to only scan the 16:9 area of the television, thus increasing the resolution by 1/3.

See, you can have your cake and eat it too.

How much tv do you watch? Surely you've noticed the BIG FUCKING bars across the top and bottom of your 4x3 tv on an awful lot of programs nowadays? A good number of tv programs are broadcast in widescreen. It won't be long before they out number the 4x3 ones. Just stop being cheap and buy a nice new widescreen tv.

granted i dont watch much tv, i have noticed some programs being broadcast in mild widescreen BUT

the widescreen iam talking about from divx movies is so wide i mean like a 3rd of the screen is picture. and the other 2 thirds are black bars at the top and bottom. quite a difference from an inch or so at the top and bottom.
